Which Career Bridesmaid finally became a Bride?

Piggybacking off of cdogg's "Bridesmaids" topic...which fighters finally won a legit title (No WBO, IBO, ASCPA, etc....) after multiple (let's say more than two) failed attempts?

The first one that Pops into my head is Jersey Joe Walcott who lost twice to Joe Louis and twice to Ezzard Charles before finally winning the Heavyweight title with a KO of Charles.

 

Eric Lucas lost to Fabrice Tiozzo, Roy Jones, and Glenn Catley in three title tries. He then beat Catley in a rematch to win his first world title.

 

Glen Johnson lost to Hopkins, Ottke and drew with Woods before turning the tables

 

Joe Lipsey fought Bernard Hopkins and...wait, whoops! ::

Bruno is a good one. I think the person has to have never been a champ by one of the big three orgs (WBA, WBC, and IBF). They need at least three tries before becoming a champ.

Exactly. It sounds like someone's favorite fighter(s) are or were WBO champions. You know how pissy groupies can get about their favorites.

And even though the WBO has achieved a degree of acceptance now...that doesn't make the bogus champs from 15 -20 years ago suddenly legitimate.

 

I think it took a number of tries before Carlos "Famoso" Hernandez won a world title.

Prince Naseem Hamed is the First "Legit" WBO Champ that REED Can Recall & he Defended it 10 Times or MORE...Prior to then, the WBO was Considered More of a EURO Title than a CREDIBLE World Title...

Yeah, I mean, if anything, it's been more about the other belts dropping to the WBO's level more than anything else to the point where about the only thing a belt means is 12 rounds instead of 10.

The main turning point for the WBO was Oscar beating Ruelas and then dropping the IBF belt and keeping the WBO belt in 1995.
Then in 1997 with Dariusz having the best claim to the Light heavy belt.
Also, Hamed's run beginning in 1996 with a win over Medina (who later won a belt) and especially in 1997 by beating long-time champ Johnson and finally winning all of the other belts.

The WBO heavy title took longer to be recognized. There is Foreman losing a title fight to Morrison and then later beating Moorer that helps. There is Bowe being considered the best heavy when he had the WBO belt, but it still took the Vitali/Byrd/Wlad transition to lock the WBO heavy belt as valuable as the others around 2000.

The WBO's champs have generally been as good as the other 3 since the mid to late 90's and have made as much money. The WBO tends to make the same amount of stupid decisions as the other three since the mid-90's, as well.

Only simpleton Americans who cling to American superiority have held out against them. The same people who think Olympic boxing sucks because Americans stopped dominating it coincidentally enough.

By the time the other organizations quit ranking the WBO champs a good argument could be made that the WBO was legit. When the other organizations permitted unifications, the argument was basically over.

 

Hey, even the Ring Magazine recognized the WBO as equal to the other three like 12 years ago. The 'bible of boxing' gave it a boost too.
