Roy would have toyed with Hopkins if they fought 10 years ago instead of last night

Even last nighT Roy had enough to fluster Hopkins and he was beating Hopkins fighting inside. No way Hopkins beats a Roy that is not shot.

Yea prime Jones would always beat B-Hop. It was sad seeing someone who used to be so good reduced to that shite.

Last Night, REED was Talking w/Bigdawg about Roy's Level of DECLINE & REED Wondered Aloud if Roy Actually WATCHES his Own Fights these Days???...SURELY, if he Compared his Footage of the Last 7 Years to his Late 90's/VERY EARLY 00's Shit, Roy would ALSO NOTICE the Difference & Call an End to this CHARADE...

Moreso, Alton Merkerson & the Rest of Roy's Camp Should B ASHAMED of themselves for FREELOADING Off of & ENABLING Roy to Carry On w/this Nonsense...If they GAVE a Fuck about Roy, they'd have told him to RETIRE Looooooooong Ago &/or DECLINED to B Part of his Corner Anymore....

This fight shows that the 2002 matchup would have had Hopkins beaten down badly. Roy was begging to be knocked out by keeping his hands so far down, even more than he has in the past.

Hopkins could not hurt Jones, Hopkins only scored by charging forward and landing punches, he would not be able to do that if Roy had his legs still, Hopkins lost in the clinch. Jones would have toyed with Hopkins 10 years ago. Roy would not even throw punches last night, but when he did and landed it bothered Hopkins.

it's clear that the speedy multi-dimensional style of jones' would've been always troublesome for hopkins. even in spurts, roy looked like he could've won more rounds had he actually threw some damn punches.

Hopkins is 45. He looked like garbage against Ornelas. People act like Roy is the only one in decline. Hopkins was coming on in the first fight, so who knows what would have happened. Not like it was a blowout and every fighter probably needs some time to adjust to Roy´s extraordinary speed. It´s all speculation unfortunately.

i agree that hopkins has looked like shit in his last two fights. he's going to lose the next time he faces a top 5 guy from 168-200.

hopefully, he'll call it quits, but i'm thinking that he wants to cash out vs. haye.

Considering Roy barely threw any punches that isn't surprising.

I think Roy would have beaten Hop around the time they were talking about fighting (early 00's I think). What matters is what did happen.

It was atrocious (I can't remember ever turning off a fight before). Both should retire. It's over and has been for quite some time.

there was a point in the fight that Roy was taking it to Hopkins, and Bernard didn't liked it. Hops can't deal with speed. That's why he's chosen slow opponents like tarver and pavlik to look like a million dollars. Calzaghe was living proof of that.

i thought hopkins looked a bit shaky in the early going and yea, he was more active in terms of punch rate because he was fighting against a punching bag who was a somewhat decent jr. middle/mediocre middleweight at best.

Damn. Roy looks nearly solid in spots against a 45 year old man and that proves he would have toyed with him ten years ago.

he didnt exactly 'toy' w/ him the first time and i highly doubt that jones would've had an easy time had they fought in early 2000s. hopkins is a nightmare for any fighter w/ any style.

Absolutely, it does make you wonder. It's too kind to even call him a "shell" of himself anymore, he just doesn't throw anything. I think as you mentioned in a previous thread, that Roy tries to fight like a prime RJJ despite being so past it. Sad to see, and yea anyone who puts the idea in his head that he's still got it or can do anything in boxing anymore should be ashamed.

thing is, when RJJ does throw (which isn't often enough), he's still quick as hell. i think RJJ's biggest problem is mental, and he's not ever going to recover. i think if he had his confidence, he could still be effective.

This fight should never have been agreed.
Jones never had a chance of winning this fight, especially after watching him get KO'd by Green you knew it, he was finished. He thought he could have one last night where he would turn it on, but, it was never going to happen.

Yes if this fight had happened 10 years ago, Jones would be a big favourite.
It was a huge shame for many fans to see this Jones in the ring. Hopkins clearly deserved the win.

Jones would never "toy" with a prime Hopkins, but he would beat him sure. But so what...Jones would have beaten hagler, hearns and Leonard as well. Jones was a Michael Jordan type phenomenon.

    Well.....

Had Jones not fought a prime and undefeated JAMES TONEY who had previously stopped Michael Nunn, Iran Barkley, "Prince" Charles Williams and beaten Mike McCallum....you may have a point in regards to Jones possibly running from the likes of hagler.

However..since Toney is in the same league as Marvelous Marvin and consequently Leonard and Hearns....you have NO POINT.

Ah. So Jones gets credit for wins over Nunn, Barkley, Williams and a non-geriatric McCallum? All in 12 rounds? Wow! No wonder RJJ made that fight.

Nah...Jones gets credit for fighting undefeated james Toney who was considered by many people as P4p #1 at that time.

    So?

Hopkins beat Tito, who was considered P4P no.1 by many people.

Roy Jones never fought a highly skilled puncher or pressure fighter in his prime. First he fought he was left in the dust like a pile of shit. Hearns and Hagler would have buried him alive. And since Sugar Ray Leonard beat both he´d beat Jones as well. :hammert:
