The World Series of Boxing begins in November.

It is a continuation of a trend that began a couple years ago that will allow amateur boxers to earn a money while remaining in the unpaid ranks.

There are reginoal conferences in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

WSB offers amateur boxers salary, shot at Olympics

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. â€” Two-time Olympian Rau'shee Warren has been torn between cash and country since a demoralizing defeat at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Turning pro offered the prospects of a lucrative payday.

Just as attractive, though, was attempting to earn a spot for the 2012 London Games, which would make Warren the first three-time Olympian in U.S. boxing history.

Dollars or distinction?

Decisions, decisions.

So when a chance came along to pursue both, Warren jumped on board.

Warren is one of a handful of U.S. boxers who have agreed to participate in the World Series of Boxing (WSB), a newly formed league set to start in November that allows fighters to compete in a modified pro setup and still maintain their Olympic eligibility.

Initiated by the International Boxing Association (AIBA), the team-oriented competition featuring five weight divisions is a way to bridge the gap between Olympic boxing and the pro ranks.

This will definitely have a pro feel, too â€” no headgear will be used, bouts will consist of five 3-minute rounds and scored according to the 10-point "must" system.

Even more, this is a paying gig. Maybe not as much as a pay-per-view title bout, but lucrative nonetheless with salaries ranging from between $25,000 and a ceiling of around $300,000 per year. A fighter can also earn an extra $5,000 per win during the 12-match schedule. There will also be a playoff to crown a winner.

If that wasn't incentive enough, the five individual weight champions from the inaugural season will earn berths to the Olympics.

"It's great, because they're saying boxing is losing a lot of fans," said Warren, who took part in the USA boxing national championships last week in Colorado Springs. "Once fans see this, they might step back into boxing. Nobody's fighting bums â€” there are a lot of people fighting world champions."

Warren will be bringing his potent punches to a team based in Los Angeles. There are also squads in Boston, Miami and Mexico City, along with franchises scattered throughout Europe and Asia.

"This is such a win-win situation for everybody," said Ivan Khodabakhsh, the chief operating officer for the Switzerland-based WSB. "It will inspire athletes to come into boxing."

As fate would have it, one of Warren's teammates will be South Korea's Lee Ok-sung, the boxer who stunned Warren with a 9-8 win in Beijing.

"We can't fight each other because we're on the same team," said Warren, smiling. "But there's going to be a lot of sparring."

Other U.S. fighters scheduled to take part in the WSB include 2009 light heavyweight national champion Robert Brant and Olympian Raynell Williams, who will both box for Boston. Sijuola Shabazz (Miami) and Javier Torres (Los Angeles) also will participate.

All but Williams were on hand this week for U.S. nationals, even if this summer's event is pretty much for bragging rights since it doesn't go toward selecting the Olympic team.

"I wouldn't miss this for the world," said the 19-year-old Brant, who's from St. Paul, Minn. "I love the title of being the No. 1 in the nation."

Warren has been able to boast about being No. 1 in the nation quite a bit â€” except for last summer.

A three-time national champion, Warren dropped a close decision to Jesus Magdaleno in the semifinals in 2009, prompting Warren to storm out of the ring and proclaim, "I can't go through this no more."

Time has healed those feelings of frustration.

"I always learn something from my fights," said Warren, who's from Cincinnati.

The lesson from that one?

"Have to do more," he insisted.

It's all part of Warren's evolution as a fighter, a career filled with highs ('07 world champion) and lows (stinging Olympic losses).

Warren was the youngest male Olympian in any sport at the 2004 Athens Games, where the 17-year-old dropped his opening bout.

Then came the heartbreaking loss to Lee in Beijing. Thinking he was up a point, Warren danced around in the waning seconds.

Only he wasn't up, and broke into tears after the bout.

Warren said the Olympic experiences will serve him well should he make the team for London.

"First time, I needed experience," Warren said. "Second time, I relied on the judges, left the fight in the ring.

"This time, I've got to take over."

That's why he's been intensely training in the gym, adding power to his furious jabs.

He also has a little training buddy, his 2 1/2-year-old son, Rau'shee Warren Jr., following him around, mimicking his every move. The youngster frequently slips on gloves and saunters over to the punching bag.

"He likes to set up the jab," Warren said with pride. "It's in him already."

World Series of Boxing full squads and schedules announced

Following the World Series of Boxing (WSB) International Boxer Draft, held in London last week, the final boxer squads and schedules have now been released ahead of the start of the WSB Regular Season on November 19th 2010. Full details of the schedule can now be viewed here.

In total 87 top boxers from around the world were chosen by the franchises to make up their quota of international boxers to start the first WSB season. Highlights from the draft included the Ukrainian National Champion Sergiy Derevyanchenko, chosen by the Milan franchise, the popular Irish Olympic silver medalist Kenny Egan who heads to the Miami squad and German National Champion Ronny Beblik, who joins WSB Boston.

