He pushed Tito to the limit. Damn It still surprises me how tough Vargas was.
wow :bears: I hadn't watched that one in a while.. that was great I love how they say after Vargas gets dropped "that's it! Vargas NEEDS to score a knock out to win this figh..". BAM! Tito drops him again!:bears::bears::bears:

I remember right before the first KD that it seemed like Vargas had it in his head that he could just got right at Tito in the same aggressive fashion that he'd recently defeated Quartey with a few months prior. Tito's counter hooks showed him the error in his thinking.
I don't like watching the end of that fight. Vargas takes too much of a beatdown in the 12th, his corner and the ref should both be ashamed.
Yeah you can see in the 12th after the 2nd KD that he was done, when Jay Nady was askin him to come forward Vargas couldn't even do it...Nady had to ask 5 times...Vargas was out of it, the guy had too much heart for his own good...it ruined him.
As I recall it was something along the lines of 'NOW we see'..or....'your talkings over lets find out'. something like that.
People do sometimes have a tendency to look back at victories and re-judge them based on what the loser later accomplishes. I suppose in some cases this may have some merit, such as when the loser goes on to have an illustrious career and becomes a HOF'er. But for the most part I think that victories should stand untarnished by what happens after. Coming into this fight, Vargas was unbeaten and frankly had never really been hurt. I remember him saying in pre-fight interviews that Trinidad had been dropped a number of times, but that he had never even been wobbled. Which was true. Vargas had an amazing chin, he sort of tucked it a bit, and could withstand some powerful shots with no ill effects. This was one of the reasons I thought he had a good chance to win this fight. And you can see in the video that Vargas's toughness DID keep him in the fight and DID give him the chance to win, even to a point where Trinidad was feeling hopeless. This was Vargas's stand, his true moment of a supreme test, and I think he showed that he was 100% warrior, willing to die in the ring if need be. But he just wasn't quite good enough to beat one of the best 154 lbers. ever IMO. Had Vargas not gotten up in the first round, I think his career would have been longer and better post-fight. It was because he stayed in this fight for 12 rounds that he ended up taking what turned out to be permanent damage to himself.
I agree with a lot of that and remember before this fight I had no idea who would win it. I don't know where you gather that Tito ever felt hopeless in that fight though. Did he say that during the interview? Because Tito usually thrived on breaking a guys will and he's never lost a give and take affair. Only times he lost was during fights where he was completely outclassed.
