According to all local newspapers, Miguel Cotto got into a fight with trainer/uncle Evangelista Cotto after a difference of opinion concerning Miguel’s training. It was reported that at approximately 3:00 P.M. local time Miguel and his trainer got into a heated discussion with regards to training strategies, which caused Miguel to fire his uncle. Allegedly Evangelista attacked Miguel and Cotto answered back with shots of his own. The fight first started at Bairoa Gym where the Cotto prepares for all his fights but the dispute continued in Miguel’s house in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Police intervened in the incident and charges might be filled against Miguel Cotto. Both Evangelista and Miguel Cotto, as well as Cotto’s father, Miguel Cotto Senior suffered minor injuries. This is not the first time that Miguel Cotto and his trainer have had disputes, although none have been reported to reach such a boiling point.:doh:

Fot those that know spanish this is what the P.R. papers say.
Se caen a golpes Miguel Cotto y su tío Evangelista

If the reports are true, he just defended himself. These two do not get along, and should have parted ways years ago. Hopefully Cotto finds a new trainer and can move on with his career. Family and business 99% of the time dont work out.

It's RARE when U Hear of Trainer & Fighter Getting PHYSICAL w/Each Other During a Disagreement...The Last Time that REED Can Think of is Teddy Atlas & Kirk Johnson...

Evangelista Seems to B the OVERBEARING, Teddy Atlas Type of Trainer that Fighters of TODAY Find it HARD to Get Along w/...The WORST Part is, the Cotto's R FAM...But ALREADY, we Saw Cotto's Brother Damn Near Coming to Blows w/Evangelista DURING a Fight....Evangelista HAS to Look N the Mirror @ Assess HIMSELF...

But No Matter WHO's @ Fault or WHO INSTIGATED the Situation, it's CLEARLY Time for Miguel & Evangelista to Part Ways...

Well the article states at the end that Top Rank might find another trainer for Cotto and they mentioned Emmanuel Steward, which could be a blessing for Cotto. :bears:

Emmanuel Steward is a blessing in disguise? How the fuck do you figure that? The last time Steward seemed to be a good trainer was when Lewis was fighting. Other than him and Hearns I can't think of anybody he effected positively. Not Hamed, not Vivian Harris, and certainly not Cintron. Steward is as overrated a trainer as they come.

No, what Cotto needs to do is interview many trainers and find the right one that way. What he needs is someone old school and who knows the basics.

Yes, he has taught Wlad how to protect his chin and win fights. Unfortunately he's also taught Wlad how to stink it up in the ring and wear guys down by clinching, holding and leaning all over them from one side of the ring to the other. At least Lennox Lewis would open up every once in awhile...............Wlad has regressed to doing the ol' John Ruiz one-two and then lunging in to tackle his opponent before they can get their shots off.

    So we thought,

According to Quiñones Flores of the Police Department in the District of Caguas, Miguel could face charges of aggravated assault for the damage he inflicted on his uncle/trainer. Additionally, Evangelista is also facing possible charges of assault, and destruction of property with respect to Miguel's apartment and automobile. Neither Miguel or Evangelista have expressed any interest in pressing charges, but Flores says the two men broke the law with their violent incidents. Elba Rivera Melendez has been assigned as the prosecutor to investigate the case.

"We are going to cite a case because there was an exchange of punches and a crime was committed. As police officers we have to address the situation because there were calls and a complaint," Flores said.

REED Isn't Privy to the Laws in Puerto Rico but SURELY a Man is ALLOWED to DEFEND Himself AND his Property, even by FORCE....It Seems Pretty CLEAR that Evangelista was the Shit Stirrer Here...NO Charges Should B Pressed Either Way & the Cotto's Should NEVER Work Together Again....

Laws in PR are pretty weird..they crack down on you if you whoop an older person....one of the reports say His Uncle was on the ground Knocked out and bleeding heavy and they had to restrain Cotto from doing more...

The D.A doesn't care who you are they will pick up the case even if both of them drop it.

Good point! I agree but I'm also not to sure about PR laws. Maybe Haymaker can add some light to the subject.

Holy shit, they must really hate each others if it came down to this. And if its the case, then yes I understand why the police want to press charge

This really doesn't make sense. How can you charge one person for assault, and then turn around and charge the assaulted person with assault?

Since it sounds like Miguel and Evangelista are both benefited by minimizing the extent of this, I find it hard to believe that either will be strongly punished. How can even the D.A. prove this if the primary participants won't cooperate? And why in the world would either be stupid enough to do anything but minimize this when they are both at risk? Unless the hate is so strong they are willing to go to jail just to make sure the other does, too.

I know there are freak cases wherein a fighter or soldier has been charged with additional counts or given stiffer sentences even for responding to an attack, simply because they are considered more "dangerous" and thus must exhibit a greater degree of self-control (you know the old addage about the heavyweight champ's fists being declared deadly weapons in 50 states, yadda yadda).

Given how well known and liked Cotto is, and given how Puerto Rico works most of the time (I say most because every now and then they will crucify somebody unexpectedly) I'd be shocked if anything significant was done to Miguel. Not sure about uncle though. Also if Evangelista is truly cut off from the gravy train, Miguel will have far, far more resources to use to defend himself.

Laws are mostly the same as in the US, but either way, it gives way for some sort of civil demand. Cotto might get charged for punching his uncle, since he's a boxer and isn't allowed to use his fists, I don't know if it applies here in PR too, and his uncle will have to respond for the car incident. And if the witnesses state that evangelista started the shit, Cotto is off the hook. They should've done this long time ago to vent off the heat. They should've sparred hard and leave it there. The Cottos let that shit build up for far too long.

Well, former three divisions world champion Wilfredo Vazquez is a trainer now. Maybe he could be approached by Cotto. He has plenty of experience in title fights and apparently is doing a good job with his son.

same one....Manny Steward is one of the most overated trainers around.....Roach won't happen if Arum wants to make Cotto vs. Pacquiao in the near future...Buddy McGirt is GARBAGE.....

If i'm Cotto/Arum i go with the best right now....Nacho or Nazim Richardson, these guys seem to keep their training to the basics...no flashy shit...

Maybe Cotto should pull a page from Pacquiao and run for office in P.R. That way if he wins he could just pardon himself.

I doubt Nazim would do it, if he has any kind of loyalty towards Sugar Shane. He was pretty adamant about having Shane face Cotto.

Still though, money talks and being Cotto's trainer could be a much longer and more lucrative deal for Nazim's future.
