Hey guys at the danger of starting a dick size bragging contest (Im sure that won't happen here).....I remember you guys saying you'd recorded some pretty big numbers back in the day strength wise. Just curious what you managed (raw, no suits or any crap like that) and at what weight you did it at? Did you's powerlift competitively?

    As I said, just curious.

I never powerlifted, I was never strong like that

I did workout with and knew a bunch of powerlifters.. those guys were STRONG

I will admit my numbers in lifts are nothing spectacular

    I'd squat 585 for 6-7 reps

the best bench I ever had was prolly 415 for 2 reps or so

    -I benched 280 for 2 and 300 for 1.
-Last time I went heavy on squats, I did 445 for 6 (and not the half or quarter squats I see people do).
    -Deadlifted 405 for 8 reps.
-Pressed 245 for 8 reps over my head standing.
    -Curled 185.

I weighed 195-205 for all of these.

H Christ. How much did you weigh for those LOK? and were they raw? How did you work up to those- what type of training did you do?

You sell yourself way short btw those kind of numbers raw and without serious powerlifting training and I bet you could have competed in powerlifting at a pretty high level if you'd wanted to. You can't have been too far off a 700lb single with those numbers. Mad strong.

:bears: Impressive stuff, Buddy. The overhead press especially is mad strong (a much cooler & more functional lift than the BP, IMHO). Is that push press or 'military' style? Either way you can't have been far off a 300lb overhead press! How did you train your way up to that?

I got a long way to go to get as strong as you guys. Something to work towards.

My mistake. The overhead press was a bit of a push press (bending knees about 3-4 inches). I also got 275 for 1 when I weighed 165. I was 20 at the time and I kinda stopped doing them for awhile after that because I started getting shoulder tendon problems.

I did the 245 for 8 last year at the end of 7 sets, so I think I could get much more this season . The hardest part is stabilizing it at the top. Getting it up there wasn't the problem. KEEPING it up there was a bit harder because a tiny miscalculation can really fuck up one of your wrists.

I used volume training to get up there. My raw power is not as dependable as my muscular endurance (and as I found out the past three days of moving shit, it's not inexhaustible).

I typically pyramided up. Starting off with light sets like 95lbs for 15 reps, 115 for 15 reps, 135 for 12 reps, 155 for 10 reps, pyramiding up as I felt confident (I eventually for 225 for 12)...then when I got up to doing max sets, I would go back down to what I had been doing months before, but my initial sets would be for more sets or heavier...and that way I could stay on a 6-month long training cycle with only a week here or there for rest.

LOK may have some different methods and they might have been effective for him, but what I did worked for me in terms of setting training goals and sustaining progress.

Cool, cheers Buddy. I actually recently switched military for push presses too, since there's always the temptation with strict presses to get the knees involved a little so I figured - why not just go with it. Then I know progress is progress and Im not just cheating more than I was before. Plus if in doubt it always seems a good default plan to just do the lift that gets the most muscles involved. 245 for 8 is damn heavy though.:crying: I'm 80lb odd south of that for 5s, ATM. My target was 200 for 5 by the end of the year. I'll report back in 2011 when I've caught up

    thanks Hut

I was in the 175 all the way up to 190lbs back then

these numbers are raw but you know what? I was not THAT strong like my friends who powerlifted
I had a guy at GOLDS gym who weighed 145 or so and was benching 460!
    skinny ass legs though.. lol

for Squats.. we did some crazy training
    my fav was the 10x10
10 sets of 10 reps of the HEAVIEST weight you could do

man.. that workout made me throw up multiple times.. lol

you know what? .I think I'm functionally stronger right now though.. some numbers might not be as good but I'm more well rounded and strong in the real world

Most I benched was 605 for 3 reps, squatted 950lbs for 6 reps and deadlifted a max of 825lbs for 2 reps. And yes....this is the Internet so ANYTHING GOES!!!! :kidcool:

I've got metal in my legs instead of bone. Surgically enhanced after the crash.

LOK, far be it for me to throw e-accusations around but you sure you didn't 'internet up' those numbers a wee tad there? According to rawpowerlifting.com the number 1 ranked 181lb lifter in it's federation got a total of 1295 last year. Best squat was 475 and best bench was 451! The all time raw squat record for 181lb was 710 set in 1972 (650 without knee wraps) which you can't have been far off surpassing without any dedicated power lifting training. 'Unspectacular numbers'? :dunno: And you say you were training with guys who were much stronger!?

I trained in a gym that had record holder power lifters man.. seriously.. I was strong in most lifts but not specilized in any and there were guys that woudl focus on bench, they would not work legs at all so they were light but they'd have awesome bench numbers

I didn't "internet up" my numbers man..

I suspect Hanzy though.. Squating "950 for 6" is hard to swallow.. but then again Hanzy claims to weigh almost 400 and be only 5'2

I doubt anybody in the history of planet earth ever squatted 950 for 6 (certainly not without some pretty high tech suits) so I think it's safe to say he was joking.

But in fairness 585 for 7 raw at in or around the 181 weight class is not far off as a claim. That'd take you close to a raw record that's stood unchallenged for nearly 40 years! Without being specialized? :dunno: It's kinda the equivalent of me saying I'd run a sub 10 second 100m in Uni athletics club without ever having trained specifically for it or competed - it's a pretty big claim.

Sure they weren't either high or suited? Or that you might have got mixed up on the numbers after a few years?

Well, I finally have my home gym set up the way I want it for the most part. I can finally start training with weights again. I haven't lifted heavy in months other than moving into my new house. In a few months I'll start going heavy again, but for the last few months it was bodyweight stuff only except for chinups. I can get one overgrip chin with a 50lb plate on my waist.:bears:

It's a basement dungeon with lots of iron. I'll take a few pics later. It's in the same room as my furnace, and it has a door leading out back to my chinning bar (an old swingset that has no swings on it).

In fact, when I deadlift 400 again, I'll get a pic of me taken doing it in my basement. Are you on Facebook, Hutster?

I'm not no, though I'm so sick of people trying to convince me that I should be I'll probably sign up soon.

Sounds good Buddy, post some pics when you've got it all set up! Being a poor student who just rents a room, my power rack is actually in my bedroom! To be fair it's a decent sized room & it doesn't take up THAT much space so the set up isn't quite as ridiculous as that sounds...at least not to me. Beats putting up with the fruitcakes in the gym in my book.

One day I'd love to have a dedicated space for it like you. I even fantasize about what I'll have sometimes.... A power rack with chin up, dip bars & some pulleys, some gymnastic rings, a heavy weighted vest with ruck sack and two chairs for weighted push ups, 2 barbells, some dumbells and some kettlebells, a roman chair/glute ham machine, a bench, some bands and chains, an ab wheel, a punch bag, a double end bag, a jump rope, a fan, an interval timer, a mirror for shadow boxing, a stereo & a water dispenser. :crafty: What a place it'll be!
