How will a fight between two shot fighters end that debate?

Couture should beat the shit out of Toney on their feet. Push him right against the cage and go to work. Of course, Toney will reach down and try to grab a leg at which point he'll get guillotined and that will be that.

If the match goes to the ground, I hope Couture breaks his arm. No pause, not wait for tap, just breaks it.

What's the pause? Do the guys hold the arm or whatever at a certain point to allow the tap before they go for the kill?

I need someone who participates to answer.

I had a little judo back in college and it's very possible to get a guy in a position where he has to tap so you don't break his elbow. I'm guessing it will be easy enough to get Toney in such a position.

Speaking of Toney, check out this horribly photoshopped picture of him from the UFC's website...

Toney hasn't been in that kind of shape in 10 years.

Looks like Toney is doing the right things to get ready for this one.

Toney in cage fighting. If this shot, old, fat former boxing champion has ANY success in the UFC, cage fighting's credibility is GONE and I will remind you all every single day. :bears:

What happens if Couture destroys Toney? Do you think other boxers will want to step up to try and defend boxing's honor, or do you think a convincing beatdown of Toney will be enough to keep them from crossing over?

Boxers at the top will never cross over, not as long as the pay scales are the way they are.

Toney is a terrible boxer these days. It wouldn't really tell us anything about how a peak boxer would do.

But Toney can still make good money boxing, and could probably earn himself a title shot with a couple of good wins. I agree, his best days are a couple of weight classes ago, but I respect him for actually backing up his words, especially when more potentially lucrative options are available in boxing.

It's not like Floyd or Hopkins, talking a bunch of trash about the sport, knowing damn well they don't have the balls to step into the cage.

Yeah, but Toney isn't capable of a couple of good wins. He couldn't beat Sam Peter, and that was a few years ago. Many at ringside thought Fres Oquendo beat him too. Toney doesn't have any coordination left. He loses his balance when he punches.

Toney also mumbles his words and doesn't train hard. And he's in his 40s. It's not even about his best days being a few weight classes ago... at one point he was a serviceable heavyweight, but those days are long gone.

Floyd and Hopkins can say what they want, they're real athletes close to the top of a real sport that pays professional athlete level money.

Sure, they can say what they want, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they're all talk and no action.

What about it? I agree that Toney's best days are behind him. But he can still make some money in boxing, probably more than he'll make in the UFC. I respect that he's backing up his boasts, although I think he's grossly overestimating his chances of success.

He can´t beat a top 20 heavyweight anymore. He already failed two piss tests. He doesn´t even look like a fighter. He has no leverage with TV or the sanctioning bodies. Why would anyone bother with Toney? There is absolutely no money to be made with James Toney in boxing. Toney goes where the money is. It´s not the love for the sport that brought him to the UFC. He ran out of options.

How would Toney, or anyone for that matter, landing a KO shot against Couture ruin any sport's credibility? Couture is over 47 years old!!!

Personally, if Toney doesn't hurt Couture, I guess it will be safe to assume that guys like Nog, Liddell, Lesnar, and Vera are better punchers than one of the best boxers of his generation. Right?

If I was you I would be far more concerned with explaining how Toney WASN'T able to knockout an almost 50 year old Randy Couture that WAS easily knocked out Brock Lesnar who had ZERO boxing experience.

To me, it's an old boxer versus an old wrestler on a level playing field. Just enjoy it. It means nothing about either sport on the whole. Toney isn't a complete representation of boxing just as Couture isn't a complete representation of MMA. It's a novelty bout and nothing more.
