1. Now that he is no longer the champion at 155, does BJ Penn stay in the division and look for a rematch against Edgar, or does he move up in weight and hope for another shot at GSP? 2. What's next for Anderson Silva? Who should get the next shot at his title? Should his next fight be at 205? And after his latest non effort, are his days of being a PPV Main Eventer over, in spite of his P4P Ranking? 3. With back to back wins against Serra and Gracie, what's next for Matt Hughes? 4. Mark Munoz is now 3-0 since dropping down to middleweight. Is he legit, or is he just beating up on the division bottom feeders? TFK
great questions, TFK. 1. rematch. we have to see it. too much controversy over the first decision. 2. Belfort and Sonnen. He won't be able to run with either guy. He will still be a main eventer. The UFC has put waaaaay to much money in him. If he goes through both guys, give him Rua at 205. 3. Hughes is still a top level WW. Is he on the decline, yes, but he still beats many of them in the division right now. He's a decent gatekeeper right now. Let him fight Sanchez. 4. I like Munoz. Lets see him fight Rivera or even Bisping. I am not sure if he is legit at 185 but a win over Grove is decent.
1) I thought Penn won the fight or deserved a draw at the very least. So in my mind, he has to stay at 155 for a rematch. Penn looked soft. I think he took Edgar a little lightly. 2) Sonnen should be next for Silva. It's a match-up versus a good wrestler which solves Silva's safety-first approach. It won't be boring. 3) Hughes was stunned badly by a Gracie left hook in the first round. I think he is far more shot than people think. I say a few more nostalgia-type fights and then retirement. 4) I still can't lose the image of Munoz almost dead on the canvas after that Matt Hamill head kick. I think he is a tough dude but way too reckless on his feet still. Let's not forget that Grove, who is not a big puncher, dropped Munoz with an uppercut. Hopefully he will improve and middleweight is the right place for him. I would love to see his wrestling skill and toughness in the ring with GSP someday.
BJ should and is going to rematch for the belt. I also a think another fight with GSP would be redundant at this point. Chael Sonnen or Vitor Belfort and no, of course not. Retirement hopefully. He's pretty good, but won't be a force in the division.
1. As Looooooooong as GSP is Holding the 170 lb Title, BJ Is WASTING his Time by Vying for that Belt... 2. There's SOMETHING Going On w/Silva, Mentally...REED Can't Put his Finger On it, but it's OBVIOUSLY Affecting him as a Fighter...He's Clearly NOT Challenged @ 185 Anymore & REED Thinks it's in the BEST Interests of the UFC to FORCE Silva to Move up PERMANENTLY to 205 & VACATE the Middleweight Title...Silva's Last 3 185 Bouts have Been DREADFUL & Have Been BAD for Business... 3. All Matt Hughes is Proving is that he's Capable of Beaint OLD GUARD MMAists....Pitbull Alves would WAX him Again...Jon Fitch Does Likewise...Serra's a "Name", but No More than that... REED:kidcool:
I'm telling you. Anderson is PISSED at the UFC for not letting him box Roy Jones. That's when all this bullsh*t started. It's when he began clowning around and making a mockery of MMA.
BJ wont he fight IMO. I thought he clearly got the better of what little exchanges happened. They should fight again ASAP. Silva is a piece of shit, keep his stupid ass on undercards, we pay you to fight not fuckign dance and not to disrespect the sport. Matt Hughes is still a good fighter, he's not winning the title but he still has some fight left in him. Hallman? Munoz is what he is, a good wrestler with some good GNP. His striking sucks and I can't see him beating anyone near the top at 185.
-Penn stays at 155 and beats edgar -Anderson moves up to Heavyweight and Fights Mir -I dont care what Matt Hughes does -Munoz is legit, but he will get beat soon.
1. Early word has Edgar making his first defense against Gray Maynard. That would mean BJ would have another fight before getting a title shot. I think right now it's 50\50 whether he moves up in weight. If he stays at 155 and takes a fight other then Edgar, I'd like to see him face Tyson Griffin. 2. How about Anderson Silva vs James Toney at 205? It may not be boxing Roy Jones, but it's close. 3. I think Hughes is done as the sport seems to be passing him by, and he doesn't seem to have any interest in fighting any up and comers. He'll fight again, but I don't think it'll be anytime soon, unless they can dig up a name for him that is a winnable fight for him, like the Serra and Gracie fights were. 4. I think it's still too early to call Munoz legit, but I'd like to see him step up his competition. TFK
you are probably right, Hughes won't want to take a post as gatekeeper, his ego would never allow it. Look for Hughes/Rutten at UFC 130 :bangh: The only way I want to see Penn at 170 is if GSP is at 185. otherwise it is at no interest to me. If they give Maynard a shot before Penn gets a rematch it is all just marketing. Trying to build up other lw's besides Penn. I think that's the consensus pretty much about Munoz. Let him fight Bisping. I'd love to see Bisping lose to pretty much a no one.