The WSB Season will start on November 19th and 20th, with Moscow taking on Istanbul in the Russian capital, and Milan at home against Paris. In Asia, Delhi will start their campaign at home against Astana, and Beijing take on Baku in China. In North America the first round gets underway with Miami at home against Los Angeles, and a trip for Boston to Mexico City.

Following the regional conference competitions the semi-finals will take place on April 1st 2011, followed by the WSB Finals to be held in Macau on 6-7th May 2011. After the team competitions, the top two individual boxers will compete to become champions of their weight categories on May 27-28th 2011.

In the Europe conference, the Milan franchise added to their strong national squad with the signing of six boxers across four weight divisions, including the AIBA World Championships silver medalist Benjey Zimmerman from the Netherlands Antilles, and the promising Montenegrin heavyweight Bosko Draskovic, a quarter-finalist at this year's European Championships.

Further action from the draft included Istanbul signing 2008 Olympic quarter finalist, Mohamad Arajaoui, who also reached the quarter finals in last year's AIBA World Championships in Milan. Paris signed Irish national champion John Nevin, who rocketed to success in 2008 by qualifying for the Olympics at the tender age of 18. Upon hearing of his signing by the Paris team, he commented; "Paris is good because it is only a couple of hours away from my home. One of my team mates will be going to Delhi and Kenny Egan will be going to Miami. I'm pretty happy and ready to go."

In the Asia conference, Delhi were the big movers, signing nine boxers across five different weight divisions, adding to their promising national squad which already includes some of India's finest competitors such as Vijender Singh. Olympic bronze medalist Bahodirjon Sultonov, Ukrainian Champion super-heavyweight Roman Kapitonenko and Beijing Olympics semi-finalist Abdelhafid Benchabla will all joining up with their new team mates in the Indian capital over the coming months.

Elsewhere in the Asia conference, Astana Arlans added Colombian fighter Jeysson Monroy Varela who recently won silver at the South American Games and Hungarian heavyweight Istvan Bernath, who commented; "I think the training will be very good in Astana and it will be a good competition."

Baku boosted their already strong squad with Tugstsogt Nyambayar (Mongolia) and Kobar Pkhakadze (Georgia), silver and bronze medalists respectively from last year's AIBA World Championships in Milan. But the headline signing was Baku's drafting of Denis Poyatsyka, one of the brightest boxers that Ukraine has ever produced - the four time national champion is expected to be a strong challenger for the Olympic title in London 2012.

In the North American conference highlights included Australian super-heavyweight National Champion Trent Rawlins joining WSB Miami, along with Irish boxing superstar Kenneth Egan, currently ranked fourth in the world by AIBA. Miami completed their signings to a strong squad with the signature of Beijing Olympian Jose Payares from Venezuela.

Three time German national champion, Ronny Beblik, was snapped up by the WSB Boston team. Commenting on the draft, he said; "I can easily adapt to a new location. I'm sure I will be able to learn some new skills from my American team mates." He will be joined in Boston by his compatriot, Erkan Teper, who added; "I'm really excited about going to the US and it will be great to have a German team mate'.

Los Angeles signed six international boxers, including highly fancied Brazilian, Everton Lopes, who at only 21 years of age has already caused a stir in the 61kg weight category. The final US conference franchise, Mexico City, also look a strong outfit, with Julio Cesar Castillo (Ecuador) the standout signing.

Finally, reserve boxers were drawn to represent franchises in case of injuries to their first squad of boxers. The headline signing was Hungarian light welterweight Gyula KÃ¡tÃ© to the Istanbul franchise. KÃ¡tÃ© is currently second in the latest AIBA world rankings following silver medals at the 2008 & 2009 EU Championships. Elsewhere Irish middleweight Willie McLoughlin, also a silver medalist at the 2009 EU Championships, will become a reserve at WSB Paris, and the promising young German bantamweight Marcel Schneider joins WSB Delhi.

Dr C. K. Wu, president of AIBA, the International Boxing Association who initiated the World Series of Boxing welcomed the finalization of the squads and is looking forward to the first bouts: "Through WSB, boxers have a new choice. A competition that will not only offer them long-term security, a guaranteed salary and regular competitive boxing at the highest level, but that will also allow them to retain their eligibility for the Olympic Games. That competition is the World Series of Boxing. For the first time ever, we will see a global, team boxing league in which the world's best boxers compete against each other on a regular basis, year after year."

The International Boxer Draft allowed the twelve WSB teams to select from a pool of 175 boxers from 64 countries to complete their squads of national boxers. Under WSB rules, each team must comprise a minimum of three boxers who are not from the team country. The luck of the draw determined who got first pick of the talent as the boxers were drafted in turn in each of the WSB's five weight classes (54kg, 61kg, 73kg, 85kg, 91+kg).

A manual scoring system will be used with three judges operating a 10-point "must" system in which the opponents are scored 10-9, 10-8 or 10-7 at the end of each round, based on their overall performance. The scores will be announced at the end of the bout and there will not be any live scoring during the bout itself. The referee will play no part in the judging.

With regard to the overall scoring for each match, each team will receive one point for each match that it wins - the team which wins three or more of the five bouts in a match will be the winning team. The winning team at the end of the season in each Conference will be the team which has accumulated the most points during that season.

NEW DELHI: The Indian franchise in the much-anticipated professional-style World Series of Boxing was dealt a blow on Thursday with owners Videocon deciding to back out of the event citing "unavoidable circumstances" but the Federation said it would find a new sponsor.

The Indian team ' Delhi Tigers' comprised five home-grown stars - Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Akhil Kumar, Commonwealth champions Dinesh Kumar and Jai Bhagwan and Asian bronze medallist Jitender Kumar - besides nine international boxers.

A German coach Mirko Wolf had also been hired for the team but the entire build-up ended up being an exercise in futility with Videocon backing out.

"Viedeocon has pulled out and we are looking for a new sponsor now. The team remains the same, even the foreign boxers we had signed," Indian Boxing Federation Secretary General PK Muralidharan Raja said.

The team was supposed to start its campaign against Astana ( Kazakhstan) on November 19 but franchise owners Videocon have sent out a mail to the boxers informing them that they were backing out of the event.

"This is to inform you that due to unavoidable circumstances, the Delhi Tigers - World Series of Boxing India Franchise will no longer be a part of the AIBA and IMG promoted World Series of Boxing," the franchise's General Manager Moin Merchant said in a mail sent to the boxers who are part of the team.

"Hence, we would no longer require your services towards the franchise in the form of a boxer/coach as the franchise currently ceases to exist," the brief mail adds.

Col Raja said the the opening India bouts in the WSB will go ahead as scheduled and the federation is in touch with the International Boxing Association on the matter.

"We have told AIBA about it and assured them that the event will go ahead as scheduled. The Delhi franchise will remain and we will find a new sponsor," he said.

"I really don't know why Videocon has pulled out," he added.

But sources said that the company was upset with the boxers' reluctance to sign contracts which gave the company exclusive rights over them for a three-year period.

"They wanted the boxers to be exclusively theirs for a period of three years which was not acceptable to some. The Indian Boxing Federation already has a marketing partner in the Percept group and the agreement with Videocon would have created problems on that front," a source said.

"If this is happening, it is a big blow to Indian boxing because it would have been an excellent platform for our boxers to make a name for themseleves," said one of the boxers who got the mail.

IBF secretary Raja out on SOS mission

To find a solution to the World Series Boxing franchise issue, PK Muralidharan Raja, the Indian Boxing Federation secretary, is visiting the World Women's Boxing Championships in Barbados.

Problems for the World Series of Boxing (WSB) cropped up after Videocon, who were to sponsor the Delhi franchise, opted out.

Raja will meet the International Boxing Federation chief Ching-Kuo Wu on Wednesday to discuss the matter.

Though Raja said Videocon has not officially pulled out of the series, there were issues that needed to be discussed with the AIBA (world boxing body) president. "But one thing is sure, we will have the fights as scheduled in November," said Raja.

The federation has also got feelers as regarding a new franchise for the team.

Though Raja does not want to give any specific name till everything is finalised with the world boxing body, he is hopeful of getting a sponsor.

Chandigarh : The withdrawal of Videocon as owners of the Indian franchise in the World Series of Boxing seems only the beginning of troubles. Top Indian pugilists Vijender Singh and Dinesh Kumar on Friday made it clear that they were having second thoughts on signing the contracts, which they believe are rather draconian in nature.
Signing on the dotted line in the three-year contract will mean the boxers will have to go through the franchise for all their endorsements. “We signed the initial consent letter in June but we haven’t signed the 60-page contract because of these clauses,” Beijing Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh told The Indian Express on Friday.

The contract also makes it mandatory for the boxers to have a three-year job contract with the franchise owner. This is also a worry for the boxers because most of them are either employed with the police or army and have existing deals with Indian Boxing Federations’ (IBF) marketing company Percept D’ Mark.

Shailendra Singh, director of Percept’D’Mark, confirmed on Friday that they were in talks with Videocon earlier. “We were holding negotiations with Videocon regarding Jai Bhagwan and Dinesh Kumar and there were some positive developments. But we do not know why they pulled out. We made a deal with IBF earlier this year and we can’t let the boxers’ interests suffer,” Singh added.

