With much speculation that Johnson would have a hard time making 168, it looks like he will actually end up making it with no issues. He weighed 171 today with a week more to go before the fight with Green. Anyone still picking Green? I got Glen by TKO.
I've never viewed Johnson as a particularly large light heavyweight. I've even thought he looked small next to the largest guys in the division. But I still didn't think he'd make weight since he's been at 175 so long, is older, and always seemed to be in good shape already. I'm not sure the fact he's already at 171 is a good thing. Add to that the number of examples of when older fighters have fallen apart after going down in weight, and I'm giving Green a good shot here. Although he too has trouble making 168 so it's hard to know. If I recall, ODH was well within the 147 limit weeks prior to his fight with Pacquiao, and it didn't seem to do him a whole lot of good. As for other examples of older fighters falling apart after losing weight: SRL RJJ Byrd
The fact that this guy lost to Sven Ottke 10 years ago really says a lot about what Super 6 has come to.
It's Been a DECADE Since Glen Johnson Fought as a Supermiddle...WEIGHING IN @ Supermiddle is Fine, but FIGHTING @ Supermiddle is Altogether Different...REED Knows he's Shown an INORDINATE Amount of Faith in Allan Green, but REED CAN'T See him LOSING this Fight... Green by UD in an Entertaining Fight, then an UNdeserved Spot in the Super 6 Semi-Finals.... REED:mj:
REED SWEARS he's DONE w/that Cat, if he Loses to a 53 Year Old, Weight Drained Glen Johnson.... REED::
It's funny we're talking about Johnson making weight when it was Green telling Ward immediately after the fight he needed to go to 175. Green has an excuse for every crap performance. If he's not on his game and fights Glen on the inside he gets beaten again. Ward showed Green can be bullied and had no idea how to fight off the ropes. I can see Green getting off shots and catching Glen coming in but what does he do in the later rounds when he tires and Glen is still pressing and on his chest?
Yeah, Green's a Bullshit Artist...Saying it to Ward IMMEDIATELY After the Fight was Pretty SORRY...The Fact that he's STILL Campaigning in the Same Division just Makes Green Look WORSE...He's Telling Everybody in Oklahoma & Texas that he "Over Trained" for the Ward Fight & Kicked John David Jackson to the Curb... Regardless, the Johnson Fight is a "WIN Or Forever Hold your Peace" Type of Scenario for Green...NO MORE EXCUSES... REED:nono:
Green looks drained at 168. Johnson's last 3 weigh ins at 175, he came in at 173. He doesn't look like a guy who couldn't make 168 and his weigh ins don't seem like a guy that couldn't make 168. I'm not big on anyone weighing so close to the weigh-in weight a week out, though. There's just too much to be gained by cutting weight at the end and putting it right back on like the vast majority of fighters.
Glen Johnson has fallen off a bit in the last few years...but IMO he is still toooo much for Allan Green...
Johndon loses every time he has a big opportunity. It is what he does. He lost to Woods and Ottke, FFS... He is honestly a much better fighter than Green IMHO, but he is now old and hideously unreliable to back in any event. I think he loses this, I really do. MTF
Green really should beat him. However, he is like a fish out of water when another fighter pushes the pace. We all know that Johnson is master of that. I can totally see Green crumbling again.
Green should knock this old guy flat, and Johnson hasn't seen 40 in around ten years or so. If Green loses, he is out of the big money for good.
I don't believe that for a second. Oscar was half dead and on IV fluids after he weighed in for that fight. No way he was even close to weight 2 weeks out. That is a sign of losing a lot of weight real fast. You can't be dehydrated like that for 2 weeks.
Damn, shows how disinterested I've become to boxing lately. I've only really been skimming info lately and for weeks I've been thinking Glen Johnson is going to fight Danny Green and it might be a decent scrap between two old guys. :: Is this really a Super 6 fight? :dunno:
The fight itself isn't a bad one, the fact that one of these two are going into the Semi's is ridiculous though.
With Dirrell and Kessler out, it's unfortunate, but someone has to fill the last spot. I am curious if they'll give Ward the winner of this bout? If Green wins, the semi's would then consist of a Ward/Green rematch in a bout that no one would care about and an immediate Froch/Abraham rematch that may or may not be intriguing at that point. It makes more sense (on paper) to have Ward fight the loser of the Froch Abraham bout because then you end up 3 good bouts to finish up with and with a potential final of Ward vs the 'best' guy still available and a guy he hasn't fought yet.
ward vs abraham is the fight I want to see. I think Ward outclasses Froch. Too wide, too slow to deal with ward. Abraham has the power to turn Ward's lights out at any moment.
I want to see Ward fight both of them because they bring such different things to the table. As much as Froch seems like the easier opponent for Ward, Froch has already fought Dirrell, Kessler, and Pascal and made life hell for all of them. I would like to see how Ward deals with his volume, determination, and awkwardness because the fighters who fight that way (such as Librado Andrade) do not do it at nearly the level Froch does.
Temporary dehydration appears to affect athletic performance very little in fight sports, particularly since we have day-before weigh-ins. Ongoing, persistent dehydration that occurs when a fighter keeps the weight off appears to be more harmful to athletic performance. Sure, it's easy to find exceptions, but I think the fact that most fighters do cut weight and put it immediately back on is very convincing evidence.
