It never got more heated up on the boxing forums than for the anticipation of Lewis/Tyson. Granted Tyson was long past it, but his die-hards held onto hope that he'd get it done. Rabid fans of both were really going at it, neither side giving an inch.
Was there ever a better time to be a boxing fan than that period? SecondsOut was a war zone! :kidcool:
    Really miss those days!

That was my favourite time for sure on boxing forums, especially as Lewis won. Tito-Hopkins was good but I didn't have a real interest in either of them to be honest and always thought Tito was overrated, albeit exciting.

Pacquiao-Mayweather will probably surpass Lewis-Tyson if it gets signed however.

De La Hoya/Vargas was also that year. It was a fun time to be posting on forums, boxingtime.com especially.

Yeah, that was one of the best years for boxing I think. Every division had some action.

Wasn't this the same month as Barrera-Morales II?

So you not only had a record price of $55 for Lewis-Tyson but another $40 or so for that fight...truly a great month to pay to view.

I remember all the coverage boxing was getting on national tv. They were playing the Lewis/Tyson scuffle on every network, Tyson's death threats were getting air-time everywhere. It was madness.
It just seems to me, as big as the Floyd/Pacman fight might be, it won't have that same anticipation leading in. Maybe I guess because heavyweights are just more appealing to the casual fans. Plus Tyson was playing the madman character very well.

Yeah. There was Holyfield/Rahman, DLH/Vargas, Barrera/Morales II, Wlad/Mercer, Johnson/Ruiz, etc. Some of those fights were duds but boxing was thriving.

The fight still set records, but it did lose some momentum after the press conference debacle led to the fight Memphis of all places.

I remember that vividly on secondsout... no matter how many times the sane among us accurately predicted that it would be a totally one-sided fight, the true believers just couldn't deal with it

Yeah, interesting to think about Pacquiao fighting on the undercard of a year after he'd upset Ledwaba on a DLH undercard and seven months or so after he and Mayweather fought on the same card in San Francisco.

And of course the split sites for the fighters, the split crews for the television...and all the broadcast filler a night of mismatches can bring.

Yea that's right I remember that, wasn't it against that fella Julio? 2 round demolition, and Julio had gone the distance with Tapia just recently before. I was on the Pacwagon big time after the Ledwaba win and kept telling my mates to watch out for this guy, but no one gave a fuck

I remember most guys on the forum saying Barrera was going to wipe his ass with Pacquaio and called the fight a mismatch.

I'm not sure what you precisely had in mind with, "surpass" (be it PPV's, or significance, or what have you), but for the sheer magnitude of that event, I would say it is even bigger than Mayweather-Pacquiao will be, should that fight eventuate (Unlike some, I do not see it as an inevitability).

Don't misunderstand me, though. Mayweather-Pacquiao will probably do even better business (allowing for inflation), & is certainly an infinitely more relevant fight in sporting terms, but as the last truly great Heavyweights to date (IMO), Lewis & Tyson, in spite of only one of them being at or near his peak, was monumental, & unlike Mayweather-Pacquiao, this bout had literally years upon years of building, rivalry & bitterness pent up.

Lewis-Tyson marks one of just four occasions in my life I have seen fit to break a strict rule of mine --- never gamble, especially on Boxing --- but I could see virtually no way out for Tyson, & was fortunate to collect.

Sadly for yours truly, as an admirer of Barrera's, I am not proud to admit that I familiarised myself with Pacquiao with a handful of his bouts before their first clash. I came away thinking Barrera would have more trouble with this guy than many were expecting, but wouldn't seriously be threatened for his title. 7-5, perhaps 8-4. It was an annihilation.

My woeful estimation of Pacquiao tied in nicely to my anti-gambling ways that night, though

I agree. It might not have been for the right reasons, but I think it will stand as bigger than Mayweather-Pacquiao when history settles the dust.

With the possible exception of Barrera-Morales II, only Lewis-Tyson eclipsed this fight for that year. "Bad Blood" held my attention for weeks going in, as a De La Hoya supporter going back to his Olympic days. Early admiration for the gutsy & swift-to-develope Vargas had long since evaporated by this period, his frankly-juvenile hostilities toward De La Hoya & pathetic reputation beyond the ropes priming him as my villain non-pareil for 2002.

When it emerged in the aftermath he was desperate enough to batter De La Hoya to shame his so-called Machismo pride with PEDs, he was cemented in a long, steep fall from grace. Permanently. The experience of fighting an old Mayorga in his declared-last fight & having to await the scorecards, not in his favour, would have amounted to a special brand of agony, I imagine.

Unlike Lewis-Tyson and Barrera-Morales 2, De La Hoya-Vargas lived up to the hype and expectations.

I was only on secondsout then though, not boxingtime.

    Easy up guy

I mentioned the fight cause it was also in 2002, and was very anticipated. Remember the fight was suppose to be held during Cinco De Mayo weekend and was cancelled which only made the fight more hyped leading into the fall. A very good year for boxing, and a great time to be a poster on boxing boards. The only year that I could think of that was better overall was 2000.

The biggest single fight in Message Board context I can recall, in terms of the magnitude & hyperbole on the boards, was 2001's Hopkins-Trinidad. The lead-up was rabid. I picked Hopkins by a very narrow decision, & remember clearly catching absolute hell from an army of Boricua's for my trouble. I never imagined Hopkins would do it so easily.

How many people got pissed off when 9/11 delayed Trinidad/Hopkins?
