Isn't it possible the popularity of MMA has improved boxing viewership?

It's similar to Tubbs winning the tournament back in the early 90's. Skills and experience can trump physical advantages or make seeming physical disadvantages into advantages. No one said life was fair.

Pretty much yeah. The whole style of the UFC, from the commentators to the music to the motion graphics and illustration used is FAR more appealing to the younger generation, that are not already a fan of either sport.

I think the way that MMA promotes itself is horrible. It's loud, garish rubbish IMHO and, despite what MMA fans tell me to the contrary, it is almost a direct copy of how the WWF repackaged itself in the mid 1990's.

Watching MMA gives me a fucking headache. Even the annoucing dude (Buffer someone- is he related to Michael Buffer BTW?) gets right on my tits.

And I'm only 28, before people start asking if I'm an old bastard (I am)

MTF - oh yeah I know, I don't like it either (even though it was even more over the top and more glitzy, I preferred Pride's shows by far, stylistically).

But you can't deny, it would appeal to the younger generation over the average boxing broadcast by far, people who weren't acquainted with either sport.

By the way, you're only 28? I'm 28. I thought you were older than me for some reason :kidcool:
Oh and like Z said below, Bruce is Michael's brother, and a really, really, really, really, really poor imitation. He absolutely fucking sucks compared to his brother. Michael is the epitome of suave, his look is good, his voice is good, he does a great job. Bruce is just a chubby little schmo in comparison

Bruce Buffer is Michael Buffer's brother.

Anderson Silva would destroy Chad Dawson in the cage. To say otherwise is foolish. Just as Dawson would beat Silva in a boxing match.

I completely agree with everything you say here - especially the bold... i want to smack someone whenever i hear the commentators say something like "Aw dude that was a SICK combo!!!" or something bush league like that...

but it works. most kids are fuckin numbskulls or meatheads... go to an MMA event sometime, you are surrounded by it, it represents 99% of the crowd. but that's the demographic and it works. in Colorado, at least, it is replacing boxing and its not even close

I hated all of that nonsense in Pride. Some showmanship is expected, but in Pride, and other Japanese organizations, they just go way over the top. The screaming lady, the choreographed dance routines, all that stuff is more annoying than anything. But most Pride fans love it for some reason.

What's funny is, the intro's in Japan are so outlandish and over the top, but when the fights actually start, the crowd just sits on their hands silently like they're at a play.

I can imagine that it would indeed appeal to 'the younger generation', provided that the younger generation are fucking idiots. Which they are, by and large...

I'll take your word for this. It's bad enough getting a headache from the comfort of my own settee without me actually PAYING for the privilege.

Good post. I wish that HBO/Showtime and the promoters would catch on and step up/revitalize the production and promotions.

I guess I'm just an all or nothing kind of guy. I either like the noble, manly, deadpan presentation of boxing, or if you're going to go for it, REALLY go for it like Pride.

I just thought it was funny really, so absurd it was entertaining, including the Japanese woman screaming etc, and I preferred the graphics and massive screens to the UFC.

Me too. I mean, it would be great to entice a newer generation of fans, but I do like our great and classic sport presented the way it is.

I don't want a bunch of faggots prancing around talking about how "sick" boxing is, like they do on MMA telecasts.

Can you imagine Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Leonard, etc all piled into a house, each man aged around 25, slapping the shit out of each other with power-bars and then rolling around on a mat for 3 X 5 minutes in order to determine which of them got the chance to be the next big thing at Lokaz as soon as their Cauliflower ear got too bad for them to "fight" professional??

Because thats what UFC is. A bunch of redneck tattoo fiends, one step removed Chattanoogashillywilly, FL, all fighting it out for fuck all.

HBO tried with KO Nation, but the hip hop culture is too polarizing to whitebread america, I'd say.

There are multiple reasons things work for UFC that boxing could try to copy, but some things just aren't going to happen. People like familiarity and UFC has:

    1. Joe Rogan--a great announcer
    2. Repeat ring card girls
    3. Repeat announcer
    4. Repeat refs
    5. Cool, or at least recognizable, theme song played regularly.
    6. Small pool of fighters so lots of familiar faces.
    7. Ultimate Fighter
    8. The Spike connection TFK mentioned.
    9. Big freaking KO's every show.
    10. Knowledgeable commentary
    11. Brock Lesnar
    12. Dominating champs

    Get over it.

I see you're moving. Did you do a google search for sports bars in the area? You may want to make a few phonecalls before you go out.

UFC is popular because it takes hard work to be a boxer. Anyone with some spare anavar and a mat can be a UFC hero, the same way as anyone with a Play Station can be a Guitar Hero, without actually learning to play the guitar, or learn to read music.

I'm getting my own place so I can order PPV again.

Are you suggesting that tapout shirts are not gay?

Me too. Sometimes it can be a bit grating, but I'd much rather listen to (the late) Reg Gutteridge or some other calm, knowledgeable dude complimenting the action than some mad bastard shouting at the top of his lungs for minute after minute about 'brutal' combos and 'sick' elbows in the face.

From what I have been reading, you dont do much listening, either way.:hump:

J/K Feeblers, I agree with you 100% of the way. Even the cheesemeister who presents it on SKY comes across as far more amenable than that roid chimp Joe Roidgan, a-whoopin and a-hollering about some "strike" or "knee".....:boohoo:

another part of the reason is the in the USA any sport that requires too much attention span is difficult for them to really follow. football (soccer) & boxing are prime examples. hockey is the least popular of the major sports, its no coincidence that you also have to pay attention to it the most (between mlb, nba, nfl & nhl).

american football - you only have to pay attention in short bursts - out of a full 3 hour game telecast you only really have to pay attention to about 30 minutes of action not counting replays. baseball you don't ever have to pay attention until the pitcher let's go of the ball. basketball is pretty entertaining just on account of the gigantic, athletic freaks of nature jumping up and down a hardwood court all game.

mma requires much less attention span, you actually have to pay attention to the majority of every round of a boxing match. its no wonder this country's interest in boxing peaked when Tyson was in there knocking people out in 30 seconds.

damn kids these days you play them some metal music, throw in some shiny objects, explosions, two guys in a cage with tattoos and bodyslams and these totally 'sick' commentators telling you how 'badass' everything is and you basically can't compete with that.
