Yes, he was the bigger, better-conditioned version of George Foreman

LOL. I was just thinking it was probably Bonecrusher.

That was one of Don King's finest screwjobs.

I guess Moore was inthat mix... I tend to think of him as being earlier than when those guys jelled... I also tend not to think much of Bowe and Holy but that admittedly is just me... And either of those guys would be welcome in this division with open arms.... Hell I think Razor Ruddock would do quite well frankly...

Bowe and Holyfield had already fought twice when Moorer got his shot at Evander.

Plus, if I remember correctly...it was a "Winner Take All" tournament. So Bert probably only got expenses for nearly getting arrested and losing in his first fight to an unknown.

Hard to say. brewster had real flashes of talent. His win against Golata was impressive... among a few others. He just lost it so its hard to see.

Yes. It was Holy's first defense after he won the title back from Bowe in their rematch.

I am mixed up about this time...I admit it.

I just have the order backwards in my head and can't keep it straight. I really find it hard to believe that bowe fought holly by then:doh:.

Well...if we use your John Ruiz criteria here...I would say that Bonecrusher was more of a top ten contender than a champion.

See I remember Bowe as being a big fan favorite... everyone was like he can punch and hes from Brooklyn! :hammert:

Funny thing is peopel thought Bowe wouyld kill Lewis... even after lewis did Ruddock who while not great was no slouch.

I swear Lewis would have eaten Bowe's lunch

Can you imagine what a crappy fight that would be?

I can just see the tag line...

"Smith - Ruiz: No Boxing Skills Allowed"

The only saving grace is that Bonecrusher wouldn't be scared of Ruiz so he would actually try to win and might just knock Ruiz's block off. Bonecrusher was a big, no-skills lug, but he could definitely punch. And was a strong guy who wasn't above using his strength to his advantage so I don't know that I see Ruiz getting the upper hand in the clinches.

Thiws is by far the worst crop of Hw i ever saw. I tried to defend them for a while, saying since theyr so big, the might compensate theyr lack of skill with strenght and power, but it's not the case. They suck plain and simple and they're so lazy most pro golfer are in better shape than them. They're the most heartless buch of buffoon I ever saw.
Most of them, when they have the chance to fight for the HW championship ,show absolutely no passion, and don't even pressure the china chin ,no heart , no stamina clown who masquerade as the best HW in the world.

As much as I despise Wlad , at least he has the decency to come in shape for his fight, but nobody would make me believe that this guy would be a top HW in ny other era past the 50's.

Yeah, but those are hometown fans. Everyone has those. You have to be a real piece of work to make your local fans not like you.

So let me amend my thought...I've never met anyone who wasn't from Brooklyn who was a Bowe fan.

Tis division is really pathetic, Jonnhy boy is one of the top HW. Look , i love Ruiz since he's at least an overachiever who's almost always in shape and manage to make the most out of his talent, but he's old, inactive not particuliarly skilled or gifted. He shouldn't be more than a dangerous spoiler in a decent Hw era. Yet, he's always in world title fight, getting robbed most time than not.

So you woud seriously pick Patterson, Johanson, Liston, Leon Spinks and Michael Spinks over Wlad?

    Liston DEFINITLEY

250 year old Ray Mercer marked Wlad up bad with the few jabs he bothered to throw back at him... and thats all he threw

Liston was a superb jabber (better than mercer) and a vastly superior technician...

I see no reason he couldnt hit Klitschko with regularity

the other guys are just too small

BTW, a prime Mercer knocks Wladimir out too, IMO

I consider patterson and johansen part of the 50's. Liston would kill wlad, I'd pick wlad over both spink tough but would give michael a decent chance of upsetting him

How many of those periods did Tommy Morrison have?

The Brewster knockdowns were more attributable to Klitschko's stamina than to Brewster...at least more than Brewster's offense. His best offense was his defense...or lack thereof, Klitschko got tired because he couldn't miss him.

If you want to see lazy, check out Ray Mercer blow an opportunity to fight for the heavyweight title in the Garden, of all places, against Jesse Ferguson.

I can accept than in general, this is a weak era, but I think there needs to be some perspective here, because some in this thread seem to have a very romantic view of an era that saw Frank Bruno, Bruce Seldon, and Frans Botha hold title belts...and if you count the WBO (which has grown in credibility since then)...Herbie Hide, Michael Bentt and Henry Akinwande.

I'd take the Klitschko brothers over most of the 90's era heavyweights. Their competition isn't as great as was around back then, but then just because the division housed a lot of name fighters doesn't mean the fights were made.

Holyfield waited as long as he could to defend the belts against Lewis. Bowe never did. And Tyson didn't fight him when he had the hardware.
