Arum: Pavlik Staying at 160, Facing Chavez Jr. on Dec. 4

According to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, it's very possible that Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KOs)and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30KOs) will collide on December 4 at Cowboys Stadium in Texas. Last week, a report ran on BoxingScene.com that Pavlik was seriously considering the possibility of remaining in the middleweight division. The Youngstown native had previously announced his desire to move up in weight to 168-pounds. After thinking it over, Pavlik came to a decision and informed Top Rank that he would hire a nutritionist and remain at 160-pounds.

Before Chavez and Pavlik face off, the unbeaten Mexican will return to action on September 11, and Top Rank is looking for a very solid opponent to prepare him for Pavlik. Arum says both sides have agreed to the fight in December. Chavez's new trainer, Freddie Roach, gave Arum his blessing to make the fight happen.

"We're going to get the best available guy that we can get for him to fight," said Arum. "Because Chavez is going to need that going into the Pavlik fight in December. Both sides have agreed to the fight in December, and Bruce Trampler is looking for a September opponent for Chavez."

"We gave Kelly Pavlik the option of going to 168 or staying at 160, and he said that he would rather stay at 160. Kelly says that, with a nutritionist, he has no problem making 160 pounds. So then, in lining up an opponent for Pavlik, I called Freddie, and Freddie gave the go ahead for a Pavlik fight because Chavez is looking for a big fight."

Pavlik is looking to rebound from April twelve round decision loss to Sergio Martinez, while Chavez is looking for a big win to bring his career to the next level.

If acene boy somehow pulls the upset, it'd officially mark the end for Pav.

They're banking on Pavlik coming off the Martinez embarassment, and after a long layoff to be shot. And they're banking on Acne boy to be improving, and under the guidance of Roach to be able to beat Kelly. I wouldnt bet on it... but if Chavez won, it wouldnt be THE biggest shock to me. Pavlik probably peaked in the Taylor fights. His unhealthy lifestyle outside the ring, combined with his injuries, his two embarassing losses, and the long layoff by December.... hell maybe Jr pulls it off.

Either it's a hunch or they know something for sure - for example, what if Pavlik were drunk all day and the guys at TR knew it somehow? This would give them confidence I would think that their new man, Chavez, could take him.

On the other hand, there's a possibility they're indifferent as to who wins, or at least indifferent enough to take their chances. This may be part of the motivation of putting Chavez in there with another good opponent before Pavlik takes him on, so that should he win (and not Chavez), it'll have been against a guy with at least some credibility as an opponent, and could help restart Pavlik's career.

Another possible scenario is that Chavez is indeed benefiting from the same, "gear" that people think Pacquiao is, in which case, they'd be supremely confident that no matter which Pavlik shows up, Chavez will prevail, although this seems less likely when you consider that although Chavez won the Duddy fight handily, he hardly seemed invulnerable.

Ha ha ha. Just read in the newspaper Pavlik claims Chavez was the only guy out there for him to fight, with the author citing the Super-Six tournament as one reason.

Only seen John 3-4 times...he is nothing great..maybe the size advantage he has over Lopez will make the difference but not skills.

The dude is really a pussy. I think Hopkins forever took his man hood. Its apparent that Kelly wants NO PARTS of guys his own size. And make no mistake about it, Pavlik IS a super middleweight. Hell he's probably the biggest middleweight theres been since G-man. He's just a bitch ass bully who wants to try his luck picking on smaller guys, cause he knows he'd get his ass handed to him at 168.

He's running neck and neck with David Haye for coward of the year award.

I have a hunch that by this time next summer Kelly Pavlik will be getting fed to a guy like David Lemeuix. Even though Lemeuix's chin and stamina have yet to be tested, he has the speed and power to blow Kelly out the water in another year or so.

Pavlik is no pussy, you are way off base questioning his man-hood.

I'd like to see you get in the ring with him, of course, with instructions to your next of kin where to send your remains to after he is done with you.:boohoo:

Yes, he may have already peaked with the Taylor fights, but I think this is going to be a hell of a fight.

Many folks are underestimating Jr., but he is a pretty good fighter, not one of boxing's elite, but is well schooled and hits to the body quite well and is a big kid.

IMO, this has the potential to be an explosive, grueling war.

of course Pavlik would beat the hell out of anybody here...but by world class boxer standards he has been a bit of a pussy since the Hopkins schooling...

Jr is mediocre and will get KO'ed inside of 3 rounds..

Kelly doesn't care what typists like yourself think, you lack the courage to even print your name, photos, and resume here, and for that matter, anywhere else.

Chavez hasn't the wear and tear of Pavlik, but he will be up to the mark for this one, and I am predicting that Pavlik will stop him in a heck of a fight.

I relly like this fight. People always crying that Chavez jr. hasn't fought anybody and with good reason.

Now this is a real test and I wanna see it. he'll either get killed by Pavlik or show something.

I also don't think that Pavlik is shot. He's had problem with guys that can move. But anybody that stands and trades with the guy is in trouble.

    Interesting fight!

As far as Lopez vs. Jhon is just dumb. Lopez might as well fight Caballero already and stop ducking him.
