The former light heavyweight champ heads north. During last Saturday night's broadcast of Ward vs. Green, former light heavyweight champ Antonio Tarver revealed his plans to return to the ring - at heavyweight. "I definitely wanted to move up to cruiserweight," Tarver said. "There was one guy in particular that I wanted to fight. But unfortunately, he's interested in unburying dead men. "So I feel that if I'm going to stay in the game of boxing and give it my all, I've got to set big goals for myself. And as you see, I'm looking a little full right now. So I'm going to put on some muscle and the champ is going heavyweight. So, to the Klitschkos and to David Haye, be on the lookout, because I'm coming." Tarver (27-6, 19 KOs) last fought in May 2009 when he dropped a unanimous decision to Chad Dawson in their rematch. Good luck Milk dud you're gonna need it
Tarver is coming back strictly for the cash, and he'll make some nice purses that will be featured on Showtime as he may beat 1 or 2 heavys. He won't beat either Klit or Haye, but he may receive a shot at one of them as it will be a very lucrative fight in Europe.
People thought Chris Byrd was going to kick ass when he moved back down in weight to LH/Cruiser. Tarver is 41. Not sure this will end well for him.
haye or adamek would both smash what's left of tarver. that and who's gonna fight tarver? he brings nothing to the table.
Sparring with Tarver Chris sparred with Tarver for the Bernard Hopkins fight, but Chris went too hard and Buddy couldn't get him to lighten up in there, so he had to let Chris go. If you guys recall, during that first interview I did with Henry I questioned him about it and told him that he put a beating on Antonio and was asked to leave, but he corrected me and said he wouldn't say he put a beating on Tarver, but that he spars like he fights, which is all out, which is the Houston norm. Incidentally, ask Buddy McGirt what he thinks of Chris Henry, Buddy is one of his biggest supporters, and calls Chris "The Modern Day Bennie Briscoe." Karl
so basically henry missed out on some good money as well as good experience against one of the better light heavyweights of the past decade because he is not professional. One would have to ask McGirt if he chose that name based on appearance more so than ability.
Why is Tarver moving to HW a bad thing? Back in the good old days we had all manner of guys moving up. Not just moving on up, but winning titles, and, in some non-title instances, beating the shit out of heavyweights. Mickey Walker, Harry Greb, Mike Spinks, Mike Moorer, must be a Mike thing. You know, like Mikey Mouse, as in Mikey Mouse days of old, like the Mikey Mouse night when a fat slob aged 42 and a former 175lb champ fought for the title. Great days. :shit:
The heavyweight division is a mess. I know it is a mess because Frank Maloney said it is a mess. Frank said it was a mess because Evander was fighting Botha out in Moscow or something. He said this when he was promoting John McMuffin vs Tyson Dreary, which was a major success and did a lot of good for boxing in Britain.:nono::nono:
This made me laugh out loud, but wouldn't it be poetic justice for Tarver to put on muscle, go up in weight, go back down, and then get stretched by someone currently in the titlefight mix?
Already happened. Tarver blamed the loss to Hopkins on bulking up for Rocky 6 and then cutting back down to 175. What an idiot. ::
Tarver didn't bulk up. He just stopped exercising. You can see he's all flabby and sh*t in Rocky 6.:: He's physically the least impressive opponent Rocky ever faced in all the Rocky movies. Look at the physiques of Rocky's opponents including Appolo Creed, Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago and Tommy Gunn. Then look at Tarver's flabby ass. The guy not only had no physique, he had no charisma or acting ability. Stallone made a huge mistake casting this guy.
I disagree about Tarver's charisma. I thought they did not use him properly in the movie. say what you want about Tarver but he is a pretty good/funny interview. The guy loves to talk shit. The problem is Rocky 6 is that he barely talked. He is the type of guy that you have to let him talk. Hell he talks better than he fights nowadays. Fucking Dibella got more lines in that movie. :dunno:
