We've seen marquez at 147lbs, once. He was embarrassed by Mayweather. We've seen Pacquiao a couple times and he looked great against Oscar and Cotto. So who wins? I ask this question because I was reading in another thread that Pacquiao would have lost to Sanchez at featherweight because he wasn't the man at that weight that he is at Welterweight. People are basing this on how he looked against Marquez. And so I ask...what would happen if they fought at Welterweight? Well, this is the problem with most fight fans. They assume that because pacquiao struggled with Marquez but looked like superman against Cotto that the Pacquiao who fought Cotto is better than the Pacquiao who fought Marquez. No one assumes for one second that it could be all to do with teh style of each opponent. Let me tell y'all right now...Pacquiao against marquez at 147lbs... Same fight as the fights they had at 126 and 130. Close controversial decision for one guy ove rthe other. Don't kid yourselves...
I think that the thing that has changed the most is that JMM is not as quick at 147 as he was lower (he is getting up in years too) while Manny carries his weight well. What made Marquez so effective against Manny was that he had the speed to counter him. I don't think he has it at welterweight, which would tip the sale clearly in favor of Pacman
Pacman looks like a natural at welterweight, Marquez looked vulnerable at 135, and outright out of his element at 147. Styles plays a part of course, but if you can't see that the Pacquiao of today is improved from the featherweight Pacquiao I don't know what to say. He's less wild, more precise, more clinical, and has much better defense and footwork. This is something that is easily observed outside of the Marquez fights. Look at any of Pacquiao's fights at featherweight, then look at the Cotto fight. You'll see a better, more polished fighter. Marquez still gives Pacman some problems and wins a couple of rounds due to matching up with Manny well stylistically, but gets stopped at 147.
Marquez appeared slower because of the style of Mayweather. But guess what..mayweather would have made him look slow at 135 and 130. it's just mayweather's style. marquez can't beat that style. people have to reailize that certain fighters make other fighters look bad or good...not that those fighters are better or worse at those times. i agree that Marquez is out of his element at 147lbs. But so too is pacquiao. Pacquiao is just looking good because he's fighting guys that either coming to him and are/or a little vulnerable/easy to hit (Cotto and Hatton) or else are older unmotivated and weight drained. Put pacman against a slick couter puncher and see how good he looks... I remember that Pacman was favoured to win the marquez rematch because of how good he (Pacman) looked against Morales in 2 and 3. People were saying "pacquiao is a better fighter now and not the one trick pony he was blah blah". For the most part Marquez made him look the same way and most peole think JMM won that second fight. Like I said before.. Marquez vs Pacman at 147lbs. Same fight.
Marquez looked slower at 135 too, because he was slower, he doesn't carry the weight well. It's not even close to being the same fight Sly, don't kid yourself. Manny has proven to be a great welterweight, Marquez has looked utterly out of his depth at welterweight, and even pretty vulnerable at 135. He still gives Pacman problems, but he gets stopped at 147, I would be confident of that, very confident in fact.
You know what, after that PED debacle I started to dislike Pacquiao a bit and have a bit more sympathy towards Mayweather... But then Slystaff resumed posting... Everything is about to change again.
Sorry.... but Fightbeat posters still don't seem to get it that certain fighters make others look bad..not that that fighter is shot or whatever. Everyone here was saying that Barrera was shot when Pacman destroyed him. He proved after that that this wasn't the case. Mayweather would always make Marquez look bad. Pacman would always look good against a vulnerable slugger (Cotto, hatton). Marquez would always make Pacquiao look bad.
Oh and by the way... I'm a Pacquiao fan. My fandom for Pacquiao is second only to Mayweather. :cheer: I've picked or backed Pacquiao in every single fight he's had since beating Barrera the first time..with the exception of the DLH fight which I thought would be a mismatch in Oscar's favour. But after beating Oscar i knew he'd have destroyed both Hatton and Cotto and those on my facebook page can attest to that. :kidcool: Don't worry Sly Haters....I wont be around for much longer. I'm just having fun educating some of you...
This is correct. Styles mean more than anything in boxing. However some other posters don't seem to get it that styles and strengths of fighters can change as years go by and the fighters get up in age and weight
Sly, you'd have the beginning of a point if Marquez wasn't at the tail end of his career and Pacquiao wasn't at his absolute prime right now. Unfortunately, Marquez's best days are clearly behind him and it was rather apparent at 135. Mayweather's performance has everything to do with the fact that Marquez isn't suited at all for 147, and even if he was, father time has caught up with him. Pac deals very well with 147, didn't lose much speed and gained power while moving up. Your post is so ridiculous that one has to wonder if your only goal isn't to pimp up your hero, Floyd Mayweather. Basically, what you're trying to pass up as the result of an incredible analysis is only the product of your fanatism. No, Floyd Mayweather didn't beat a JMM that would give an incredibly close and tough fight to Pacquiao. This guy fought at 126-130 and is long gone now.
It's difficult for me to believe it would be the same fight. Pac carries the weight well and hasn't lost much, if any, speed. Marquez looks slower and too heavy. Marquez was able to fight on even terms at the lighter weight. He would seem overmatched at a heavier weight with less speed.
I think it would be more appropriate to say this... As lovable as the old donkey is, Sly is easily the most transparent poster on fightbeat. If you can't work out the motive of one of Sly's threads within a few nanoseconds, you need to exercise your brain more :kidcool:
:: never before has a man been so misjudged. I have no Mayweather motive in this thread actually. Take the motive at face value...just to show you that fightbeat posters have a tendency to ignore the styles or to give fighters credit and instead say that a fighter is shot or past his best etc when he loses. Marquez STILL gives Pacman hell...trust me. It's a matter of styles. And if we want to talk about Floyd then I'll say this: Floyd would have done that to Marquez at any weight.
As UGTBK said, you're ignoring certain guys styles are effected by weight classes. Hatton looked like ass against the bigger Collazo because his style relied physically bullying fighters. Bob Foster & Wilfredo Gomez went from devastating to mediocre when they moved up one class because they gave up advantages fundamental to the success of their style. Pac's carried every positive attribute up with him including his speed (which has become a much bigger advantage for him) while becoming stronger and more powerful too in an unprecedented way. Marquez's noticably slower at the higher weights, not to mention that his reflex' have clearly slowed as well as was obvious in the DIAZ fight. These agenda driven threads = tedious.
And Mayweather can thank Manny for softening him up first. Mayweather fought a ruined JMM. How many times did JMM hit the deck vs Pac? RUINED I TELL YOU!!! I'm taking a page out of the Tito fan playbook today. ::
Due to his use of steriods and hgh, pacquiao is too big and strong for a guy who uses peepee instead of the real stuff now.
And what if the fight actually took place @ 147 and Manny blew Marquez out of the water? What would it mean?
Pacquiao has a rare case of temporary gigantism,... his skull has expanded, his hands have grown,.. he never gets tired in the ring,.. and he hits as hard as a lightheavyweight all of a sudden,.. I um,.. dont think Marquez stands a chance unless... there's a little clause on the negotiation table that annihilates the fight all together,..
