It has been posted on Irish forums that middle weight Darren Sutherland is dead. Sutherland won a bronze at the Olympics. I hope this is BS but the story is gathering pace..:dunno:
Nothing on the BBC (like most Englishmen I don't believe anything until the BBC says it's true ::), but this would be an appalling shock... MTF ray:
gosh i hope not.....nothing on google news so fingers crossed that they are just rumours. There are some people who get a kick out of making shit up and seeing it spread like wildfire
Dude I aint making it up and hope its BS. I only posted the thread so you guys could confirm or dismiss the rumor.
Apparently its going to be offical any minute. http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/14092009/58/irish-boxer-sutherland-found-dead.html http://www.rte.ie/sport/boxing/2009/0914/sutherland.html R.I.P
...you beat me to it. Once again boxing has lost another good guy. I was never sure how far Darren would go, he impressed early but he struggled in his last fight. Now we'll never know. I remember him being on Steve Bunce's boxing hour a couple of times, came across as a very humble, polite, person...he always had a smile on his face, and wasn't interested in getting involved in any slanging matches with some of our more cocky super middleweight prospects. In fact, this current crop of youngsters (that includes George Groves, James De Gale,Tony Jefferies, and of course Sutherland) was seen as the most exciting in years, and it was hoped that some way down the line, they'd rival Benn/Eubank/Watson/Collins as a domestic golden era for the division.
Very Very likable guy. As an amateur this guy was awesome, he lost his way a little at the Olympics but he had great potential. This is a really sad day for Irish and boxing in general.
Jesus. How awful. I liked him. To be honest I haven't seen one of his pro fights, but he was possibly my favourite fighter in the olympics, he was solid, more of a pro style, and more entertaining than the others, more aggressive. Why did he do it?
his manager Frank Maloney is currently in hospital recovering from a heart attack.....this coupled with the stress from the Fury-McDermott scoring debacle obviously was too much for him.
it is now being reported that Maloney's heart attack was only minor, and occured before he found Sutherland dead
