He said he missed one charity event in order to visit a childhood friend of his who's in the military and suddenly rumors began flowing as to his whereabouts. He said after a while he just started laughing about them.

Anyways, he said he's with HBO which is the reason he's not in the tournament but that he's in favor of it's happening and that that's what has to happen in boxing for it to become popular again - the best fighters facing eachother consistently.

He's hoping to clean out what's left of 160 in light of Abraham's move to 168, saying he'd like to fight Sturm for his WBA strap.

They also asked him about the Hopkins match. He said, yeah that he found out what it feels like to loose, but he assured the radio interviewers that it was not "him" in there, that he couldn't do the things he wanted to because of his shoulder, but he finished by saying, yeah I got my butt kicked and it's a learning experience to lose.

He said he could still face Abraham later on at 168 but made the point that the boxers aren't always to blame for fights not happening. That Arum didn't want the fight in Germany, and Abraham's people didn't want it in the U.S.

I just wonder if Pavlik has a shot in hell of beating Kessler who will probably emerge the winner of the tournament. Or does Pavlik stay at 160 where there really isn't a whole lot of competition?

beating Hopkins would have helped. The fact he was taken apart killed him.

    Nah...

What "Killed' Pavlik was Moving Back Down to 160 & Facing JOE BLOW...If he had Moved Back & Fought Abraham, that Would've LESSENED the Impact of the Hopkins Fight SOMEWHAT...Instead, Pavlik Took Some Time Off, Fought a Jr. Middleweight & Now he's Been on the Shelf Again...

Now that Abraham has moved up, the ONLY fight at 160 thats interesting is Pavlik-Williams. No one cares to see Pavlik fight boring ass Sperm, even if he does hold a belt. If Pav ever wants to be a star, beating Tall Paul would help. And if he doesnt fight Williams, then fuck it already! He needs to move up 168, cause thats where the best competition is. But then of course his groupies will use the bullshit excuse of Pavlik being "undersized" at 168, even though the guy is fuckin 6'2" with a supermiddle frame.

Time to step up Ghost! Bute is free... why not make Bute-Pavlik?

I dont think B-Hop would waste his time. And there'd be no great demand for it either. B-Hop dominated Kelly to the point where an excuse goes out the window. Pavlik coulda fought the fight of his life that night, and he'd still have been schooled.

No he shouldn't.. He is exciting but it is hard to market a guy who got battered and shut out by a 45 year old man.

Rubio isn't a Jr MW. He's just a shitty mandatory who Pavlik HAD to face. There is no excuse if he faces Sergio Mora next though.

I doubt his promoter would let him rematch Hopkins. And as shitty as he looked in the first fight, I believe him when he says he should've cancelled the fight. But I still don't think he'd win a rematch. He'd give a much better account of himself but I don't think he'd win.

And I don't buy the bull-shit that he belongs at 160. He's said himself it kills him to make weight. It's only a matter of time before he'll be fighting at 168. He should fight Andrade on HBO. That'd make a splash. Especially if he could stop him. But either way you know it'd be an exciting fight.

But from what I heard on the radio, his plan is to fight Sperm, which will obviously be another easy fight for him.

But I agree. He really fucked himself after the Hopkins fight by not making a fight with a Abraham, but he "did" make it a point to say the fighters aren't always at fault when a fight doesn't come off, and that that was the case when it came to him and Abraham.

If he starts fighting a bunch of junior middle-weights I'm going to be really disappointed.

He should hang around for a few years taking on an interminable line of mediocre middleweight contenders, maybe even compile a record number of title defences, while waiting for and preying upon undersized elite fighters who want to have a try at the middleweight title...he would retire a legend :kidcool:

Seriously though, apart from paul willaims maybe, the trouble is that there are few good middleweight left who might make for entertaining matchups....the best left, such as Sturm, Mundine, Mora, do not make for great fights IMO...other than that, also rans like zbik, sylvester, macklin aren't on his level

I don't know that the reason Pavlik-Williams didn't come off was Pavlik not stepping up.

