Strikeforce: Kennedy-Jacare for title; Lawal vs. Feijao, Gurgel vs. Noons set

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jul 10, 2010 at 11:05 am ET
The post-Jake Shields era has begun in earnest for Strikeforce.

With the promotion's former middleweight champion recently released and likely heading to the UFC, Strikeforce officials announced late Friday night that top middleweight contenders Tim Kennedy and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza will meet at "Strikeforce: Houston" with the winner claiming the promotion's now-vacant 185-pound title.

Previously reported bouts of light heavyweight champ Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal vs. Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante and Jorge Gurgel vs. K.J. Noons were also made official, and Bobby Lashley will also appear on the card.

The Showtime-broadcast "Strikeforce: Houston" event takes place Aug. 21 at the Toyota Center in Houston.

Kennedy (12-2 MMA, 3-0 SF) comes into the bout on the strength of four-straight wins, including three stoppage victories for Strikeforce. The former Army sniper debuted for Strikeforce with a second-round submission-via-punches win over Nick Thompson in June 2009, and he's since submitted both Zak Cummings and Trevor Prangley.

Meanwhile, Souza (12-2 MMA, 2-0 SF) also brings a dangerous submission attack to the cage. The 30-year-old is a five-time world champion in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and he finished as the runner-up in the 2005 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championship's absolute division.

The Kennedy-Souza announcement comes as a bit of a surprise as Strikeforce officials had indicated previously to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that a tournament seemed the most likely way to crown a new champion. Nevertheless, Kennedy and Souza are certainly two of the most talented middleweights on Strikeforce's roster.

Lawal (7-0 MMA, 2-0 SF), an NCAA Division II national champion who won numerous amateur wrestling titles, made his pro debut in 2008 with the Japanese-based World Victory Road organization. He's since posted seven straight wins, including a KO of Mike Whitehead at "Strikeforce: Evolution" and a unanimous-decision win over then-champ Mousasi at "Strikeforce: Nashville" in April.

Now ranked among the division's top 10, he faces a tough Cavalcante (9-2 MMA, 2-1 SF), who rebounded from an upset TKO loss to Mike Kyle in his Strikeforce debut with knockouts of Aaron Rosa and Antwain Britt in his two most recent bouts. All nine of the EliteXC veteran's career victories have come via stoppage (eight via knockout).

Gurgel (13-6 MMA, 1-1 SF) limps into the matchup with a 2-3 record in his past five fights, but the Ohio-based grappling ace always puts on a show. Gurgel dropped a close decision to Billy Evangelista in November, but the Brazilian's willingness to stand and trade in every fight has earned him a place in many fans' hearts.

Meanwhile, Noons (9-2 MMA, 1-0 SF) looks to build on a successful Strikeforce debut. The former EliteXC champ outstruck Conor Heun and managed a split-decision victory in the June matchup. Noons has now won five-srtaight contests dating back to July 2007.

Lashley (5-0 MMA, 1-0 SF) fights against an opponent yet to be named. The former professional wrestler debuted for the promotion in January with a TKO win over Wes Sims. He had been linked to a possible June contest, but those plans deteriorated, and the American Top Team fighter will now wait until August to return.

Wow, Noons vs punching bag Gurgel. How fucking ridiculous is that fight. It would be nice if just once Gurgel actually used his strength and tried to take the fight to the ground. He's got the Arturo Gatti defense, blocking most shots with his face. Should be an easy KO for Noons.

The ONLY fight I even care about seeing Noons in is a rematch with Diaz.

Don't tell me you wouldn't want to see it though. I think Diaz wins a rematch, he has looked great lately and seems much improved since the loss to Noons.

Diaz has more than just striking though, his real strength is on the ground.

Yeah. Diaz still cuts. And Noon's straight shots will open them up again.

Diaz is a far improved striker from the Noons fight.

Noons is a joke. He avoided a rematch with Diaz and that should tell you all you need to know.

And how bad did Noons look in a striking war with Connor Huen in his last fight?

Gotta disagree with you there. Is striking is exactly the same. He does the same old shit he has been doing since before Noons. The problem is that he isnt facing any pro boxers like Noons is.

And Noons didnt avoid a rematch with Diaz, he wasnt going to give him one because of how disrespectful he Diaz was to his father. He threw wather in his father's face and bad mouthed him for over a year. He doesnt need Diaz. I wish they would fight again, but Noons has his principles.

As for his last fight, before that noons last fight was in March, but he hadnt fought in 2 years before then. that is why he fought so soon after March. He is trying to get all of the cobwebbs out. Also, everyone looks bad against Huen.

At the point that Diaz was clamoring for a rematch with Noons, what was the reasoning for a rematch? Noons clowned Diaz. It wasn't like it was a close or disputed fight. Noons bloodgeoned Diaz and forced the fight to be stopped.

There was none. The only reason people wanted the rematch because they were shocked it happened. But Diaz got his ass kicked. Noons was going to give the rematch until that incident after the edwards fight.

Well, actually EliteXC was also calling for the rematch and wanted it on their CBS card. They stripped Noons of the title for running like a sissy from Diaz.

