How can anyone say Pavlik can't handle speed when he has two wins over Taylor - a guy who's speed absolutely spooked Bernard Hopkins?

Hopkins didn't beat Pavlik with hand-speed. He beat him the same way he beats everyone else he has victories over - with dirty tactics, holding and hitting, and his lead right hand.

Taylor Gives the IMPRESSION of Speed...@ Best his Speed is AVERAGE or SLIGHTLY Above...But he's Certainly NOT a "Speed Fighter"...What REALLY Helped Pavlik in that Fight is that Taylor LACKED the Footwork to DISengage...

Bernard Beat Pavlik w/Timing, SPEED, ACCURACY & ANGLES...It was 1 of the CLEANER Wins (Tactically Speaking) that he's Had Since Tito...

I don't know. Not since Hopkins fought RJJ had I seen him so spooked in the ring as he was against Taylor.

I agree that Hopkins won with timing, accuracy and especially angles, and Pavlik didn't do much to adjust.

But I still maintain that Hopkins can't deal cope with opponents with superior hand-speed which is why he lost to Taylor and why he will never fight Chad Dawson.

Pavlik still needs to prove he's the best Middleweight in the world before making a two weight class jump. I don't see him beating Dawson.

    P.S. - I'm not Black either.

I don´t think Dawson reacts to pressure as well as Hopkins, who has far superior footwork, timing and movement in close circles. Dawson has a more energy consuming style of fighting. Pavlik will eventually close that gap and Dawson will have to fight back. Given that Pavlik will again move up in weight they are about equal in the power and chin department. Somebody will get KTFO in the middle rounds. For Pavlik this is like facing a bigger and a little better version of Taylor.

I guess you could have Hopkins beating Taylor in the first fight if you don't know how to score a boxing match. And I don't mean that in an insulting way. The first Taylor/Hopkins fight had 12 very easy rounds to score, with seven of them going to Taylor. Hopkins was more dominant in the late rounds, but that is irrelevant.

The rematch is very debateable because of the nature of the rounds. Taylor unquestionably has one legit win vs. Hopkins.

Pavlik entire boxing stance is slow...everything is in slow motion...Dawson will fight from the outside and win easily....

    Agreed.

Thing is, Pavlik may or may not carry his power. Using Hopkins as a barometer isn't really legitimate because who has hurt hopkins? That kind of negativity keeps you from being KO'd.

Dawson fights hard to hide his chin, if Pavlik carries his power at all he could be dangerous. On top of that, Dawson does seem to take alot of time off, so if Pavlik can weather the KD (or two or three) that he's sure to get from Dawson, he could make this interesting.

Roy, Oscar, Tito, Taylor, Echols, Tarver

Would we say mercado is a better puncher than any of these?

And mercado is really relevant to what I said.

Guess we need to rethink Ray Leonard's chin, after all Kevin howard put him on his ass.

You would need more than "a" biscuit for that task...my guess would be a baker's dozen or so. And if you were going to only use one...it would have to be a REALLY big one...like the size of a hubcap.

It´s very common in football for Brazil or Argentina to struggle in Quito or LaPaz. These places are poison for all athletes that aren´t used to the altitude. I think that played a major role in Hopkins performance that day. These sporting events take place 3000-3500 metres above sea level. NBA players constantly complain about the altitude in Denver, and having no energy in the 4th quarter. Denver is "only" 1600 metres above sea level.

Come on REED, Sure Hopkins got dropped by Mercado but does that mean he doesn't have a solid chin? How many times has it happened since then?

You know as well as anyone else that Hopkins has a good chin.

U're Correct, but Anyone that THINKS he Knows as Much as Jaws Does (& BEATS his White Ethiopian Chest as Loudly) SHOULDN'T Ask "Who's Hurt Hopkins?"...ESPECIALLY When U're ANAL Enough to Start a Crow Thread for a Host of Posters that picked the WINNER of a Fight...

Actually...I don't see where REED said Hopkins didn't have a solid chin. Jaws asked who hurt Hopkins and REED correctly answered Mercado, but I didn't REED anything in REED's posts where he said there was anything wrong with Hopkins' chin. All he did was answer Jaws' question. Saying a fighter was hurt in one fight is not the same as claiming that fighter is lacking in the chin department.

Jaws is willing to be anal and split hairs when he thinks it will suit him (as in the drinking cocaine discussion where he clung to the notion that you could drink it while totally avoiding the results of doing so, which was the actual point of the discussion) and he doesn't seem to like it when someone does it back as in the case of his attempt at a rhetorical question that was foiled by REED.

Hopkins wasn't primed for that fight at all. Not only just because of age and experience either. Where that fight was had everything to do with Bernards performance that night.

I remember reading that Hopkins had trouble with the gym he was supposed to use and had some other issues (including food) that interfered with his fight preparation.

The Mercado fight was the only time I saw Bhop ever hurt and one of those kd's was super legit. Like many of you said, he was fighting at a high altitude which is not pleasant.

I thought JT hurt him in the first round of the first fight or maybe the second round. He hit Hops with a right and Hops looked stunned. He has a good chin though. I hope no one is disputing that.
