One thing is certain is terms of MARKETABILITY: Mosley > Clottey I think both fights do over a million but Mayweather-Mosley will do MORE buys. Pacquaio-Clottey is a sure fire ACTION fight. Mayweather-Mosley will be a boxing match if Mosley ALLOWS it to be. It is up to him to bring the SUGAR to the fight. Mayweather would put everyone to SLEEP, and not in the powerpunch KO sense, and couldn't care less, as long he is allowed to SPIN afterwards. Perhaps the winners could meet in the fall...
Yes as I stated in my argument that Mosley is much more marketable than Clottey but do you think that Pacquaio-Clottey will do over a million? I think so. And Dallas Stadium will bring in a lot of revenue.
Mayweather-Mosley for sure. If Pac-Clottey were the only PPV in the foreseeable future, it might push 1 million. With Mayweather-Mosley as close as six weeks behind it - I seriously doubt it. It's also worth saying that I wouldn't see Mayweather-Clottey doing 1 million, and Pac-Mosley would easily crack that number. But the fights are what they are. Arum might've boxed himself in this time. He had leverage with Pac-Cotto pulling in nearly $70 million in PPV revenue. Not only is it a given that Mayweather-Mosley will do more, but it's possible that we see a 2:1 ratio in PPV buys between the two shows.
I know the economy is bad for a lot of people but six weeks is plenty of time in between PPV events. Mayweather-Clottey wouldn't do a million because Mayweather always needs a BETTER marketable fighter. De la Hoya, Hatton, even Marquez. I think Pacquaio-Mosley would do a higher number of buys than Mayweather-Mosley. Remember Pacquaio is the HOTTEST commodity in boxing right now with EXCITING historical fights. I don't think Mayweather-Mosley will do close to 2 million. I hope it does but I don't think it will.... Arum is matching his fighters up and G is matching their fighters up. At some point in the future, for the good of boxing, and to settle who is the best p4p fighter and the best welter of the world, they have to match up the winners of Pacman-Clottey and Mayweather-Mosley.
I personally think Pacman is a bigger draw right now than Floyd. Especially after Pacman's blazing performances of late, and Floyd's pathetic safety first performance against a 147 pound featherweight. I bet Pacman Clottey would do better numbers than Floyd Clottey. Or rather, either of them against an opponent that nobody really cares about, I think Pacman would do better. But Pacman Clottey as much as Flid - Mosley? Of course not. I don't think Pacman Clottey does a million buys, probably more like 650,000 to 750,000. Nobody cares about Clottey. Gay Marquez has more fans than Clottey. Flid - Mosley is a good fight though, and even though I feel Shane's fanbase is smaller than it should be, he is very well known and highly regarded. It should do over a million no problem, probably 1.2 million or thereabouts.
Here's my way of thinking: the past two years have clearly shown how boxing fans are and aren't willing to spend their money. 2008 had some good fights, but also a bunch of fights on PPV that nobody asked for. Those fights flopped, in a big way. HBO responded with only 3 PPV shows in 2009. Of the three, Mayweather-Marquez was the least competitive on paper, but there still existed the intrigue of seeing Mayweather for the first time in nearly two years. All three PPV's did huge numbers. In Mayweather-Mosley, you have a fight for which there is a great demand. Therefore, you can justify it being on PPV, and anticipate huge numbers. While Pac-Clottey is an intriguing fight, there was/is little to no demand for it. It's on PPV solely because Arum believes Pacquiao can walk on water and that all of his fights should be treated as an event. But the bottom line is that it's not a fight in which its handlers should have the right to charge $50 to watch from home. Pac-Clottey is on PPV for the sake of being on PPV. Fights/events for which there is little to no demand going in generally don't draw huge PPV numbers. I agree, the mystique of holding it at Cowboys Stadium should fare well in terms of ticket sales. But where a fight takes place has nothing to do with how well it will perform on PPV.
Certainly as a viewer it means nothing in itself, but the fact it is at the Cowboy stadium will generate more publicity for the fight as a whole, and so you'd figure that this would have some, albeit maybe small, impact on PPV sales. Pacman-Clottey as PPV is a test in Pacman's drawing power alone. I think it'll do decent numbers, maybe not a million, but enough to justify for ppv for the men in suits.....we can recognise the match-up as something that won't amount to much of a spectacle (not that i think it is a bad fight), but i think Pacquaio attracts fans because, generally when he fights, he brings excitement.
I'm not sold on the fight doing well at the gate...not 90,000 in the stadium. The configuration will be interesting.
The press tour for the Pacquaio-Clottey fight is today. Pacman is mobbed like a rockstar everywhere he goes. That wouldn't happen with EITHER Mayweather or Mosley. Since the beaten like a dead horse olympic testing debacle, Pacquaio is now more known than ever. He has CROSSOVER appeal. If Mayweather-Mosley does HALF of what Pacquaio-Mayweather would have done, what does that say about Pacquaio's STAR power? I just wish we get to see ALL the high ranked welters to fight EACH OTHER. Is that too much to ask?
Of course Mayweather vs Mosley is a bigger fight. Nobody outside of hardcore boxing fans even knows who he is. however, when the hell did Mayweather sign to fight Mosley? I seriously doubt that happens. So I'll say that Pac vs Clottey will out sell Floyd vs Malignaggi or Mathew Hatton easily.
Mayweather-Mosley will do approximately 1.2-1.25 million buys. Pac-Clottey will do about 750,000-800,000. But that isn't a reflection on either's draw imo. Clottey is an excellent opponent, but Mosley is twice the opponent in terms of excitement and marketability. Mayweather has already proven to be a bigger draw than Pacquiao, while the gap has been closing, mayweather is still ahead of him
The 'must watch' ..."BIG FIGHTS!!" ..mean fuck all if it's two bitch fighters going at it, or it features a known performance enhancing disgrace. I dont sort of get what the hysteria is?.. it's like,.. "help the money making frenzy by all means!!! , you must get into the spirit of this, for the love of Bob Arum!"... I'd rather watch two aggressive fighters with high workrates to be honest, wether it be on a free card, ESPN or whatever.
Pacman did the better PPV numbers in his last fight, he's the bigger draw. And like Jake said, there was the comeback factor of Floyd returning after his "retirement". If he fights a blown up featherweight in his next fight, do you think it would do the same numbers as Marquez?
But I guess Cotto didn't have anything to do with adding to the PPV numbers. That was all Manny right? I'll Holla 5000
Who in the fuck is this dude and where have you been? By the way how's the fam. Hope they are doing good. Tell everyone that the bigdawg family says Happy New Year. I'll Holla 5000
Cotto had something to do with it, just like it being Floyd's comeback fight had something to do with his numbers.
