Just how good is he? Pretty damn good I think. He'll likely be the man at super middle when the smoke clears. Discuss. :mj:
REED Thinks MORE of Dirrell than he Does Andre Ward, but Still, Dude Needs to Leave the "Rent-a-Roy" Act ALONE, B HIS OWN Man & Start Fighting Top 10-15 Guys... REED:mj:
Roy seems to have inspired and ruined some of the young talent. They try to emulate him and it doesn't help.
It's been six years and none of the 2004 olympians have gotten past the mark of fighting past-it journeymen. Say what you want against him, but Oscar De La Hoya won his first title about fourteen months after turning professional. Say what you want against him, but Floyd Mayweather Jr. won his first title two years after turning professional. Ok, Floyd and Oscar were at a much lower weight and there are many differences the higher up you go.... Say what you want against him, but Roy Jones Jr. won his first title four years after turning professional. Andre Dirrell and Andre Ward are not even brought up in discussions about title contention yet. Call me when they actually matter to boxing.
He does remind me of a young Roy, but possibly more skilled (not talented or athletic). He has better fundamentals (Roy didn't know what a jab was) & can fight just as well as a lefty or orthadox. I've been really impressed from what I've seen. Maybe the Rent a Roy act is why I like him :dunno:
I'm about the biggest Roy fan there is but it's not like he was the most fundamentally sound fighter on the planet, even in his prime. Roy's UNorthadoxy, no guard up, blinding speed, quadruple left hooks & power shots out of nowhere were what made him so exciting and fun to watch not a superb jab or footwork.
Roy proved he had a decent jab when he used it... he just felt he had to use it... which he didnt. And Roy's footwork WAS superb. Its not as if he was just an athletic freak with no balance like Hamed, or Judah. He was always in perfect position to do damage, and not get hit in return.