Miami Gallos Rally to Defeat Los Angeles Matadors in their WSB Home Opener
Tuesday, 23 November 2010 - USA, Miami

The Miami Gallos overcame a 2-0 deficit in the best of five bouts and rallied to secure a 3-2 win in front of their hometown fans in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) season debut at the American Airlines Arena last night. The Gallos and Matadors squared off in the last contest of the opening week for the new global boxing tournament with the Mexico City Guerreros opening up with a 5-0 win against the Memphis Force last Friday in Mexico City.

The Matadors took the first two bouts of the evening in the bantamweight and lightweight divisions, but the Gallos would rally with three straight victories and clinched the match win in the final bout of the evening as the Gallos' Trent Rawlins overcame Long Beach native and Matador David Imoesiri in a closely contested bout.

Just when a team win for the Gallos was looking out of reach down 0-2 after two bouts, middleweight (160 lbs/73 kg) William Williams (Conyers, Ga.) took to the ring against Matador Charlie Watson (Johnson City, Tenn.), where he made it clear the night was just getting started by taking command of the fight. Williams looked impressive in his unanimous decision victory (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) and will surely be a fighter to watch as the season unfolds.

Miami Gallos Head Coach Pat Burns was pleased with Williams' performance. "William was absolutely super in helping turn the momentum back around for the Gallos. He showed great maturity."

Kenny Egan, a 2008 U.S. Olympic silver medalist from Ireland, defeated Long Beach native Matador Dorian Anthony in a unanimous decision, 49-46, 49-47, 48-47, to notch the team score at two apiece.

"I knew from the beginning I was ready for this fight," said Egan. "I felt like he was fighting a lot with his head and not fighting a clean fight. I'm very happy with my performance and I felt like I won all five rounds. Everything is so new to me, this being my first pro-style fight, but I feel strong and I'm ready for the next one."

"I went in there with my game plan and gave it my all," Anthony said. "I didn't think about his silver medal. I felt it was a pretty fair decision for me. The momentum kept shifting both ways throughout the bout. In the last round, I kind of gave it away to some big shots."

"Kenny showcased why he was an Olympic silver medalist and was world-class against a tough opponent," said Burns. "The Matador fighter tried to take Kenny out of his rhythm but Kenny was able to maintain his composure, overcome a cut and still get the win."

Bantamweight Matador Fernando Martinez started Los Angeles off with a win defeating Jose Luis Meza Ochoa by decision, 47-47, 48-46, 48-46.

Lightweight Matador Eric Fowler notched a fourth round technical knockout against Adrian Martinez in the second bout of the evening. With 1:34 left in the fourth round, Fowler threw a right rendering Martinez defenseless against the ropes prompting referee Frank Gentile to stop the fight.

"I'm real happy for the WSB and for boxers competing in this tournament," said Burns. "This was a great success tonight. I've been in this game awhile and it's about time that we get to show fans what real boxing is about and the excitement and skill that these fighters have.

The L.A. Matadors return to Los Angeles for their home opener Sunday, Nov. 28, at the Nokia Theatre against the undefeated, inherent rival Mexico City Guerreros and hope to build momentum for the winter-long World Series of Boxing season. It will also mark the debut of two-time Olympian Rau'shee Warren for the Matadors. The Gallos will travel to Tennessee and take on the Memphis Force Friday, November 27 at the Desoto Civic Center.

These fights are being televised on VMe (mexican channel) in the US. They are being shown on Saturday nights (bad), but also a few hours later in the early hours of Sunday (good).

If anyone knows of an English language transmission, please post.

Yeah, V-Me is a public broadcasting channel in Spanish.

It's not in every area, but it is in the Bay Area (channels 191 and 621 for me) and this is the upcoming broadcasting schedule:

World Series of Boxing to air on Versus

LOS ANGELES (AP)—The fledgling World Series of Boxing has landed a domestic television outlet, inking a deal for 30 tape-delayed shows on Versus.

The WSB announced the deal Friday, two weeks after the opening matches in its debut season. The 12-team, multicontinental boxing league aims to turn amateur Olympic-style boxing into a money-making team sport.

Starting Saturday night, Versus will air competition among the WSB’s four North American franchises, based in Los Angeles, Miami, Memphis and Mexico City. Versus will broadcast all 24 regular-season matches among the four clubs, followed by four semifinals and two finals in the spring.

TDN, Televisa’s all-sports network, airs the WSB’s events in Mexico.

Fernando Martinez-Jose Luis Meza Ochoa was a really entertaining scrap won by Martinez 48-46 (2x) 47-47.

Impressed by what I saw of Martinez, who is only 21. He tired late in the fight, but showed some things against the southpaw Ochoa, who was born five years earlier and competed in the '08 Olympics for Ecuador.

In a match-up of American lightweights, short, compact southpaw Chris Fowler really manhandled the taller Adrian Martinez, pushing him around the ring until the ref finally stepped in to stop it in the fourth.
