I don't mean a duck job, I'm talking about premature retirement.

Manny Pacquiao to retire from boxing

    By Graeme Bradley

Pound-for-pound boxing champion Manny Pacquiao said he will retire after his next fight in October.

Pacquiao confirmed his reputation as the greatest fighter in contemporary boxing by knocking out Ricky Hatton in the second round of their bout, but the Filipino now feels it is time to move on.

The winner of the highly anticipated fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and Floyd Mayweather Jr may provide the opposition for Pacquiao’s last bout, while rumours regarding a possible match up with are also in circulation.

Pac Man, who was awarded "The Greatest Boxer of the Decade 2000s" by RING Magazine, is set to move into politics upon retiring from the sport.

Despite a failed attempt to win a congress seat in his native Phillipines, Pacquiao has promised to stand in the general election 2010 when he has left boxing behind him.

Considered a national hero in the Philippines, Pacquiao’s popularity in the ring may have hindered his success out of it, with die-hard fans declaring his failure to secure a congress seat as a victory for his boxing career.

The winner of JMM or Mayweather would have retired him anyway.

How in the hell would it be "premature"? Manny Pacquiao has achieved everything and more in this sport and he owes nothing to anyone. His scenario isn't like Mayweather's. There is only really one big fight left out there for him and fingers crossed, we get it in October.

It's premature in that he'd be leaving at the top of his game and still in his prime.

Well, I don't neccessarily view that a premature. I think leaving before you have accomplished whats demanded of you, or considered right...that would be premature. But looking around, I don't see too many question makrs surrounding Manny Pacquiao anymore. He's fought everyone they've asked him to and more.

Mayweather's career in this regard went down the shitter as he moved from 135. His career @ 130 and 135 were almost unquestionable. He left alot of us (including his fans) wondering if he could really hang with the best 147 pounders in the world.

    But that's just It...

If we DON'T Get the Fight we ALL Want; if we have to "Settle" for Pac-Cotto Instead, Manny WILL Have Retired w/Unfinished Business (Presuming Floyd BEATS JM Marquez)...& Besides All that, MANY Fans Want to See a 3rd Pac-Marquez Fight...

Granted, there WOULDN'T B the OVERWHELMING Sense of UNfulfillment that Accompanied Floyd's BULLSHIT "Retirement", but Manny WILL have Left a Couple Stones UNturned if he DOESN'T End Up Facing Mayweather (@ Least) & Marquez 1 Last Time...

I would actually agree with that and definitely wouldn't argue. It's more opinionated than anything and if he beat Floyd his legacy would be totally secured, but even then I'd call it premature just because he left on top. Maybe I should just call it an early retirement and leave it at that.

Wouldn't be too surprised if it didn't happen. Arum was on the same site I got that from mentioning next opponents and Floyd's name didn't pop out of his mouth. He mentioned Cotto, Mosley, and Valero of all people. He actually said all 3 of these fights could happen in 2010, guess he didn't get the memo. Maybe Pac's just trying to use retirement to get himself out of his contract with Arum.

Mate, I don't disagree with you at all. Im operating under the assumption that we will get "the fight" out of Pacquiao. But if we don't, yes, I can see things not being quite as smooth if the R word is taken up.

    Fair Enough...

If Pac Fights Floyd then REED would Also SUPPORT his Decision to Retire Afterwards, Win, Lose or Draw...Even Though REED WANTs to See a 3rd Pac-Marquez Bout, Fighting Floyd would B MORE than Boxing Fans could Ask of Manny...

Apparently when asked who he thinks will win the PBF-vs-JMM fight, Pac has predicted PBF. He based it on PBF's superior speed.

Manny Definitely WOULD Return to the Ring, Eventually...The Dude Absolutely Looooooooooooooves what he's Doing...We've ALL Seen that Perpetual GRIN on his Face, as he's Walking to the Ring...Manny WILL NOT B Able to Replace that Feeling in Any Other Capacity:nono:...

Moreso, as BELOVED as Manny is in the Phillipines, Fans Love U Most WHEN U'RE STILL FIGHTING...The Build-Up to the Next Fight, Fight Night Itself & the Ensuing Weeks After is when a Cat like Manny RIDES that Wave of Popularity w/his Countrymen to its HIGHEST Peak...If he Retires, w/In a Year or So, Manny would Start MISSING that Over-the-Top Level of ADULATION & ANTICIPATION that he Generated when he was Active...

Tito Trinidad is STILL Treated like a King in Puerto Rico, yet Tito OPENLY Admits that it's NOT Quite the Same in "Retirement" as it is when he's ACTIVE...

I am certain we are going to see Manny-Cotto next, and I am not sure Manny wins that one, as I am going to have to take a hard look at Miguel vs. Clottey coming up.

Not really because knowing Arum he'd make Cotto-Pac regardless of if Cotto beats Clottey or not.

so, questioning pacquiao to make him fight someone he's already beaten twice, and thinking Clottey can beat Cotto all in one thread.:bears:

Pacquiao could retire TODAY and be greater all time than anyone since Leonard.

Take a good look at that resume, with the exception of Marquez, filled with fighters on the downside of their careers and Manny still managed to lose to one in Morales.

That can be argued.Barrera and Morales was doing just fine before they fought Pacquiao. Why is it that everytime Pacquiao beats a fighter its because there shot?

Is he really that bad of a fighter?

Morales was doing just fine, then he beat Pac, then lost to Raheem of all people, was Morales doing just fine then?

MAB was on borrowed time, been in wars. Do you honestly believe that Pac fought MAB when he was at his best?

I don't give credit to DLH for beating Chavez, even though, Chavez was "doing just fine."

What you should be asking is Why is it that everytime Pac beats a fighter, the question is able to be even raised if they were shot?

Manny is the #1 p4p fighter in the world right now, NO QUESTION, but when we start saying "top 10 fighter all time" or "best fighter since Leanard", there is something wrong.

LOL CHavez was in no fuckng way doing "just fine". He was fighting nobodies and wasn't considered among the very best in the world.

Barrera? He was a unanimous top 5 P4P fighter and at his ABSOLUTE PEAK in terms of recognition and regard, coming off a string of career best wins.

Not quite the same thing at all.

Chavez wasn't considered among the very best in the world? Just two years removed from beating Taylor, ONE loss on his record, I think your recolection of where Chavez was regarded back then is delusional.

MAB was at his absolute peak? Coming off wins over Kelley and Tapia? If Morales didn't exist, would MAB ever have been ranked top 10 p4p? Junior Jones was SEVEN years prior to his fight with Pac. To think MAB was at his absolute peak is rediculous.

Absolute peak or not, MAB was a clear favourite in this fight. He was way more highly regarded than Pac.

Ok, fine, so this means Pac is the best fighter since Leanord?
