Rumor has it that two-time former world champion Rafael Márquez of Mexico could face off againat Puerto Rican star Juan Manuel López on September 18 in Las Vegas for Juanma’s WBO featherweight world championship. The clash would take place the week of the annual Mexican Independance Day festivities and be the latest collision in the fabled rivalry between Mexican and Puerto Rican fighters. Sources report that a lot depends Juanma’s scheduled defense against Filipino Bernabe Concepcion on July 10 in Puerto Rico. - Fightnews.com
Would be a great bout. Marquez has ruined Vazquez (probably with their third meeting) & was in devastating touch against his countryman & great rival during his last outing...but still questions linger regarding how much Marquez himself has, & this is a fresh weightclass for him. He is a well-preserved 35-year-old, but even so, you would have to say a 35-year-old fighter, with a rep for being chinny, moving into a new division, & on the back of three taxing wars going up against a 28-year-old natural to the weightclass with a super-punch has at least some of the hallmarks which foretell the ancient Boxing tale of the new replacing the old. That said, Lopez does have some clear deficiences. That fight with Mtgawa worried a lot of his backers, & with good reason. Marquez can expose those with some precise punching & a high output. We'll see. It's an awful long way from reality at this stage.
lame fight, but it makes sense financially for both guys. marquez can enjoy his retirement afterwards.
I think Lopez isn't ready for a fighter with the experience and skills of Marquez. I'm a fan of Lopez but I gotta say it like it is. He shouldn't be looking for Marquez when he haven't taken care of Caballero. Matter of fact is that YES, Lopez is DUCKING Caballero.
It's quite possible Lopez is indeed biting off more than he can chew. Could also see the points I made swinging it in his favour, though. I would just be crushed if Marquez lost this fight, should it be made --- somehow, it means more to me than Mayweather-Marquez, & would be more upsetting if Marquez lost this one. A defeat could well be the end. Maybe that's it.
You don't think Lopez has significant vulnerabilities, or is it simply they are there, but Marquez is all wrong to take advantage? Don't misunderstand me --- I see some solid reasons as to why Marquez wouldn't win, but I can't say Lopez is some manner of shoo-in, here. Marquez has what it takes & if there's a favourite, while I would lean with Lopez, I don't think I'd do so by much at all.
Marquez has proven his resilience. It took Israel vazquez, someone with a great chin and a heart as big as marquez, to beat him. Vazquez was able to walk marquez down, and that's something that Lopez won't be able to do. Lopez lacks the experience, and when he fought mtagwa he looked lost. Lopez and Marquez are equal on power, with an edge to Lopez in One-punch power. marquez doesn't have the best chin, but Lopez isn't exactly Roberto Duran either. Skills, Marquez is the most polished of the two having trained under Nacho for years, and that will be the difference in this fight.
Have to agree. But its more BOB ARUM in this case than anything who's avoiding Caballero. And why not, right??... 2 reasons. 1-Caballero is tall, awkward, can punch, can box, and seems to take a decent shot. 2- Caballero is very low reward. When you combine those two factors, you can see why Lopez was steered clear from him. And recently, the same happened with Gamboa. Arum simply SHOT DOWN that fight and blamed Caballero's team but everybody knows the deal. He just is not willing to put either of his 2 stars against the very best of that division. As far as Lopez and Marquez, great potential fight but Lopez has gotta take care of Concepcion first and if he overlooks him, we can have another Mtagwa situation. Lets wait and see first is what I say.
Interesting fight because I still cant' tell how Rafa fares with the rest of the competition around him. I havent' seen him fight anyone but Vazquez for years now. I really became a fan of Juanma when he beat the shit out of Ponce Deleon but lately he is just annoying. I think the problem with Juanma is that he let the fame get to his head. it didn't help when Tito, Calderon, And Cotto are publicly passing the torch to him as the next great PR Legend before he deserves it. I think Juanma should beat him with speed alone. I'm also not confident in Rafa's new corner with Zaragoza. He is not replacing Nacho anytime soon.
I am more worried for Lopez than for Marquez. Marquez is an older, more beaten boxer, but Lopez looked like shit against a C level fighter like Mtgawa. Marquez has the edge here IMO, but I'll be rooting for my boricua boy anyway and elevating my prayers to Chinnus Maximus (where art thou, O' FreeIke?).
