Larry Merchant was specially bred to annoy fast, black fighters in post-fight interviews. He is as specialized a piece of evolutionary brilliance as they come.
This fight was more annoying to me than the Super frog incident. Barely 50 left hands through the first 10 rounds, giving away round after round after round passively. I was convinced he must have a debilitating shoulder problem. 11th round comes and suddenly as capriciously as a beauty queen he decides to throw the shot and nearly stops Pascal in 30 seconds. Throws the first rear uppercut of his fight and nearly sparks him with one shot. This guy has borderline ATG ability and the mentality of an existentialist stoner drifting down a river to the ocean. It's a soft world today - none of these western guy's really wanna be doing what they signed up for.
:: Luckily for Larry, he's SO old now the chances of anyone actually clocking him have receded such that he's probably in the clear now. You made it baby!
I didn't like Dawson repeating over and over that he didn't complain "not one time" about the head butts and/or holding, yet there he was incessantly complaining about it in the post-fight. I also rolled my eyes as he did the classic, classic, "no excuses not taking anything away from him" shtick followed by excuses and taking as much away from Pascal as he could. BUT... with that said.. I preferred his interview to most. Yeah, he bitched a little, almost every loser does. Dawson was no more extreme than anyone else IMO. But he was terse, to the point, and basically right on about what he said. He is a man of few words, and he did not appear sad that he lost... rather, he appeared PISSED, like he could have gone right back in the ring and beat the shit out of Pascal then and there. I liked that. He also admitted it took him time to hunt down Pascal, but that was more or less his plan ("that's my fight, I fought my fight"), and he was going to KO him but was not allowed to finish due to the massive gushing cut. He stated that he had Pascal hurt badly before the fight stoppage and he was going to come out and KO him if not for the cut. I agree. Further, unlike many fighters who lose, Dawson was pining pretty hard for the rematch. He clearly believes he will win, and would have won if not for the stoppage, and I actually agree. Of all the post-fight interviews to choose as an example of "reeking", this one doesn't really stand out to me. But I do agree that Chad would have done better for himself if he would just have omitted the crap about headbutts or holding. Jean Pascal fought a hell of a fight and exceeded my expectations, but another round and a half and he would have been on his back IMO.
didnt know that. so he was born in hartsville, moved a few miles from hartford, and now you got all these folks questioning his heart.
Well, he was a well known pothead early in his career. Maybe he's still got a little THC bangin' around in his brain.
it is crazy that on the two occassions he really opened up and started throwin the one-twos he immediately hurt Pascal and seemed to be just a few well placed shots away from stopping him... but each time he just STOPPED THROWING, utterly bizarre... credit to Pascal for outhustling him, though, he earned that win
There is little point analyzing what a fighter says right after a fight when his emotions are high, especially when he is very disappointed. Very few can be coherent and analytical at that moment
Seems kinda flaky to consider him a South Carolina fighter, though. He's lived in Connecticut since he was like five or six.
I know, but it's the same difference to me when there's no reference to where he was raised. It would be like calling Joe Frazier a South Carolina native and not uttering a word about Philly.
Dawson should not be criticized for goofing off in the immediate post-fight aftermath. Remember Vitali challenging Sanders when Wlad was stopped.....or Angel Manfredy's goofy rationale that "it was all set up for him to win" after Mayweather stopped him in 2 rounds in Florida?? Fuck it, Sam Peter made a complete goof of himself after winning a world title. Who Nesh! Nobody should be riding Dawson cos he made a few goofy remarks in the immediate aftermath of losing his undefeated record .
I suppose. It didn't seem necessarily important to me as I was reading the article, though. I went by that part without giving it a second thought.
I agree, and didn't meant to dawn on it. In fact, I barely noticed it until Neil asked in this thread. The rest of it was really just a blog on a week-old fight to me.
Hmm..too bad he does not know what the phrase "assess your performance" means, huh, Jake.:giggle: The guy is an idiot. Karl
