On February 27 philipino sensation, undefeated KO artist Marvin "Marvelous" Sonsona will face the son of a three division champ, the also undefeated KO artist Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title (the one Juanma Lopez vacated). Sonsona 14-0-1 (12 KO) is the former WBO super flyweight champion, a title he won against another boricua, Jose "Carita" Lopez. Sonsona lost his title on the scales in his last fight when he came over the stipulated weight limit of 115 lbs. His last fight ended in a draw. Vazquez Jr. 17-0-1, (14 KOs)is going for his first title bout. He will have his hands full with Sonsona. This promises to be an exciting fight that will not go the distance. While Sonsona is the heavy favorite and is already an idol for the philipinos, Vazquez Jr. wants to fulfill his father's dream of him becoming a champion {shame on you Chavez Jr. for still fighting taxicab drivers instead of looking for a title bout}. Does anyone knows if this fight will be televised on Showtime or HBO or is just a PPV bout?
PPV, bro. I'll be there as my guy Chris Henry is going to take apart Hugo Garay on that card. Looking forward to meeting and spending time with Vasquez Sr., one of my favorites from the 90's. Karl
He also wears black leggings (or is it pantyhose?):notallthere: ala Angel Manfredy. He is very tall for that division too.
were you at all disappointed at how easily a 40 year old fella dispatched the chap who befuddled hard hittin henry?
Garay is a good, strong, rough, and experienced guy who is going to come to fight, and Henry knows it, and is training accordingly. It very well may go to the cards if Chris can't get him out of there early, so the focus is on Chris to use his jab to good advantage and to relax in there if he can't bang the guy out early. Will be a hell of a fight, that's for sure.
I dont know why Henry would want to try and get him out of there early when Garay has faded down the stretch before. Henry would be better to go to the body early and increase his output as the rounds go on or better yet past the halfway mark. No disrespect but going for broke early could backfire against a guy like Garay whos majority of KO's TKO's come early. Peace.
Are you trying to give away our strategy?:bangh: Chris is very familiar with Garay, as they fought in the world amateur championships 13 years ago in Argentina, and of course Hugo got the nod over there. Chris told me the guy can't knock a cherry off of a pineapple sundae, he can't punch.
I bet he felt the same way about Yusef Mack too. Honestly, thirteen years is a hell of a long time. They were both kids back then, literally. Alot has changed. Should be a good fight.
garay must really suck if smegman thinks hard hittin henry can control him with his jab. henry's jab is hardly one of the finer sticks in the division
How do you think he'll handle the two-division jump in weight? I'm big on Vazquez, but a bit worried that it's too much too soon for him.
Thats really hard to say, mate. Two divisions is really not something young fighters do all at once and you really only see it when some journeyman are selling out. Sonsona obviously isn't doing that and its clear he needs to move up...but seven pounds? He's young enough, IMO. He looks the goods to me.
