As hardcore boxing fans is 2010, it's our duty to hold Valero in the proper perspective for future fans.

It's inevitable... at the time of his death, he was 27-0 with 27 KOs and a two-time world champion. New fans are going to come along... they're going to want to know how good this guy was, they're going to want to know how he stacks up against the greats.

So lets lay it down right now. How good was Edwin Valero? I'll start...

He was a knockout machine with overall questionable opposition and questionable technique. No one thought he was invincible, but he would have been given a solid shot of beating anyone around his weight class.

His best moment was probably his infamous sparring with Erik Morales, years before he died.

He was NOT, at any point, considered without question the best fighter in any weight class.

Who can add to this? It's up to us. He's a part of our era.

How will the people who lived though his career remember Edwin Valero?

I was a Valero sceptic up until his last fight, but he showed nouse vs DeMarco that wasn't evident in his career up to that point. He was never really extended so it makes it hard to guage exactly how good he could've been, but easy to go over the top with it.

valero was a very good fighter who not only knocked guys out, but hardly lost rounds.

he's still a question mark w/o any wins over a top notch fighter, but i think his talent was without a doubt, something that won't come by in a long time.

G.O.A.T. Would've went down as the best ever, besides Mayweather.

at the time of his death, i don't think there was a lightweight who would've beaten him. at 140, it would've been interesting to see how he would've fared against guys like bradley, khan and maidana.

Two fisted power, very aggressive and entertaining to watch. Gym reputation almost as glossy as his 27-0 record according to some sources.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Relied a lot on his power although did possess underrated boxing skills. Could overwhelm most opponents with superior fire power and speed. Almost all of them were considered over matched before the fight started however. Questionable as to how he would have faired not just with superior opposition, but with a big puncher given his tendency to leave himself open.

Would have been favored over most fighters from between 130-135 at the time of his demise.

Should go without saying potential was never realized.

I would have (and did) favor him big over Khan.

I think he probably decisions Maidana but loses to Bradley.

All 3 would have been greatly entertaining either way.

In 20 years, when I tell people he wasn't even favored to beat Tim Bradley, I want some of you to have my back.

Well, Steve_Dave..........he DOESN'T stack up against any of the greats.

Salvador Sanchez fought a bunch of World Class fighters by the time he was 23.

IBeatahoochie beat some quality guys in their absolute prime before he got sent away.

    Valero was a titleholder.........not a champion. :nono:

Maybe the Tony Ayala Jr. comparison is valid, because he never fought anybody decent either.

He was 28 and Antonio DeMarco was his most well known opponent. Maybe some of those Japanese guys he fought were better, I don't know.

I wasn't as impressed as most others seemed to be by the DeMarco fight.

Knockouts are fun, but these type of guys never seem to be cracked up to be what we all hoped for them once they step up. Remember Joel Julio just before he got exposed against Quintana not very long ago?

There was a guy in the 40's named Billy Fox who had 48 wins and 47 Knockouts. Jake Lamotta even laid down on the canvas against him to try and secure a title shot against one of the mobs fighters.

He lost everytime he stepped up against somebody decent who fought back.

I won't even give him the respect of "having a chance" against anybody decent.

    Fuck him!! :flip:

What a sad state boxing is in right now. I wish Valero would still be alive he would have wiped the floor with everybody in the p4p list.

Knocked out by one of the hardest punchers in the game in these weight classes, while being drunk and probably not very defense-minded. That's a shock!

I mean if that doesn't prove anything nothing will...

I never really rated the guy that highly, very crude, I would have picked the current Marquez to beat him comfortably.

I honestly feel his name will be largely forgotten. He certainly won't be remembered on any all-time lightweight champ lists.

If someone he beat went on to become an all-time great, maybe his legacy could've piggy-backed on theirs. But he didn't. He won two paper titles and never beat anyone of note. Killing his wife and himself is his legacy.

If he's mentioned at all, it'll be "Who was that boxer with the knockouts who killed his wife and then hung himself?"

It won't merit anything more than that.

Stay Dubble, stay,.. we fought under the oppresion of the old man moderator, the old ghost who stalked the forums and changed thread titles to something he deemed 'more appropriate',.. you helped defeat Joe Rein, the old bastard, and as a result, you are like a war veteran/hero for Fightbeat,..but barely do you reside in the country you helped mould into a democracy in this present day,....... :crying:
