News Back to News Index 19/08/10 - Report: Semmy Schilt, current holder of the K-1 World Grand Prix belt and the only man ever to win three consecutive K-1 Grand Prix, is in talks with the UFC about joining the heavyweight division, according to several Dutch forums. Schilt landed himself in hot water last week by making a joke about the K-1 belt being stolen from his possession. It turned out to be some kind of publicity stunt in co-ordination with a Dutch radio station, which roped in respected Dutch newspaper Den Telegraaf among others. K-1 executives reacted with less than good humour and told media in Japan that Schilt may be precluded from entering the World Grand Prix this year. "Schilt was sorry if someone was concerned about the belt gone missing and apologized on twitter. They are not happy with the statement made by the K1 and emphasize that they have the utmost respect for the belt and the fans. However, they still thought it was pretty damn funny," according to quotes posted on Mixfight.nl "Schilt has fought MMA in the past and says that he will be able to defeat Brock Lesnar. Talks with Dana White have already started and a 3 fight contract is a possibility." K-1 just could be using this situation as an expedient one to take Schilt out of the running for this year’s Grand Prix. While he is the most dominant GP champion the organisation has seen (matching Ernesto Hoost for titles won but exceeding him in consecutive wins), he is not massively popular with fans and has been accused of being boring. Japanese fans and thus Japanese promoters are big on excitement and gimmickry, something they have demonstrated a commitment to many times in the past. It is very likely K-1 are overstating their ire at Schilts joke as a handy way of shunting him to the sidelines this year and letting someone else (Badr Hari) win the GP. Equally, Schilt’s camp at Golden Glory could be taking a jab at K-1 by putting the prospect of a UFC move out there. But don’t forget, he was cage side at UFC 93 in Dublin - alongside Alistair Overeem - and has fought in the UFC before. Fighters Only has contacted Golden Glory for more information and will update this story when it is received.
Can he even make 265? The dude is huge and doesn't look like he has 40 pounds to lose. He weighs 290+
This is a ploy, IMO. Also K1 is trash now. Hoist dominated K1 in it's prime. He's way better than Semmy.
Hoost lost to Bob Sapp. Semmy Schilt has beaten Hoost twice and drawn with him once. Hoost was dominant at one point, but so were many fighters.
Hoost was way past his prime then. And losing odd fights doesn't matter in K1. Consistency is more important. No one is more consistent Than Hoost. Schilt lost to Choi if you want to play that game. Also it should be noted that Hoost fucked up Sapp so bad he would advance anyway and win the tournament despite being in twighlight of his career. Semmy fights like a faggot anyway. He's the K1 version of GSP.
Losing odd fights doesn't matter, sure. Losing back to back fights against the same guy and then never fighting that guy again definitely matters. I'm not playing a game; I'm defending a point---namely that Hoost is NOT way better than Semmy. Hoost was getting planked too many times by too many guys to say he was way better than Semmy. You're giving Hoost credit for going on to win a tournament even though he was already knocked out? Hoost didn't belong in the tournament after being eliminated. He shouldn't have been in the final after getting KO'd. He should have been on medical suspension. They just trotted him out there because he's Hoost and had the name recognition---not because he deserved to fight again right after getting stopped. Sefo hurt his shin on Hoost's knee---it's not like Hoost dominated him. LOL. Schilt competed in K-1, MMA, and Pancrase. It's funny you give Hoost accolades for winning in the "twilight" of his career. He was the same age Schilt was when Schilt won the K-1 World Grand Prix. The only difference is Schilt didn't lose in his previous tournament match (he won his), and he didn't win because his opponent injured himself in a freak accident (Sefo injured his shin)---Schilt won the hard way, by beating a guy who had knocked him out 7 months before (Badr Hari---a scorching KO artist). Schilt came through in the clutch and KO'd the guy who KO'd him previously. That's HARDLY fighting like a pussy. I realize you're quite young, but have you even SEEN these fights?
Why would Hoost be on med suspension when the stoppage was bullshit? And yeah I saw the fights, I think we are talking about a different tournament though because Hoost beat JeRome on points in the final and he was way past it. I didn't watch Semmy vs Hari, they fight today and today's K1 is a joke. Hari sucks too, he got KOd by fucking Overeem for God's sake. Could Chuck beat him too? Seriously. Semmy is boring as fuck I watched him a few times and have no interest in watching that shit. All the old stars are retired or washed up, fucking Remy is still fighting on fumes, and Semmy is just stinking out leg and body jab decisions.
I'm guessing you didn't see the tournament. Hoost shouldn't have even been in the tournament, but he was included only because Semmy Schilt was injured. In other words, Hoost wasn't actually able to qualify, but he received an invite only because Hightower was injured. This is the same Hightower you claim Hoost is so much better than. Hoost was stopped in his first fight of the tournament. He shouldn't have continued in the tournament. Hoost himself had no problem with the referee stoppage at all when it happened because he was getting BATTERED in the corner. He had already been bludgeoned to the canvas, and he was taking headshot after headshot in the corner until the ref jumped in. Next fight: Sefo. Sefo injured his own foot in a freak accident. He kicked the outside of Hoost's leg and then fell right to the canvas in pain. c) Hoost went on to face LeBanner in the final. The only thing is that LeBanner had already fought three times that night already with the last one being a three-round decision over the reigning 2001 K-1 Grand Prix Champ Mark Hunt. LeBanner fought three times and THEN had to fight Hoost. Hoost only had to fight twice. First LOSING BY KNOCKOUT, and then benefitting from his opponent suffering a freak injury. The deck was stacked for Hoost whereas Hightower actually had to fight and win his way through to his own "twilight" K-1 Grand Prix title. This is why I think you didn't see these fights before commenting on them. Hoost is not way better than Schilt.
I saw it, he owned Sapp and got caught, then got a bad stoppage. He beat Prime LeBanner too. Hoost was way past it too. You are talking about a guy with over 100 fights. How many does boring ass Semmy have? 30? Talk to me once he gets near triple digits. Semmy benefits from being twice the size of everyone and cam stay safe and throw kicks for a decision. Hoost is a warrior, they don't even compare.
While i do agree Hoost is the greatest ever IMO and prime for prime, he beats semmy. Semmy is still dominent. you may not like how he wins, but he does.
Ay-yi-yi. There's no point in trying to talk sense into you, but I guess I'm masochistic. For one, you really need to get your facts straight: Schilt has around 80 fights, including his MMA career. If Hoost was way past it then, that's like saying Schilt is way past it now since Schilt is essentially the same age that Hoost was when Hoost won in 2002. Schilt and Hoost both have the same number of WGP titles, which is one of many reasons why I don't see how Hoost is way better than him as you claim. Hoost didn't own Sapp. Sapp outlanded him and manhandled him, keeping him defensive and covering up for most of the fight. Sapp actually wore himself out hammering on Hoost. Hoost was DONE, but it was Sapp who did him in. Schilt is 5 or 6 inches taller than Hari. Hardly twice his size. If he was twice his size, then Hari wouldn't have been able to knock him out with a right hand.
That's a huge size advantage over a normally tall opponent. As far as Schilt having 80 fights, Im talking kickboxing, not his joke of an MMA career. And no, obviously fighters age differently. Theresno magical age in which a fighter becomes shot. However, Hoost having hundreds of fights, starting from when he was 18 and K1 didn't even exist, relying on explosiveness, compared to Semmy having 30 or so fights and relying on keeping his opponents away and leg jabbing them are totally different. That's like saying Vitali was less shot than Ali at the same age.
Hoost is better because he got his WGP when K1 fighters were good. Not against past prime versions of Remy and JeRome and jokes like Hari, who are glass chinned and can barely keep their head on their shoulders.
It doesn't matter if you yourself talk about only kickboxing. He started out in Pancrase and he has 12 years of experience in competing in MMA fights. If you think that his MMA fights don't count as experience and wear-and-tear, you're mistaken. You can't say Hoost has hundreds of fights (which he doesn't, by the way) and then exclude 30-40 of Schilt's fights because they were MMA fights. He fought good or great MMA fighters in Pancrase, the UFC, and Pride like Mezger, Kondo, Minoru Suzuki, Masakatsu Funaki, Fedor, Big Nog, and Barnett. Fighting guys like that will wear you down, and Schilt was fighting guys like that while also competing and winning in K-1. If you were honest about this, you'd realize that Hoost is NOT way better than Schilt. You can't even make a statement like that when Schilt is still active and just won a World Grand Prix last year. Schilt may have a few more in him at his relatively late age because he has aged well and he adapts well.
K1 is a joke now, who cares if he wins? And no, getting armbarred by Fedor in round 1 does not constitute wear and tear. And Hoost has over 100 fights. Semmy isn't even near him even if you count his "MMA Career"
Unfortunately this is where my posting towards you ends. If you think K-1 is a joke, that's your opinion. If you think getting armbarred by Fedor doesn't constitute wear-and-tear, then you've never been armbarred. It can seriously mess up tendons, cartilage, and other connective tissue. Fighting in MMA will definitely inflict wear-and-tear, particularly in Pancrase where they used to utilize a lot of kneebars, heelhooks, and ankle locks. Getting those slapped on you in competition or training on a regular basis will definitely affect your kickboxing ability.
Tell me, TLC. Do you submit from an armbar or leglock because you're being held in place, or do you submit because the other person is cranking it and not tapping will likely cause permanent damage to the limb in question? Do you understand how scar tissue develops? You may avoid further soft tissue damage by submitting, but that initial pain is caused by the beginning of damage being done to the soft tissue of the limb being cranked---hence, the wear-and-tear of which I commented on earlier. You go ahead, call K-1 a joke, and say Semmy fights like a faggot. Since those were your assertions, I think we've exhausted the possibilities of discussion on this one. Personally, I'd like to see how Brock reacts when he's facing a huge K-1 championship-level striker.
