The body shots Julian Jackson pounded Drayton with just before landing that epic left hook were BRUTAL. You could hear that shit from the next town.

Tyson murdered Ruddock to the body in the rematch.

That was my favorite Jackson fight, and one of the best calls ever of a fight by Gil Clancy.

I'll add Frazier-Quarry 1 in there, as those two kids were really letting 'em fly to the body.

I was about to make mention of Chavez against Rosario. Left hook to the ribs, right hand under the heart, left low, right low, left high, uppercut to the chest. Bing, bang, pow!

Just as brilliant a bodypuncher as there ever was, that Chavez.

Under-rated action fight, too. Too often forgotten. Tszyu's eye swelled more rapidly than any other fighter I think I've ever seen, period. It was astonishing. I think it was his right eye, from memory.

Tszyu had an ugly mouse under his eye but his eye was never in danger of closing, IMHO.

I didn't think so, either, but I don't know when I've seen an eye close like that, outside of a gym fight involving a few casual observers who've never really boxed. At that level, what happened that night was difficult to fathom. The whole fight was quite exciting, really. Tszyu went well with a body assault, but I came away feeling that he had just out-manned Hurtado. When the rangy Cuban sat down in the fifth, he seemed more dispirited than out-right injured. That may've been the last fight Tszyu ever had (going from memory, so I may or may not be right) where he was really confused, rocked, & forced to fight at a fast, brutal pace right up until Hatton, almost a decade later.

Mosley-Leija: I rarely see this mentioned, but the ref took a point away from Mosley for a shot that was clearly above the beltline. Watch close and you can see a bodypunch that ripples through Leija's torso and leave a fucking imprint visible to the camera.

Mosley was never better than as a Lightweight, IMO, even if fame only came to him as a 147lber. & above.

Incidentally, Leija called De La Hoya a bigger puncher than Mosley.

I was gonna list Mosley-Lejia. Shane butchered Jesse James to the body.

Also Locche-Fuji. Even though its better known as possibly THE best defensive display of all time, Locche also battered Fuji with hooks to the body.

That Mosley would've given the 135lb. Mayweather absolutely all he could handle.

Nonsense! It'd be the same fight. Shane was always a one dimensional speedy slugger. Floyd schools him everytime.

I think De La Hoya, Mayweather & Mosley, were they all fighting one another at their peaks (& I realise they don't quite align, on account of Mayweather being behind the pack) could've had a lasting round-robin with each beating & losing to one another. There's not terribly much to pick between the three, at their best, in & around 147lbs.

If they were all fighting as recently as the '80's, that scenario would've been a lot more likely, & perhaps even probable if they were '50's fighters or earlier. Boxing is a very different sport, nowadays. The set-up has changed quite dramatically.

    Corrales/Castillo I had a lot of good body-punching. Others:

Chavez/Taylor I (evidenced by blood in Taylor's urine following the fight)
    Gonzalez/Letterlough
    Pavlik/Miranda
All of Frazier's fights with Ali
    Pacquiao/MAB I
    Pacquiao/Morales II
    ODH/Mosley I

Oscar at lightweight was a really good/borderline great puncher. It was weird that Oscar could put away Leija that fast. Leija was no pussy.

I just remembered another fight that was great for body punches---Mosley vs. John-John Molina. Mosley sapped the life out of Molina, and when Molina got dirty, Mosley outdirtied him. At one point, Mosley was in close, lifted up his head, and used it to rub Molina's head in every which way but loose.

Mosley was a bad motherfucker at lightweight. :bears:

It's a shame he didn't have sterner competition, so we could've gauged him more accurately.

Man that was great work. Ray woods (Diego Corrales father) would teach us to punch down on the hip. It causes the leg to go dead like a funny bone feeling. Very ole school tecnique. Great Eddie Mu!!!!

I would say Castillo, but any natural 135lber was in deep against either one on size alone.

Castillo, I think. He was always having issues with the scales. Mosley was an amateur 140 and had no problem making 135. Whether Castillo was just trying to melt down too much or was ballooning up to much between bouts is left to conjecture, I guess.

I don't think it's correct to make the judgement based on how difficult it was for the fighter to make weight (or how easy).

The size of a fighter is just one factor in determining how well he will make weight.
