He was certainly a character... but what most impresses me about Ali was his guts Even the biggest Ali hater (the kind that still bring up the draft issue, while clearly not understanding it at all) could never deny how tough he was... one of the absolute toughest guys that ever fought
Certainly more than a pretty face, & IMO, plainly the toughest exponent at Heavyweight of his particular style of Boxing.

Unreal toughness which he has been paying for since the early 1980's.......there is a reason why we get KO'd, go down, stay down. It is a defense mechanism. When it fails, you get what you had with Ali. That man must have no quality of life, and anytime I see these people doing Ali documentaries I often wonder if they have given any consideration to the hell he has been in since the 1980's. Basically you are dealing with a fine male physical specimen who has slowly but surely left behind a life where he was the man, who knocked the dust off women and his opponents...and reached a stage where he now cannot remember what he had for breakfast and has zero mobility. I never liked Ali but I wouldn't be him for all the tea in China.
Really can't see why. He signed the hardest fight realistically available to him about 45 consecutive times between 1964-81, I can't see any reason why he'd be hated. And the above 'fact' (I mean I'm sure there were 1 or two exceptions, but the spirit of the fact is correct) is what impresses me most about him above his chin his speed, his jab, his charisma or anything else. He talked too much shit for todays tastes IMHO. And the way he dissected Frazier pre-fight still leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. Nowadays a man's worth as a fighter is often considered seperate to his out-the-ring persona. That would have counted against Ali I reckon. MTF
Shit talking was held in even lower esteem back then. My grandfather was a military man and a Joe Louis fan he couldn't stand Ali. His heart and charisma eventually won that generation over too though. My point is the shit he talked today would be different then the shit he talked back then because it was a different era. I doubt he'd call Frazier an uncle tom today for example. If he acted the same in this day and age (which isn't sure thing because a lot of it was a new act that was never seen before) he would upgrade his smack to reflect the times.
