Everyone talks about the left hooks of orthodox fighters such as Mosely, De La Hoya, Trinidad, Frazier, etc, but who are the owners of the greatest right hooks from the orthodox position? Guys that would absolutely maul you with the right hook and knock your head clean off.

Pacquiao, although that has only become a big weapon in recent years.

Pacquiao is a lefty. He's talking about an orthodox throwing a hook with the right hand I suppose.

Yeah, it's not too often an orthodox fighter has a right hook as a primary weapon that I can think of...

Well then technically they would have to switch to a southpaw stance to throw a "proper" right hook.

For the most part only switch hitters like Hagler would meet the criteria.

So you are saying that no great fighter utilized a devastating right hook?

You could make a case for Lewis. While mainly threw the straight, the shot that murdered Rahman was a right hook.

I know Roy Jones threw a damn good one, even a KO to the body with one over Hill.

Vitali throws wide rights. Just about any slugger will have it. Shavers had it. People use the word "Clubbing" for a right hand that arrives in a wide fashion, like a hook. Sam Peter I suppose is almost the king of the big wide right to the brain stem.

Been years since I saw it but I remember him changing it up. He'd throw the straight and Rahman would stick his arms straight out, so he threw more of a left hook, right hook combo I thought.

You guys are probably right, I'll have to watch it again.

Tyson had a braindamaging right hook. It was the second last punch in the combination that floored Pinklon Thomas. Tyson used a crunching right hook to the body to set up the right hook or right uppercut to the head.

George Foreman had a clubbing right hook. It was clumsy of course but had sickening power

no because a cross is straight. if by right hook, the thread means punches that are thrown in looping fashion, then Lewis's KO punch of Rahman was indeed a right hook, and not a right cross.

Right hook is an awkward punch to throw from an orthodox stance and this is why it's rarely seen.

Aaron "Superman" Davis had a good right hook from what I remember. I think Earnie Shavers was a right hook man as well.

Correct. It was a right hook. Rahman was throwing his hands up in front of him (on "advice" from his corner) in order to block the Cross..and Lewis went around the guard with a hook.

It was a long right hook from Lennox. It was a bit deceptive-looking because it had to travel around Rahman's left arm, but it's not a cross.

Goddamn it sure iced Rahman though.

well its not a true hook if you throw it that way, it is more of an overhand right... a hook is a LEAD punch, not a REAR punch... if its thrown from a rear position, its not a true hook

That was my understanding of this thread. It's actually not a punch that hits all that often as fighters are very wary of it and it is telegraphed to an extent just based on physiology.

True but it is generally referred to as a hook.

because of the shape of the arm when throwing it, more than anything, though I would characterize such a punch as a "Haymaker" or a "Roundhouse right"

in that spirit, Foreman is a great example

still, I maintain its not proper to refer to such a punch as a hook, anymore than it is to refer to a cross as a jab

    Roundhouse right it is then.

Mike Tyson threw a good one to the body only though...

Yeah he was a good one. Especially to the body. I suppose the right "hook" to the body is less awkward than to the head.

EDIT: Is it just me or is Tyson standing in a southpaw-ish position at certain points during flurries.

Frazier also used that weapon only for bodypunching, but even then it was more to set up his Left Hook

Tyson definitely through his with more ooomph on it, it wasnt necessarily set up like Frazier's

    BUMP!

Is the KO punch a right hook? I've heard the term before though it may technically be incorrect.
