Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.,son of the Pride of Puerto Rico, three division champion Wilfredo Vazquez, scored an impressive KO win over four time title challenger, Cecilio Santos from Mexico. Santos was supposed to give Vazquez Jr. his hardest test to date, but turned out to be one of his easier victims when a body shot send Santos to the canvas and was unable to get up before the tenth count. Vazquez Jr. retained his WBO Latin super bantamweight belt. Vazquez Jr. improved his record to 16-0-1 (13 KO). Sure, Santos isn't exactly a great opponent (his record fell to 23-11-3 (13 KO), but this was a good match for the young prospect who I understand never had an amateur career. What worries me is that they are already talking about a title shot for Vazquez Jr. The kid has potential but is still green. Needs like 10 more fights before thinking about a title fight (all the current 122 lbs champs would destroy him at this point). He is currently ranked #9 by the WBO.
Hopefully his dad will polish him a little more, particularly his defense, before he climbs the ring for a title. What's the story with Israel Vazquez belt? I was checking the WBC rankings and they have a japanese guy as champion and Vazquez name was nowhere to be found. BTW: Juanma Lopez has Rafael Marquez as the #1 contender for the WBO. I hope this mandatory fight happens soon.
