Just because webmd.com doesn't give you stats and how HGH can be used to unnaturally alter the bodies of professional fighters doesn't mean it has no helpful effect. There is a reason it is used by athletes. Also, if you are interested, you can find dozens of articles on how HGH has apparently improved athlete performance in almost every sport - although you will likely not get much in terms of "scientific" data since it might be hard to get people to participate in a study wherein the use of the drug being studied would cause them to get banned from their sport.

Now in Manny's case, understand that he could be on virtually ANYTHING, because he is NEVER adequately tested. For his last fight in Texas NO TESTING AT ALL was done. He could have been on cocaine and morphine all fight and he would have nothing to worry about in terms of being caught. So combinations of drugs are a distinct possibility. Of course that is speculation.... but then again, how would we ever know?

What irks me to no end about the situation in boxing is that it is simply a repeat of other disastrous and embarrassing naive policies of the past. Remember Tony Mandarich? There was a time when little or no testing was done in college football, and so average players became gods until they got to the NFL and off the juice. So many great baseball records of the past are down the shitter, not because someone better came along, but because someone inferior with tons of dope came along. That will never be repaired IMO, as far as baseball is concerned. A chunk of the sport and its legacy is lost forever due to a refusal to properly test athletes.

Is this really what we fans want for boxing? To have our own Tony Mandarich or Mark McGwire or Lyle Alzado? Guys who give the sport the middle finger and juice day and night for years so they can accomplish things they could never otherwise accomplish, break records, and become hall of famers... and in the process take a shit on the sport? Once the damage is done to the sport, and to its fighters whose lives and careers and legacies are permanently damaged by a cheat crushing them, it's too fucking late. Why do we have to wait for that one guy with no conscience and an insatiable, reckless desire to win at all costs to come along and fuck everything up before we do something about it? Why is it always the huge, high-profile, disturbing scandal that finally motivates those in charge to clean the sport up?

How about for once we avoid the scandal and stop these guys in their tracks before they do even more damage? Change the rules in Nevada for starters and then set up PBF/Pac there. Do it now, and let the chips fall where they may. If that ain't gonna happen, then unfortunately it's up to guys like Floyd Mayweather (and it pains me to say it) to write this shit in their fight contracts since the commissions don't give fuck who cheats and who gets hurt. Worst of all, if nothing is done then Pac sends a message to all the other fighters out there - pack as many chems as you can into that body and become a hero, because the commissions don't care, your adoring fans will give you a pass, and you won't get caught, even if you're the most popular fighter in the sport.

The problem with guys taking drugs is that they believe the other guy is taking them. Even if the other guy isn't. So there is this burning need to "level the playing field" all the time....even where that need is a fiction, a fantasy in the mind of the would-be juicer. You see, Carl Lewis was juicing. And Ben Johnson knew it. But Ben got caught, and Carl didn't.
