i just posted this in the mma forum, but it belongs here too http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Report-UFC-Signs-Boxer-Toney-22992 i really dont think this is a good move for boxing.
Toney'll get his shins kicked out his legs then tapped out in about 45 seconds. Pointless waste of time.
I talked to Sam Peter once and he said the thing about Toney that no one knows is his strength. He said it really amazed him how strong this guy was seeing how he had moved up in weight. That should help him a bit against those brutes in MMA. Also Toney will most likely get on the George St-Pierre roid stack so that should help him out too.
If any boxer on earth is LEAST likely to give MMA training the respect it would need to be given for a non-disasterous cross over, it's lazy baws Toney.
If Toney had any form of mobility left he might have a decent shot of getting "somewhere". Fighting in the pocket against wrestlers or strikers that can use leg kicks will be a nightmare.
this is bullshit. toney will either get badly beaten. or any easy fight or two to boost his confidence, than get put in with a real bad mother and get whipped. he is 80 LBS above his best weight. a defensive boxer anyways. 17 years out of his prime. with no wrestling knowledge to speak of? what kind of point is dana making? and if he wanted to make this point why not have cintron vs sherk?
Awww you shouldn't worry now, you can ease up and relax, Velasquez may become the UFC heavyweight champ,.. Silva is dark,.. and Penn aint a whitey so,.. you can calm down now,.. :crafty: ...I know how much you were concerned.
His style is also awful for MMA like winner by choke said. Mayorga has a much better shot of doing something if only because he'll go forward swinging aggressively like the nutter he is. This whole episode is gonna be a cringe.
I bet it's more along the lines of Toney's been such an obnoxious prick for so long, showing up at his house etc, he just wants him put in his place.
Toney's got some ego on him, he thinks he's gonna show up after training three days and knock Lesnar cold
Best thing that can come out of this is White matches him against somebody good who likes to stand, like Forrest Griffith who stands with him for long enough for it not to be totally embarrassing, keeps the leg kicks to a minimum, takes him down after a couple of minutes and taps him. That's the least embarrassing scenario for Toney and the sport of boxing I can imagine coming out of this. I wonder if Toney's even sparred a round of MMA in his life before he embarked on this folly.
Toney followed Dana White around and practically begged for a shot in the UFC. Dana didn't even want Toney.
I'd guess he'd get over 1 million if he was paid fairly and since it's the UFC he'll make $50,000 + a possible $5,000 win bonus.