Pavlik's comments on the supermiddleweight tournament were very Mayweatheresque,... so much for the blue collar hero, 'doin' it for the boxing fans' ,...he's as oppurtune as the piece of shit he lost to.

PAVLIK CHANGES HIS TUNE ABOUT TOURNAMENT!

    http://www.vindy.com/news/2009/jul/1...on-hbo/?pavlik

Pavlik wants to fight on HBO
    Tuesday, July 14, 2009
Champ has second thoughts on Showtime’s tourney; says “big-timeâ€￾ boxers fight on HBO.

    By Joe Scalzo

YOUNGSTOWN — When Showtime announced its lineup last week for its upcoming super middleweight tournament, some boxing fans wondered, “Why wasn’t Kelly Pavlik involved?â€￾

Initially, Pavlik said he would have been interested, but after researching the tournament over the past week, he’s changed his mind.

“Why would I be in that tournament when I’m a middleweight?â€￾ he said. “They never asked me and I never wanted to join.

“Let them beat each other up. Let them ruin their careers for peanuts.â€￾
The round-robin tournament will include some of the biggest names in the division — Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, Jermain Taylor, Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell — and IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham, who will relinquish his belt and move up.

Each fighter is guaranteed three bouts, with points awarded based on the results. (Three points for a knockout, two for a decision, one for a draw.) The top four advance to the single-elimination finals.

It’s a big career risk for what Pavlik considers a small payoff — about $3 million or $4 million for the winner, he said.

“Those guys are fighting for peanuts,â€￾ said Pavlik. “They’re going to burn their whole career and for what? Nobody watches Showtime.

“Trust me, when the winner of that tournament fights his next fight, it’ll be on HBO.â€￾

HBO is the biggest network for boxing and most of Pavlik’s biggest fights have been on that network in recent years, including his two bouts against Taylor and his knockout of Edison Miranda.

Although Pavlik’s latest bout, a 10th-round knockout of Marco Antonio Rubio in Youngstown in February, was broadcast on independent pay-per-view, Pavlik made it clear he wants to fight for HBO.

“I like HBO,â€￾ he said. “I will fight for HBO. All the big-time fighters like Floyd Mayweather, [Manny] Pacquiao, [Miguel] Cotto, Shane Mosley, the Klitschkos — they all fight on HBO.â€￾

Although Pavlik has been out of the spotlight in recent months, he still considers himself one of the five biggest names in boxing.

Some have argued that he needs to do a better job promoting himself on a national level, particularly if he wants to earn bigger paydays, but Pavlik disagrees.

“I’ve got enough going on right now,â€￾ he said. “There’s not much more that I can do just by me making an appearance with the camera shining on my face.â€￾

Although several middleweights are eager to fight Pavlik, he has set his sights on WBA champion Felix Sturm. (Pavlik holds the WBC and WBO belts, while Abraham’s IBF belt is up for grabs.)

Problem is, HBO recently offered just $2 million for a Pavlik-Sturm bout and Pavlik said he’s not willing to fight for such a low figure.

Although that statement may not sit well with some fans, Pavlik would likely clear about $300,000 from that fight after taxes and other deductions. That’s not enough for a title fight, he said, and said it’s no different from LeBron James wanting a maximum contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He wants to be paid what he’s worth, he said.

“I fought my way up for seven years, I’ve fought for $3 million and $2.5 million a fight, why decline that much?â€￾ he said. “Yeah, the economy is bad, but there’s still more money out there.

“That’s like [Browns quarterback] Brady Quinn playing for $300 a week. It’s bull[crap].â€￾

Pavlik said he’s content to stay at 160 pounds for a few years before moving up in weight to fight the winner of the Showtime tournament.

“Whoever the winner is,â€￾ he said, “I’ll kick his [butt].â€￾ <!--IBF.ATTACHMENT_444371-->

I dont know, I've been out of the loop for a little while, what I do know is that he should be in this little fixture along with Librado Andrade, the IBF supermiddleweight champion.
