There are some good fights for Dawson against young fighters like Cloud, Shumenov, Cleverly, WBA beltholder Garay, or soon to be WBC champion Jean Pascal. Unfortunately HBO won´t push Dawson in that direction, because they don´t approve fights between two young fighters in their physical prime.:doh:
Tarver is a hard fight and a bad matchup for Dawson. Now that he got passed it I expect him to look better in his coming fights. Chad is what he is... A controled, smart boxer, with speed a southpaw stance and some pop. He's a good champ and is going to be really hard to beat.
I'll admit I overreacted. Chad is a very good fighter, but I admit he isnt top 5 P4P. He should really rematch Johnson though. Either that, or I'd like to see him fight Cloud... who it seems hasnt fought since Clinton was in office. BTW - Not really related to anything, but in his prime, EMM(Chad's trainer) would have knocked Chad the fuck out.
Why is everyone saying Tarver looked old? I thought he looked really good. He was fighting a young, fast, in his prime, P4P (allegedly) fighter. He landed lots of jabs, good body shots, dropped his left in there some...I thought he looked good. I would pick him against the majority of the top LHW's out there.
Because he´s not the same fighter he was five years ago? The accuracy, the power, the handspeed, the peak physical shape. It´s not there anymore and it makes all the difference in the world. Five years ago Tarver had the speed, power and timing to hurt and finish him. Today he has the experience, toughness and the grit to take a round here and there and last the distance. Dawson will be a handful for every light-heavyweight, but I have a feeling if he ever fights Cloud, he´ll get broken down over the 2nd half of the fight. It doesn´t look like he has the power to make others respect him, therefore Dawson will be on the move a lot and Cloud will eventually catch up with him, especially with Dawson´s less than stellar chin.
I don´t follow your logic anymore. Roy been washed-up for years now. I wasn´t impressed when he carried Tito and I wasn´t impressed when Calzaghe carried him. Means nothing to me.
Much as I hate Tarver... even I'll admit... he's a shell of the fighter that KO'd Harding, and fought Roy the first two times. His punches have lost all thier snap, and his handspeed and timing are completely gone. I like Chad alot, but I have my doubts if he coulda handled the left hands that Tarver destroyed Harding with. Antonio should retire.
I was ringside when Tarver KO'd Harding in the rematch and I was ringside tonight. Tarver is exactly the same slow, plodding cat he's always been. The difference is that Dawson could take it. Plus, everytime Tarver landed a good shot Dawson would jump back on him and render Tarver defenseless. Tarver's a bitch. Couldn't tell if HBO elected to not interview Tarver or he simply walked out of the ring early. Seemed odd. Did HBO say why there was no interview with Tarver?
I agree with the first half. The difference isn't Chad could take it the difference is Chad didnt run into a counter left like Harding did. Chad is faster and feinted Tarver out of position to avoid his traps.
Tarver put Harding on queer street with a single arm punch leaning against the ropes. You telling me Tarver still generates the same power with his punches? Harding has a much better chin than Dawson as well. Tarver landed a similar shot tonight and while it hurt Dawson a bit, Tarver was out of gas 30 seconds later and Dawson came back strong.
Bro Harding was a good fighter but he had huge holes in his game yet he still whooped Tarvers ass for practicaly every minute of 16 rounds until Tarver dropped the counter left...and Roy was a bum when he fought Tarver Chad would have stopped that version of Roy too....I just think Tarver looked the same he's always looked the difference is he was fighting a fast, prime, young stud in there.
are you kidding me? arm punch? Tarver bounced off the ropes and threw a great, straight counter punch that Harding never saw and ran into. Chad got hit tonight but he saw all the punches coming. You really have to stop with this man..TARVER LOOKED GOOD TONIGHT
this is the same old Tarver IMO..he looked the same against Harding I, Johnson I, RJ III, BHop...Your acting like Tarver ever fought any different. Chad is the reason Tarver appeard different. Put him in there with a fighter who's more straight up and down like the guy he just beat from Britain and he'll look good again. We were watching different fights I think.
Blah Blah Blah. I´m sure Tarver still throws with the same power, accuracy and speed like he did until 2005, when he basically hurt EVERY fighter he ever faced, among them very good defensive fighters like Harding, Jones, Griffin and Reggie Johnson. Over the last few years he couldn´t even drop or get rid of defensive wizard Elvir Muriqi. Clearly no signs of slippage there.
I think its combination of both Muzse. Dawson could take it, but at the same time... theres no way Tarver is exactly the same now. He caught Harding with a BOMB... and Harding was no weak chinned cat either. I dont see no snap in Tarver's punches anymore. Dawson would present problems for ANY Tarver though... but the Tarver of 4-5 years ago woulda been much more dangerous for Chad, and possibly woulda KO'd him. Just my opinion.
Who´s faster Roy or Dawson? Tarver could negate Roy´s hand- and footspeed, but he can´t land anything of significance over 24 rounds like Adamek, Johnson and Harding, who all dropped Dawson? For some reason I don´t buy that. He´s missing his timing and punch. Ah well it´s over, let´s see Dawson against a young cat like Cloud.
BTW - HBO mentioned Froch as a future Dawson opponent. I wouldnt mind seeing that fight. I think Chad would outbox Froch convincingly, but Froch can punch.. and with the way Chad fades late... I might give Froch an outside chance.
So what are you saying he didnt look good tonight? So why didn't Chad beat him as easy as last time?....Because he DID BETTER. Were you watching the fight? My only point is/was that Tarver looked good tonight and didnt fight like an old 40 year old and you guys were exagerating the demise of his "speed" "power" and "accuracy"
are you comparing the RJ that fought Tarver to the Dawson of today? If so Chad has the better faster reflexes and timing by miles....as to the second part of your post styles make fights...matchups matter. Like you said though lets see Dawson fight someone young and hungry next.
He had no chance of winning the fight in 2009. He had a decent chance in 2004. I´d say that is a difference. Tarver looked good for being 40 years old.
It was a counter and it took him 16 rounds to do it...you dont see snap in his punches because Dawson has great defence, everytime he was dropped that i've seen he's never been hurt it was him losing focus.
