UFC delays Montreal event to avoid Mayweather

    Last Updated: Thursday, January 21, 2010 | 10:23 AM ET Comments1Recommend1

    The Canadian Press

The UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship, is reluctantly pushing the date of its Montreal mixed martial arts event back a week, to May 8, because of a possible conflict with a Floyd Mayweather boxing match.
UFC 113 was scheduled for May 1 at the Bell Centre. Now it seems Mayweather, boxing's biggest draw, and Shane Mosley will fight the same night in Las Vegas.
Not wanting to lose pay-per-view revenue, the UFC opted to delay the Montreal show.
"We were trying not to go the same night as boxing, but these guys can't get out of their own way," UFC president Dana White said in a text message to The Canadian Press.
"I have never seen anything so dysfunctional as boxing. It's a joke."

White is correct. Boxing is playing too many games with the fans. Like we can't see what they are doing.

It's okay that White made a smart decision. It doesn't have to be justified by anything other than common sense.

Most of those dates are sets many months ahead of time. This is actually something they can control.

Dana is actually playing it smart. This is a battle that doesnt need to be made. He would be stupid to go head to head with one of boxing's biggest draws with most of his headliners being sidelined. Hes just buying his time till hes ready to go head to head with boxing's elite. That time is coming sooner than we think.

Cage fighting peaked last summer at around UFC 100, and the steady decline down the mountain has already started.

I doubt it. The UFC had a tough stretch where because of injuries, they put on some cards that weren't to their standards, but that ends with 109. UFC 110-113 are all pretty loaded, as is the card on Versus. UFC 114 should be awesome too, with the Rampage\Rashad fight and Lesnar taking on the winner of Mir\Carwin.

Also, Strike Force has a damn good card coming up on the 30th, and returns to CBS in April. And Bellator his signed some pretty good fighters for their second season that will air live on Fox Sports, and rebroadcast on NBC and Telemundo.

Factor in the smaller regional promotions that are doing well like Ring of Combat, Shine Fights, MFC, etc, and MMA is doing very well. They've still got a ways to go before they reach the top of the mountain.

Not only that, Network TV deals on the horizon, MMA only needs like 4 more states to be sanctioned in the whole US "New York is pending", huge endorsement deals, schools springing up like wildfire all over the world, extensive media coverage, record breaking PPV sales, and many stars becoming household names. To think that it is on a downslide is ignorant. MMA is definately growing at a very rapid pace.

Based on his hate for MMA.

if the UFC sceduled on top of a Mayweather PPV, ESPECIALLY if it's Mosley which will be a huge fight, they would be stupid. They made a smart move by pushing it out a week. That is all there is too it.

Nobody's denying it wasn't smart, but maybe White would be wise to embrace boxing as a combat sport where both parties could maximize their fan interest with respect and even mutual partnerships. Imagine if Floyd or Manny were to invite some of White's fighter's to his fight as his personal guest and then MMA did the same thing with boxing's fighter's. I think that kind of mutual stance could be beneficial to both sports. Rather than attacking each other they should be working together.

Bro UFC said boxing is DEAD. Now they are changing dates so that they are not going head to head with a boxing PPV because it will have hundreds of thousands of buys less.

That would be awesome, as a fan of both sports I would love to see them co-exist peacefully. It's stupid to me that either side talks about the other.

UFC didn't say anything, Dana White did. I don't care what he says since I don't share his opinion much. It's just smart business to not compete with boxings top draws. BOTH sides would lose business if they were on the same date. It's good for both that they aren't on the same date.

It does seem ridiculous, to diminish and undermine boxing, and act like the UFC is the big thing, then pussy out of going head to head with a big fight.

Hey, if you want to act like UFC is the big daddy of combat sports, follow through, prove it, beat boxing in a head to head PPV event.

    It's already happened. UFC 65 (GSP-Hughes 2) did 500,000 buys, compared to Pacquiao-Morales 3, which did 350,000 buys. November 18th, 2006.

I remember it well, because I didn't get to watch either of them because that was the day I got married.

Then why is Dana hesitant to do it again?
