24/7? The stars themselves? Renewed interest on boxing? MMA influence? PPV access by more providers?

Because fights like Pacquiao-Cotto and Mayweather-Marquez and even Pacquiao-Hatton are NOT bigger than De la Hoya- Trinidad was in 1998, yet they still put up a bigger numbers than that megabout.

Was wondering the VERY same thing earlier today, Ron. I figured it was greater access to cable or something. But it must be said 24/7 has been an enormous success and has definitely played a very helpful role. The difference is sales between say DLH-Hopkins & DLH-Floyd is NOT accounted for by Floyd's marketability prior to that fight.

How about the fact that May/Marquez and Pac/Cotto were only the second and third HBO PPV's this year?

good point. but may-hatton + pac hatton comparable success too so it seems to be a broader trend ever since DLH-Floyd,imo

Renewed interest in combat sports as a whole perhaps? MMA fans respect handskills, and that's a boxer's bread and butter.

I think in the case of Pacquiao, he brings somewhat of the Usain Bolt 'freak of nature' aspect to the table. I think people who aren't even that educated in the sport recognise that he is a special talent.

I think by Floyd and Manny fighting De La Hoya, there was very visual passing of the baton. Perhaps if the two of them were super-middleweight contenders, their popularity wouldn't have sky-rocketed in the same way.

24/7 doesn't have too much to do with it. Check Jones-Calzaghe numbers.

Mayweather, Cotto, Marquez and Pac are huge stars.

i wouldnt consider marquez or cotto to be huge stars.

I think there were many reasons why that fight didn't do so well (what were the numbers btw?), 24/7 serves a build up well, but it can only polish a turd so much. Calzaghe isn't the most engaging personality, and I think they only did a couple of episodes, not the usual four.

As far as I know - Tito v DLH did 1.4 million PPV buys, still more than Floyd v JMM and Pac v Cotto, individually.

I really think it is the 24/7 series that is pushing the PPV sales over the edge. I still think people are selling Floyd short here on his impact on the PPV sales its not just that the 24.7 series has exposed him to the public as an unlikeable, pompous jackass (whether its an act or not is another story) but Floyd has become a mainstream figure with his appearances on Dancing with the Stars and the WWE events. You have to give Floyd credit for getting a fight with a non-threat, non-PPV fighter like JMM as a welter over 1 million buys.

Pacquiao is also an anomoly because he appeals to almost everyone. Almost all of his fights are thoroughly entertaining, with brutality, high punch rate and constantly perceived dangerous fights. He's a national hero in his country and that boosts him a little bit even in the US.

the number i have is 250,000 buys. And you're right they only did 3 episodes of 24/7 for that. I really think people realized Jones was washed up by that point... because Jones usually sold pretty well in his career. In January of the same year him and Tito did 500,000.

    Combination of factors:

lack of a PPV heavyweight attraction

increased buying power of interested parties

    24-7

Other than a combo of Pac, Mosley, and PBF, there isn't a viable PPV out there for 2010 IMHO. Maybe Hatton/Marquez...

I think it has to do with the IMPORTANCE of the bouts in terms of HISTORY of the sport. That's why a fight between Floyd and Manny sells itself. If Floyd is so certain of victory why doesn't he accept 40-40 with remainder 20% going to the WINNER? Or 10%? Or 5%?

THE WAY Manny Fights is an OBVIOUS Factor...Being the LITTLE Guy Taking On Larger Men is Another Factor...& The FACT that Manny ISN'T Black, White OR Latino is Another...REED Will Go Out on a Limb & Say that Roughly 90% of ALL Mainstream Boxing Fans R Either Black, White or Latino...In a Weird Way, The Fact that Manny Is NONE of those Makes him Appeal to ALL Of those in REED's Opinion...

24/7 is Helping as Well...The Reality Series BOOM has Changed Mainstream Television as we Know it, so it Makes Sense that its' Impact Trickles Down to BOXING was Well...

Just like in 2007 when Floyd-Oscar was the fight to save boxing. New stars always come along.

Also JCC Jr will be thrown in there with a legit fighter. The Valero saga, Berto, if he beats Mosley will be a superstar looking for a megabout. The loser of MW-Pacman will still have a big fight in the fall, maybe even a rematch. Cotto is 2 wins away from another big fight.....

    2010 will be fine..

  23. Joe King

Really? Who are they since 2007? Manny was already on the scene by then. Cotto was selling out MSG, Hatton was established as well.

the premise of this thread was based on the basis that pac-cotto outsold Tito-DLH.... which is not true!
