So let's list fighters who looked good or great when they faced solid opponents but whose level of fighting dropped dramatically against the very best. So no examples like Larry Holmes or Lennox Lewis who didn't have a chance to meet great opponents in their prime, but fighters who could and failed. Two examples:

    Felix Trinidad
    Prince Naseem Hamed

    Does Ricky Hatton count?

He had a struggle with a merely good fighter (Collazo), although he usually took care of the good but not great fighters. He beat Tszyu, but got knocked silly against the greats he fought that were much closer to their prime.

Disagree with both. Jones showed that he can do the same against a great opponent (Toney) and an opponent with great size advantage. Floyd has never been made look really bad

    I think he counts.

Tszyu, Castillo, Maussa, Mallinaggi and Urango dealt with well. Two brutal KTFO against the only truly elite fighters he ever faced.

I didn't read the opening post, just the title. I thought the thread was about fighter's who looked great against nongreat fighters regardless of how they did against great fighters.

Bullshit. You just wanted to clown on Roy and PBF and like usual, made yourself look dumb.

Huh? The whole premise of this thread is nonsense if you don't take fighters primes into account. EVERY fighter who doesn't retire undefeated appears to lose against "greats" sooner or later, thus putting their past resume in question.

Felix Trinidad lost all of one fight in his prime. ONE fight. and that was moving up 13 pounds from where his prime was to fight maybe the best fighter in any division at the time. Otherwise he was beating fighters considered "great" at the time about every few months.

Maybe someone like Zab Judah or Angel Manfreddy would fit this topic better, as they lost to pretty much every "great" fighter they came across, even while still in their primes. But against average/good comp, they looked unbeatable. I am sure there are many other legit examples of this.

None of those guys level of fighting "dropped dramatically" when facing elite opponents.

Felix Trinidad is a much better example.

Another name i suppose that could be considered is Arturo Gatti. Although in his case nobody expected him to do very well let alone win.

Something a lot of people have forgotten....Hatton was nowhere near as fresh in 2007 as he was in 2005.

I hate to make excuses, but it's true.

And, by 2009, he was even further removed from it.

He did look alot better, and seemed to actually take a shot much better as a 23 year old,.. I thought seeing him in earlier fights that he would turn into a better fighter than he did,.. His insatiable skulling of booze, and blowing in and out of weight like a puffer-fish, combined with actually, jumping head-first into punches, wasn't really ever gunna make for a long career,.. so he turned into an 'exposed overrated white-hype' more or less.

Somebody called Jim Bagg who writes in the Anal-Ring magazine said that Hatton should be remembered as nothing more than a chinny mauler. It is no wonder boxing is fucked. Hatton a "chinny mauler"? Pathetic. Hatton was NEVER chinny until the jump to 147 and the constant boozing finally caught up with him.

Hatton often gets too much criticism nowadays IMO. It's like he's become a joke for the unspeakable crime of getting stopped by probably the two greatest fighters of the decade.

What are we, back at eastside and boxingscene? People always love to pull the xenophobia/anti-white conspiracies for Calzaghe and the Klitschkos (but less so for Hatton).

Well if that's the case please explain to me how in the opening post that I made, did I clown Roy and PBF? Sounds to me like what I wrote was giving them props. Perhaps you're insinuating that I'm trying to say that PBF and Roy never looked good against any greats. I suppose that's possible but then it would also mean I was saying the same thing about Mosley and Trinidad which isn't likely. Sooo like I said, I never read the opening post and it was a mistake.

What I was trying to say in my opening post was actually a complement to both Roy and PBF, but some guys just see hate where there is none. Like I said and continue to say, there is a difference between hate and criticism. I don't hate Roy or PBF. Now if any of you gentlemen would like to apologize to me I'll take that here or in a PM. Either one will do.

How do Jones and Myweather fit into this topic? Mayweather hasn't lost a fight in his whole career. And as for Jones, outside of that DQ loss in a fight he was winning, he didn't lose a fight he was 35 years old and also owns a one-sided win over James Toney who was considered one of the very best fighters in the world at that time..

The title mislead me. I was responding to what fighters looked great against average opposition.

Just so there will be no more future confusion with what I wrote, I deleted my first post.

Uh uh uh :nono: 'pulling' maybe that way for some,.. like the way Fraud Mayweather drops it for example,.. but taking into account,..a huge variety of double standards,.. I do believe them being white and foreign, definately adds to the ruthless resentment they cop,..
