I think both fights are very interesting in the fact that I don't think Din is going to withstand a flush shot from Mayorga nor do I think Randy's chin as of late will hold up if Toney is able to tag him. The obvious question every boxing fan has is, what happens if the boxers are taken down? I watched the Mayorga/Din press conference and based on that, Mayorga hasn't at all trained in grappling from what I heard. Furthermore, Din has said in interviews that he can't decide if he wants to box Mayorga or go for an immediate takedown. He said he wants it to be exciting for the fans and make some fireworks.
IMO Neither SHOULD have a shot in hell.. but if Din decides he wants to "box" a bit first.. he could get stretched.. same with Randy
He's actually a local from my area in Florida. He has a couple of gyms nearby. He is a well-traveled 33 year old with a serious Jiu-Jitsu background. The guy is as solid on the ground as you will find. He also had decent success in the UFC. It's hard to believe but he actually has wins over guys like Matt Serra, Jens Pulver, Clay Guida, Jeremy Stephens, and has fought BJ Penn, Kenny Florian and Josh Neer. Din has over 30 MMA fights and, even though he's obviously on the down side of his career, the guy still trains like a Spartan. It is really shocking that Mayorga couldn't find an easier opponent for his first MMA fight. Din is a vet that can get it done.
Yeah, that's what he says. He may even believe that bullshit but I sure don't. I guarantee when he gets in that fucking ring he's going to bitch up and go for the take down. So will Coutre. If the Koscheck-Daley fight taught me one thing it's fighter's will always go with their advantages and most prefer to wrestle and grapple over do stand up unless they're certain their stand up is superior to their opponents. Since this won't be the case in either fight I guaranfuckingtee Coutre and Din will shoot 10 seconds after the fight starts. Both Toney and Mayorga's debuts will be dramaless matches that won't tell you much about their MMA future because they're just going to get out wrestled in a boring humpfest of an affair.
It's not. It was a bad statement and I should have written it differently. I got no problem with people playing to their strengths, they just shouldn't try to bullshit me or themselves by saying they're going to do stand up when we both know they're not.
well said, it drives me absolutely nuts when Jake Shields says he has no problems standing and that he has been working on his stand up and is very confident in it and then goes out and immediately grabs a single leg. I don't mind you immediately getting the single leg, just don't try to sell us a load of shit. Kind of like Floyd saying he is gonna "destroy" this guy and so on. Just tell us you are gonna use your speed and technique, put on a boxing clinic and win.
I don't think it's selling 'us' a load of shit as much as it is trying to throw their opponants off. If someone says they're gonna go out and try and take the fight to the ground, their opponant will probably spend more time working on the ground game. But if they lie and say they're gonna fight standing up when they really intend to fight on the ground, they're playing mind games with their opponant and there's a chance they won't be as prepared. TFK
Well, let's go a little easy on Jake. He honestly did try to stand with Henderson and was almost put into a coma. At that point Shields was grabbing anything for a take down. But seriously, if your Daley or Mayorga or Toney and you actually believe that these opponents will stand and box, you are clinically delusional. A take down makes all 3 very easy fights. Why would Koscheck, Din Thomas or Couture consider any other strategy?
I don't think either is gonna win, but I voted for Mayorga because he at least has a puncher's chance, and his lunatic, wild swinging style might catch Din off guard. But I doubt it. TFK
If I was in Din's corner, he would go immediately into a leg sweep and tap him out with a heel hook in 30 seconds. The crowd will love it and Mayorga would be pissed. I honestly think Toney has the better shot. I think Randy is waaayy past it. If Toney hits him he's going to sleep.
I went Toney. He's a sharper counter puncher, i guess there's more chance of him catching Randy as he goes for a take down or even if he dared try is 'dirty boxing'. But really, i give both of them very little chance.
Most pro MMA fighters are smart enough to take the fight to the ground as soon as possible. It would look "macho" to stand, but basically amount to Mayorga giving free shots to Trinidad. Gain a bit of respect, but end up on the wrong side of a KO. The MMA fighters should both win big, but i'm interested to see if they can "easily" get the fight to the mat.
I think it will be very easy. Both have stated that they will win standing and won't even have to rely on a ground game.
Din Thomas will get Mayorga to the mat easily. Mayorga has barely even trained for the fight and treats Thomas as a joke.
The stand up is an integral part of MMA,.. we see a load of punch knockouts,.. I guess it's an IQ test for Couture and Din,.. do they want to stupidly attempt to 'prove somethin' ..by taking experienced boxers on with hand-strikes?.. It's not boxing in the Octagon, but the avenue is there however to make it a boxing match, the two boxers are coming in with the view that this will be a piece of cake,..therefore the MMA fighters should be obligated to show them why being a boxer, is only a 1 dimensional form of fighting.
I agree completely. that clip is badass, Floyd at his absolute best. seriously, you really can't get much better at the sweet science then right there in that clip.artie:
