Well the thing about Couture is that he doesn't shoot in for the legs. He closes distance and tries to get your whole body and push you back into the fence and then, if he's capable, lift you up and slam you down. That's what Toney has to look out for. Toney needs space to throw his hands and Couture's game is to close space to manipulate Toney on the fence and ultimately, the ground.
But I wouldn't be surprised if Couture tries something different seeing that it's unlikely he'll have any respect for Toney's ground game(or lack of).

Not really. Because Toney is a boxer and that means he's already dangerous in any sport that involves any form of striking. And striking is one of the most important talents to have in MMA. Which fighter is successful today without good hands? There isn't one.
Brock, Fedor, Cain, Carwin, Dos Santos, Anderson, GSP, etc....they all have fast and/or powerful hands. It's a requirement. You need boxing to be successful in MMA today. Which means Toney needs to be respected for that alone.

I just hope it's not a bullshit stoppage. Whenever a loud mouthed shit talkers fight I want to see either a clean KO or to see them tap. So there is no bullshit excuses afterwards

The thing is, Toney is a defensive-minded pocket fighter. Not the best style for MMA. The badly eroded reflexes and mounds of fat don't help matters.

He's going to get taken to the mat.

I think this is gonna be Sylvia\Mercer in reverse.

When Big Tim fought Mercer, he didn't think Mercer had any chance of winning. He came in to the fight fat, unprepared and disinterested, thinking he would just impose his will on Mercer and that would be that. So he pretty much stood there giving Mercer no respect and allowed Mercer to take advantage of his only opportunity to win the fight, and that was by throwing and landing a bomb. Mercer swung and connected, and Tim became the laughingstock of both the MMA and boxing worlds.

Toney seems to not be giving Couture any respect, and for some reason seems to think that he's a power puncher like Mercer, which he isn't even close to being. It seems like Toney honestly believes there's no way Couture will ever take him down or tie him up and push him against the fence and do the dirty boxing that made Couture so succesful. Toney believes all he has to do is land one punch and the fight will be over.

If he truly believes that, it's gonna be a short night for Mr. Toney, as he will get taken down and either pounded out or submitted very quickly. Couture may be way past it, but he's no dummy, and he's not gonna just sit there and allow Toney to tee off on him. I'm sure he is not gonna want to embarrass the sport of MMA, and will probably be as up for this fight as any in his career.

It'll be interesting to see if Mayorga gets choked out or submitted this weekend by Din Thomas, if Toney starts to have second thoughs about this fight.

Do you think Couture has the chin to withstand a square shot from the 4 ounce gloved fist of Toney? This is taking into account that Couture was dropped from a Noguira punch who is not a reputable powerpuncher.

Couture doesn't have the most rock solid chin, but do you really think Toney punches harder then the rest of the UFC heavyweights? Toney is far from a power puncher, and whatever punching power he had, he sure didn't bring it up to heavyweight with him.

I'm not sure about Toney's punching power but I think his accuracy or ability to find an opening over an unsuspecting Couture might make the punch that much more effective. It's the shot you don't see coming that hurts you after all. I've seen Vitali take shots flush from big Lennox and still charge forward. And I saw Vitali take a bodyshot from little Chris Byrd and back away.
So who really is to say if Toney's lack of punching power makes him any less of a threat than say a bigger puncher out there? Hard to say. So many variables. And the 4 ounce glove mixed with Couture's questionable chin should make matters interesting to say the least.

    Randy Couture talks James Toney!

"I'll stand with him long enough to put him where I need to put him!"

He hit hard enough to keep them honest, which should be good enough with 4 oz gloves.

I like Couture, don't particularly care for Toney, but I love boxing. Toney via TKO.

Well, the good thing for Toney is that he's really getting an undersized HW. I thought Randy decided after the Nog fight to stay at 205.

Toney couldn't get a big name fighter that he has a better chance of beating. Seriously Couture is a legend but seriously diminished.

There is a part of me that hopes Toney wins so we get to see him again because if he loses to Couture there is nowhere else to go.

Unfortunately this becomes a very boring fight if Couture gets a take down because there is no way Toney gets back to his feet.

To me a Couture win is just a huge testimony to the advantage of wrestling in MMA.

If Toney wins, I can only see him doing a 'legends tour', meaning future fights would be against the likes of Chuck and Tito.

Don't kid yourselves guys. Randy is the master of game plans, and Toney isn't a difficult gameplan to come up with. Even at his old age, Randy will rape him.

Yeah, make no mistake about. Randy will pin him against the cage; wear his ass out; take him down and torture him on the ground.

Is there any word yet about at what weight this will be?...i'd imagine they'd make it at a catchweight much like they did with Kimbo. This fight doesn't have any title implications so they needn't have it at 205....215 perhaps.

Toney's been weighing in at around 230 in recent outings, however i was surprised to see that for his last fight, in september, he came in at 217 and a half...the lightest he's been since he fought Holyfield in his first heavyweight outing (he weighed 217 that night). So maybe Toney could get closer to 205

I'm not sure if a weight is required for what amounts to an "attraction" bout.

Nothing whatsover is on the line and even Randy admits it.

Toney can weigh in @ 205 or 315.

    I don't see it making a difference.

I don't think the UFC would be happy signing James Toney to a contract where he could potentially walk into the cage at 260lbs...picking up a payday and putting on a farce at the same time. If they do make this a straight-up heavyweight bout then they open themselves up to that embarrassing possibility
