Cases where fighters were hyped beyond reason to be the next "Hearns", the next "Trinidad", whoever...and who promptly crashed and burned before reaching the first hurdle..

More recently, Joel Julio, The next "Trinidad", much hyped by a fat hack, duly gets schooled by Carlos Quintana and most recently been seen acting as stepping stone for James Kirkland

Dominick Guinn, promising powerful US heavyweight steals the night of the young heavyweights HBO show against duncan dokiwari in an action fight, forum bandwagons are estbalished, he then (very) slowly limps towards near journeyman status

Almazbek "kid..er..diamond" Raiymkulov, he looked tough, came from one of the -stans, nice right hand, draws with casamayor in a fight he could have got the decision, surely the next elite lightweight?...drubbed by nate campbell, gets a robbery against Huerta, and last seen quitting on stool against Antonio de Marco, only a career as a stepping stone left for him to pursue

    any more? less recent?

Lacy was supposed to be the middleweight Tyson.

Bojado was supposed to be the next DLH, and looked VERY promising his first 10 fights.... then was exposed as a lazy chulo!

Sam Peter is about a loss away from journeyman status.

    Soon to join the list.

    Chris Arreola.

    Bojado was unbelievable.

I think he is the best example of recent years. Really hyped, seen as the best prospect around, better than Cotto, and turns out to be a lazy, overhyped, ball of excrement with short arms.

I don't remember Kid Diamond being praised as something more than a solid contender. Nobody was saying that he was the next big anything, except his mother.

Unless his cardio, and/or chin is shit.......I don't see how Gamboa could possibly be a bust.

On a smaller scale, 2 recent Manny Steward prospects...

Andy Lee..too soon?I don't think so...2004 Olympian, beat Alfredo Angulo in the opening round before being dumped out...turns pro under manny steward, talk of him giving Jermain Taylor all he could handle in sparring, blasts out Carl Daniels in a highlight reel KO, future champ in waiting....then exposed as a little one dimensional and vulnerable against tough man Brian Vera, this is then further highlighted against willie gibbs and alexander sipos where he is shown to look shaky when pressured...official transformation from prospect to suspect

Octavio Lara...raised in the Kronk from an early age, the next Tommy Hearns...thousands showed up for his debut, but this hype job was stillborn...a few low key defeats and some unscheduled breaks from the ring, and last seen hanging them up some time ago...

Mike Williams was supposed to be the next big thing at heavy in the late 80's.

He scored a TKO win over Quick Tillis on the way up and then lost a split decision to Tim Witherspoon. A few fights later he was stopped by Buster Douglas, took three years off and then returned to the ring and ended up losing to the likes of Alex Garcia & Corrie Sanders. The closest the former Ring Magazine Prospect of the year came to the heavyweight title was playing the part of heavy champ (and Tommy Gunn KO victim) Union Cane in Rocky V.

Well, there Certainly has to B SOME Doubts about Gamboa's Chin, Considering the # of Times he's Tasted the Canvas & the Quality of Punchers that Put him There...

True. If after defeating Joppy Tito would had chosen never to face Hopkins he might have been looked at as THE real middleweight champion and Hopkins as a sort of Dariuz Michalzeweski of the 160 libs division, the ugly duckling with no respect from fans. Anyway Tito was headed to a Roy Jones Jr. fight, so he would had been defeated anyway, which again proves his wilingness to fight the best.
