The Bad Lieuetenant- The new one with Nicolas Cage. Good movie, Cage's best work in years. Great dark humour.

Get Carter- The original with Michael Caine. Good revenge movie, good ending.

it's not a remake, it has a different story altogether. Cage did a great job, check it out, it's pretty funny.

I'd go the other way. I was drawn to District-9's originality & execution, while Shutter Island's, "twist" is old-hat in Hollywood, nowadays. Saw it coming a mile off.

I think I had this discussion on bf. Did you consider that you were meant to see the "twist"?

yeh with Shutter Island they were hinting about the twist throughout the movie......like putting hints about it so that you lean towards it, and then they do something else and lean you the other way

with district 9 i just dont like the way alot of it was shot through a news ir documentary perspective with interviews and shit...then suddenly drop the documentary idea at times

I agree on all counts. I knew what would happen in Shutter Island before I went, went anyway and wasted the price of admission. I have no one to blame but myself but I did hope I would be proven wrong.

I loved District 9. I thought it was well done. I know the documentary parts threw people off but I thought it added a different take. I'm glad they didn't do it for the entire movie but instead used it just enough.

    Robinson Crusoe:

7/10---pretty good movie I ran a cross through Netflix. Crusoe making Friday a slave was pretty crappy to watch. Robinson Crusoe was well acted by Brosnan(who I don't really care for). It's worth a viewing.

Year One. I didn't expect much going in, & the worst parts lived up (down) to the base-humour I was expecting. There were, however, a handful of worthy moments. You wouldn't watch it twice, but I've certainly seen worse.

Didn't like the additions of the comic book frames and the removal of the final beach walk scene in the Ultimate Directors Cut DVD.

Poor Form to dick around so much with a classic. The arrival of the Baseball Furies in particular was spoilt by the additions.

I havent watched the director's cut DVD version. I won't be now. Thanks for the heads up.

They ruined Apocalypse Now by adding stupid scenes in the Redux version. I don't believe either of the directors (Warriors/Apocalypse Now) wanted to add anything but had to because they were doing a re-release.

    That's why re-releases are stupid.:bangh:

It is a shame because the actual footage has been cleaned up quite well. Sadly, Hill says on the special features that this is exactly the way he wanted to make the original.

Do watch it though. Picture quality is great and the sound much improved. Special features are excellent also.

I'll check it out. If that's what Hill said, then I'm glad the studio stepped in.:shit:

As for the "sequel", it's going to bomb.I've been watching IMDB for a while now. I hadn't checked it in a few months but I am disturbed that they actually have "stars" attached to it. Before, it was just in the developmental BS stage.

Have you seen the movie "The Purifiers"? It's a piece of shit but it was supposed to be the Warriors remake at one point. They definitely borrowed from the story. I couldn't even get through the first 20 minutes.

The Count of Monte Cristo---9/10---I haven't seen the original or read the book but I thought this movie was fantastic. Hell, it even made Luis Guzman look like a real actor instead of just a comic relief sidekick. A great story fueled on revenge.Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce were great.

    Shutter Island - 4 out of 10

I am marking this extremely harshly. This is not a good film, though it certainly tries hard to be. I won't get into spoilers but if you think you know the way this film ends, you're probably right.

Terrible editing. A monotonous score and a very generic story that takes a LONG time to get to the climax. Dicaprio is good although his accent is terrible in places. They try for to set a creepy feel with a general undertone of dread but never really get there.

    I wouldn't watch it again.

Are you supposed to see it coming from the trailer? How about from finding out it's set in a mental institution? If you're supposed to see it coming then why bother watching? It's not an interesting ride to get there.

The film is never as clever as it tries to be.

    Maybe.

It must be difficult to try and pull off a twist ending these days. Maybe that explains why M Night Shymalan disappeared so quickly.

I knew the ending from the trailer. I went because I read all kinds of positive reviews and heard about a "twist ending", so I went, thinking that maybe the ending was different. I soon realized how dumb people are for hyping this predictable piece of crap movie.

No it's not. If you want a pretty decent Sci Fi flick check out Sunshine. It's good up until the ending where it gets a bit dumb.

    7 out of 10.

This film gets alot of flack, mainly because of the lack of a twist ending. Shymalan had two huge hits back to back in The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable both with twists and I remember people being disappointed with this film as it didn't have a 'strong' twist.

Many also had a complaint about one particular item in this film which I can't post without spoiling this film. All I will say to that is it is addressed in the film and people who have that complaint must have missed the explanation.

It is a shame because this is great film. The dread is built almost purely through implication rather than showing everything on screen. Gibson delivers a strong performance and the use of flashbacks is very effective as Shymalan is known for. There is no 'twist' in the end as such, more of a revelation. I quite like it.

    I don't own this film. I should. It's a good one.