And the fight was far from a 'clowning'. Noons land some shots but the first round ended with Noons on his back. The first round wasn't even worthy of a 10-8 scoring for Noons. Diaz pushed the pace, land a few shots of his own and got a couple take downs. It's not like Diaz was out by any means.

Noons won the first round no doubt, but the fight was stopped due to a cut, you're acting like Noons knocked Diaz out.

I agree. I was pissed that fight was stopped. Diaz has sick cardio and the longer it went, the more it favored him.

Plus the idea that Noons "stuffed" the take down attempts is a little bit of hyperbole. Diaz complete 2 out of 5 shots. That's not being "stuffed" in my opinion.

And here's the other thing. If Noons easily destroyed Diaz and wasn't scared shitless, then why give up a belt in order to avoid him?

The thought of a Diaz rematch scared Noons into disappearing from the MMA scene for almost 2 years.

    Pathetic.

    Here's the fight....

    <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OjS_-KnCkIg&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OjS_-KnCkIg&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Now tell me what Diaz did in that fight to deserve a rematch? He was totally outclassed standing up. And Noons stuffed all but one of Diaz's takedowns, and the time he was taken down, Diaz could do nothing and Noons was back on his feet in less than 15 seconds.

Noons busted up Diaz, blocked all but one take down, and was never even close to being hurt. He dropped Diaz with a punch, and pretty much teed off on him. As he used good head movement and dodged most of Diaz's punches.

So again I ask, based on that performance, why should Diaz have been given a rematch?

On a side note...for being a 'boxer', Noons throws some horribly wide punches.

You're ignoring the fact that Diaz got another take down at the end of the round. The round ended with Noons being slammed on his back. And then it was stopped between rounds because of cuts.

You should really ask EliteXC why they wanted the rematch. And even further, ask KJ Noons why he would give up a belt, disappear from MMA and look like an utter pussy just to avoid a guy that he apparently had no problem beating.

As I said before, Noons got the better of the first round but it wasn't 10-8 worthy and Diaz was NEVER out of the fight.

If you watch that round and see Diaz being outclassed I have no fucking idea what you are watching. Diaz was winning the round up until he got dropped with that shot, he had two take downs and was landing more strikes than Noons. Noons was far from dominant in that round. That was a very competitive round.

That second takedown happened after the bell, so it doesn't count. It's no different then if Diaz punched him after the bell. That obviously wouldn't count either.

You say Diaz was never out of the fight...when was he in the fight? Noons teed off on him at will, stuffed all but one takedown, and when he was taken down, he got right up. Diaz did nothing....nothing...that round, other then maybe land one or two of his weak pitty pat punches that never came close to hurting Noons.

It may not have been 10-8, but Noons clearly won that round. And Noons cut him up with a knee and a punch, it wasn't any cheap elbows on the ground.

So I'm still waiting for you to show me what Diaz did in that fight to warrant a rematch.

Because if you did, there's no way in hell you'd think Diaz was winning anything.

I already said in an earlier post that noons won the round, you must have alternate ending to the round where Diaz is out cold or something judging by your posts.

Are you really saying Diaz wasn't competitive?

The fight was stopped on cuts while Diaz was still the aggressor and finished the first round by slamming Noons on his back. He backed Noons up the entire round. If not for cuts, the fight continues and the best man wins. The cuts were a legitimate reason for stoppage but more a result of Diaz's problem with cutting as opposed to Noon's landing a ton of shots.

At no point was Noons 'teeing' off on Diaz. KJ spent the majority of the round fighting going backwards and barely landed more shots than Diaz. It was competitive and would have been even more heated if not for the cuts forcing a stoppage.

But the most important thing is that EliteXC mandated a rematch and Noons chose to run from MMA, the fight, and Diaz. That much cannot be debated.

I never understood why losing by a cut somehow invalidates the win.

The talent pool in EliteXC was pretty thin, so a rematch against Diaz made sense because there was nobody else for Noons to face with the name value of Diaz, but Noons had beaten Diaz, and beaten him fair and square, and Diaz did nothing in the fight to deserve a rematch, so Noons wanted to move on.

To be honest, had the ref not stopped it, Noons probably would've KO'd Diaz.

Where do I start with this one. First, Noons didn't move on, he ran from Diaz, MMA, and got stripped of his belt for flat out refusing to fight Diaz.

Next, it's a huge assumption to say Noons probably would have knocked Diaz out. Let's be honest Diaz took a huge knee and a huge right hand and was absolutely no where even close to being out. In fact, at the point the fight was stopped, Diaz was pushing the action and was seconds removed from slamming Noons on his back. It's just as easy to assume that the take downs were getting easier for Diaz and it was just a matter of time until he subbed KJ.

I know your hate for the Diaz brothers and that camp tints your view from time to time, but I can't believe you're trying to make it seem like Noons steamrolled Diaz. A rematch was the best matchup EliteXC had at the time. The fans wanted it. Diaz wanted it. But Noons and his daddy didn't have the stones for it.