1:BJ screwed up by losing. What a disappointment. I think it tarnishes his legacy unless he turns out to be a shot fighter. BJ was supposed to go to 170 but since he can't handle Edgar, then he shouldn't even think about it. 2:Anderson Silva should move up to 205 and fight a top 10 fighter there. There is nothing left at 185 for him, and no Sonnen doesn't count. 3:Matt Hughes should fight a top 5 welterweight. If he wins and St.Pierre moves up, I'd support him getting a title shot. 4:Munoz was on his way out in that fight but he gutted it out. I think Munoz can be in the top 10 at 185 and get a few wins but don't see him doing anything major in the UFC.
I was reading at mma junkie that it looks like Penn will get a rematch while maynard/florian will be made for the #1 contender spot
http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Edgar-Penn-Rematch-in-Works-for-Late-Summer-Fall-23856 A rematch of last Saturday’s UFC 112 lightweight championship tilt between Frankie Edgar and B.J. Penn is looking likely for late summer or fall. Representatives in both fighters’ camps told Sherdog.com on Tuesday that UFC officials have approached both sides to lock down a second bout between the lightweight fighters. No date or venue has been solidified yet. Edgar earned a unanimous decision over Penn at UFC 112 on April 10 in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., to become the promotion’s lightweight champion. Edgar’s victory, which delivered Penn his first loss in the 155-pound division since 2002, did not come without controversy. Both the media and fans were split on the bout’s outcome, as the 28-year-old New Jersey fighter was awarded 50-45, 48-47 and 49-46 scores in a tight contest some thought Penn had won. Edgar told the Sherdog Radio Network’s “It’s Time†show host Bruce Buffer on Tuesday that he’d agree to the rematch. “If anybody’s earned a rematch, it’s B.J.,†said Edgar. “He’s a legend at 155. I’m ready for it if that’s definitely going to happen. I’m the champion. I don’t get to pick who I fight; they tell me who I fight.†Edgar, who trains under UFC middleweight Ricardo Almeida and others in the tri-state area, said he’d watched the fight on Monday and had given himself three rounds. Edgar said he felt the first round could have gone to him as well. “It was definitely was a close fight, but I truly do feel I won,†said Edgar, “There’s going to be people that think one way and people that think the other, but all three judges felt I won.†Sherdog.com has learned that two dates are being considered for the championship bout -- Aug. 28 at the TD Garden in Boston or Aug. 7, possibly in New Jersey. “Honestly, I’d like a little bit more time,†Edgar said of an August rematch. “My wife’s due (with a second son) in mid to late June. And again, I want to improve, I want be different every fight. I want to be ready. I know if I get a rematch, B.J.’s going to be coming better than ever, so I want to be able to make sure that I can too, for me and the fans.â€
1.Rematch. If he destroys Edgar and proves that was just an off night ala Rahman Lewis 1 then move onto 170 pounders. 2.GSP. People want it. If not GSP then move him to 205. The only fight left at 185 for him is Vitor. And if they do in fact match him up with Vitor do not make that a headliner cuz with Anderson you never know. Make it a co mainevent. That way a good main event can make up for it if Anderson stinks up the joint AGAIN. 3.Hughes should fight a top 5 welterweight. If he wins that match him up with Dan Hardy 4.Don't even know who he is
I thought Joe Rogan said at ufc 112 that if Anderson won he would fight GSP at a catch weight... ?? Is GSP that small ? or is that a bitch move on his behalf, an attempt to weaken Silva ?
Anderson Silva in many ways is the Roy Jones of MMA. Toney in his prime couldn't handle Roy in boxing, so he'd get the same treatment fighting in the cage against Anderson.
Well, there's 15 pounds difference between the weight classes. But even more importantly is that Silva is a huge 185 pounder. He cuts weight to fight at 205. GSP cuts down to 170 also, but he is smaller. On top of that, I think it was Silva's idea to go down.
REED Hates to Say it, but There's VALIDITY to it...Both Silva AND GSP Remind REED of Roy Jones...ULTRA-Talented Guys, Basically UNfuckingTOUCHABLE, yet Now they're Beginning to BORE Fight Watchers w/their Dominance & "Do-Just-Enough-to-WIN" Attitudes... The BIGGEST Criticism of PRIME Roy Jones was the Fact that he'd ALLOW Guys to Go the Distance w/Him, Even when they had NOfuckingBUSINESS Doing So (Reggie Johnson, Mike McCallum, etc.) REED:hammert:
Yeah I watched the fight and scored it 4-1 for Penn. I still think BJ should have stopped him or submitted him within 2 rounds. He didn't handle Edgar like he should have.
GSP should move out of his comfort zone for this fight, maybe 180??. You have to admire guys like Silva and BJ for testing themselves against bigger opponents - I would like to see GSP do the same.
