Holmes vs. Lewis Tua Ibeabuchi Vitali Wlad Frazier I wouldn't pick Holmes in a single one of these, except possibly Tua, and even then, I'm not sure. Thoughts?
You're not sure whether Larry Holmes would beat David Tua? Surely you jest...(I'd pick the Holmes that beat Mercer to beat Tua) In any event.. I'd pick Lennox Lewis to possibly beat Holmes. Frazier-Holmes is a toss up (given how close Holmes-Norton was) Holmes would decision Vitali and ibeabuchi. Wlad, stylewise, would give Holmes HELL but I have to pick Larry to KO him at some point though. Holmes will win 12 rounds out of 12 against Tua.
I'll give you that, 'pon second thought. Vitali has an awkward style and he's very tall. I think Holmes will decision him eventually though. I don't see any knockouts in that one.
Lewis UD Holmes Holmes 120-108 Tua Holmes UD Ike Vitali SD Holmes Holmes TKO11 Wlad after an even fight Holmes UD Frazier
BTW, I seriously think Holmes-Tua is a debatable one circa 98-99. Tua vs prime Holmes? Holmes wins every minute of every round. Wlad is a fairly easy win for Holmes IMO. Holmes would land with enough regularity and force to make Wlad fight like enough of a bitch for Larry to control the majority of the fight. 8-4 or so. Over 15 there's a good chance Wlad gets stopped late.
Borrowing a page from the LOK fightbook, I think Holmes could have outjabbed Tua with using his snake
Lewis would have the best chance. Holmes beats the rest w/o a doubt. Wladimira is too soft to beat a prime Holmes. Vitali is too robotic. And if you think Tua would have ANY chance, I suggest you never post again. Double didnt you once say that Golota would have beaten Holmes? Nuff said!
Just as I see it. Some are closer than others, some are arguable either way, but I think, on probabilities, I'd back him to win all of these fights, sans Frazier.
Why do you so greatly underrate Holmes? Give me Holmes in all of them, although with Lewis I haven't a clue how that'd end up.
Thoughts? It's not all surprising that you take a great fighter from before you were a boxing fan and then try to shoot him down. It's gotten rather old. And you're not sure who would win Holmes-Tua? That's just    Who would you pick in Holmes vs Valuev??
As Ive previously said, I think Lewis will struggle with anybody who can take his jab from him and in those cases usually reverts to FIGHTING (which he was also exceptionally good at). Holmes would do that all night, but also stand up to him, beat him to the punch & outcraft him, when the big guns came out too. I actually think Holmes wins this a little more comfortably than most people would imagine. 7-4-1, 9-5-1 or similar. Surprisingly frustrating night for Lewis.
This is how I see the Lewis-Holmes fight playing out.... (It's not just what each can do..you have to picture them both in the ring with their styles and how they'll matchup) It'll be a boring awkward type of fight. Lewis and Holmes will start off trading jabs and occasionally right hands. Lewis will clinch Larry alot to break his rhythm and attempt to use his size and strength to bully larry somewhat. Holmes would not be abe to land his right hand on lewis as easily as he does most opponents simply because Lewis is very tall AND he fights tall. On the other hand Larry would be faster than Lewis at getting off his punches. Lots of clinching. Larry get's dropped at least once in the fight. Lewis gets stunned at least once and has to cover up from a Holmes attack. Close, sloppy, fight all the way to a close decision. I think lewis gets it.
I would take a prime Golota to beat Holmes. Yes. See. This is exactly why I posted this - to address the astounding degree to which Holmes is over-rated. Holmes was almost never in an easy fight. In fact, he had to fight Marvis Frazier, in what, his 10th fight, before he was able to have an easy night. He barely got by Witherspoon. But he's going to beat Wlad? And X, yes, Vitali is robotic, but how does that hurt his chances against Holmes? Who is nervous in the ring, likes to fight tall, and doesn't punch particularly hard? And you think Tua, the Tua who faced Ike, wouldn't land his left hook? Come on! Get real. Holmes is as vulnerable a champion as you'll find with as many defenses as he had. He couldn't even beat Micheal Spinks!!! But the best heavyweights in the last 15 years don't have a chance. Hah!
Holmes, like many champions i the 80s, does get overrated to a degree on fightbeat's "Mythical Matchups"...however you have gone to the other extreme and just being ridiculous. As I said..I highly doubly Tua would have beaten the 42 year old Holmes that outboxed Ray Mercer...let alone a prime Holmes.
Holmes over Lewis Decision Holmes over Tua UD 12-0 Holmes over Ibeabuchi Decision Holmes over Vitaly Decision 9-3 Holmes over Wladimir by KO 8 and i do have my doubts about Holmes vs. Frazier...because of the success Frazier had vs. Ali. Ali was much faster and more illusive but Holmes put more on his punches. Could Holmes take the punishment from Frazier's hooks? Can Frazier withstand Holmes jabs and right hands long enough to make it to the later rounds..?
you're an idiot. and full of assumptions. i watched many of Holme's fights - live. which is why i know better than to think he would've beaten all of the best heavyweights from the last 15 years. if you weren't so sentimental you wouldn't get all bitchy and angry just because you don't agree with me.
I do agree that Holmes is a tad overrated compared to his successors (broadwayjoe and plenty of others see this the other way, that I overrate Klitschkos. Lewis, Bowe etc. but IMHO that's what opinion's are worth). But you have to look at the styles here. Wlad is indeed better than Witherspoon and could at least hold his own agaist Holmes in a boxing match, but he is clearly more vulnerable than Timmy was and thus it is very likely that Holmes would hurt him at some point. And the Tua that fought Ike is the Tua that was outboxed for long parts against David Izon, Oleg Maskaev and Jeff Wooden. He never was as good as his highlight reel (neither was Golota) and that indeed is a horrible stylistic matchup. You must see this
So you won't be addressing my question regarding Vitali then? The fact that he's robotic doesn't mean he cannot beat Holmes. How exactly does robotic, in Vitali's case, mean he can't beat Holmes?
Holmes vs Frazier would have been a good fight. Pick'em Both men get dropped IMO. Close decision one way or another. I think Frazier edges it.
The Klitchskos and Lewis are difficult to predict because these guys are so gigantic... its just difficult to picture it... Holmes could sleepwalk to a decision over Tua... Frazier beats Holmes IMO... and what the fuck is Sly talking about? What does Norton vs. Holmes have to do with Frazier vs. Holmes??? NOTHING in common stylistically... horrible point to make
I think Holmes is pretty much on even ground with the Ali who Frazier bested (very narrowly, on my scorecard) in 1971. I had that fight 8-7, with Frazier only up by two at the end (dead-even going into the final round, though the momentum at that point was well & truly with the champ). I think Holmes has a close-to-50% shot at beating Frazier, & I don't think either man would be floored multiple times. Maybe a knockdown or two either way, but ultimately I think Frazier stops Holmes on his stool sometime during the championship rounds, with the cards near-even. I would not be shocked if Holmes won.
