Of all the people who are guaranteed not to take MMA seriously enough to cross train properly it's him. He barely bothered learning to box, ffs.:lol:

Why boxers think they can just crossover to mma and do great? Its nothing but arrogance.

ray mercer beat....I'm sorry....AN AGING PAST-HIS-BEST RAY MERCER...beat an ex UFC champ, so boxers and wrestlers have pretty good chances to make it big in MMA.

If Mayorga can learn a sprawl and takedown defense, he will have success.

Not Only that, but when U Factor in the 4 oz. Gloves, U Certainly CAN'T Rule Out ANY Accomplished Boxer's Chances of Transitioning to MMA...If a Boxer Lands FLUSH on an MMAist, Shit's Gonna Happen....But ELITE Level MMAists can OFFSET the 1 Dimension that an Accomplished Boxer would Bring to the Cage....

There have been cases of boxers going into MMA, without really training for all the techniques, and getting their arses handed to them....but to my memory, that has been mainly old, shot boxers, far removed from their best....physically diminished.

Mayorga, in those terms, isn't all that far removed....it wasn't long ago that he pushed Shane Mosley all the way.

He's not a pretty fighter to watch, but he's not as novice like as some will have you believe....his power is his main asset, but his punches, whilst wild, are pretty quick, and very accurate. I always remember the right uppercut he landed against Oscar, that was a quality punch that very few are capable of landing.

I can't see Mayorga taking the sport as seriously as he should do if he wants to really succeed, but if he can at least get himself in good physical shape, then it could be the first case of seeing a high level boxer competing in MMA.

you are right on the money, Mayorga brings a somewhat wild and unorthodox style which could really work well in MMA. He has a great chin and heavy hands. Two great assets. The difference with Mayorga is exactly what you said, he is very accurate. I doubt Mayorga will take it serious though and it will be more of a sideshow than anything.

Give him Maia as a warm-up. I want to see whether a pro can kill an amateur with one punch.

Maia would sub Mayorga in less than 30 seconds.

He didn´t even last 30 seconds against a shitty boxer like Marquardt. Oh yeah Mayorga doesn´t have the stand up defense of Marquardt. :atu:

To Mayorga's advantage, he's not exactly the type to stand back and size somebody up. A boxers best chance might well be just to make it a 30 second fight in their mind and try and get the KO before getting taken down.:dunno: Plus, he's naturally strong and stocky as fuck, so it's not like a stiff breeze is gonna take him down like some boxers. I'll be interested to see what happens.

yeah, i'm not sure what style is the best approach for a boxer in MMA. I guess if you had to pick one (an all-rounded style would obviously be best) then a more aggressive style makes sense....if you are a counter puncher who stays on the outside, you are gonna have a hard time dealing with kicks....but someone like Mayorga is gonna come at you, maybe wild by world championship boxing standards, but by MMA standards, his speed, power and accuracy is gonna be scary. Obviously such aggressive tactics will make him susceptible to clinches and guys just pulling guard on him asap....if he's serious, that's what he's got to work on avoiding

Marquardt would fucking KILL Mayorga. You're out of your damn mind man, you're talking about guys who are 30 pounds apart. It really just sounds like you have no clue what you're talking about.

So you think Manny Pacquiao couldn´t knock you out with one punch because you might be 50 pounds heavier than him ? Maia ran into a punch like even a bloody amateur wouldn´t. Jumped in the air with his hands down and his chin in the air. But whatever, keeping telling yourself that these guys are awesome stand-up fighters, like Arlovski, who gets knocked out cold by some fat dude in ten seconds or who was it Dos Santos fucked up? Werdum or Gonzaga?
These guys stand up is about as good as Mayorga´s subs.

I think Ray Mercer's KO of a ridiculously out of shape, past him prime and overconfident Tim Sylvia has fooled people into thinking boxers will do much better in MMA then they actually will.

Don't get me wrong, a boxer with power such as Mercer of Mayorga will always have a puncher's chance, and I'm sure Mayo will be matched up with fighters taylor made for him that will make him look like a beast, but 95 out of 100 times, if you match a world class boxer with a world class MMA fighter in the cage, the MMA fighter is gonna come out on top.

I never said anyone's stand up was great, you're just going on about some nonsense. You should seriously just stick to the boxing forum.
