UFC 122 This saturday on SPIKE

I agree with you about Okami and the MW division. Okami is a worthy challenger.

But I disagree about the Shields fight. It was close but I think Shields constantly pressed the action and spent 90% of the fight with Okami pinned against the cage. Oddly enough, Okami got the better of the brief moments of stand up but he didn't dominate the way you would think against the mediocre striking of Shields.

Nevertheless, this is a different Okami all together. The dude spent time with Sonnen's camp after his loss to Sonnen. His game is much more solid. I guarentee you that he will go right after Silva and get the take down. And unlike Sonnen, Okami would put some hurt on Anderson once he's on top.

 

Okami is strong positionally but doesn't really look for ground and pound.

For that reason, I'm taking Anderson over 25 minutes.

 

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I like Anderson also, but Okami will make a fight of it.

Okami and Marquardt are both top 5. Means nothing if one of them beats the other. He beat Sonnen who dominated Marquart already.

 

I watched Pacquaio vs Margarito first, and then I watched the UFC card. Talk about a drop in entertainment/enjoyment value. It was like having a really good steak and finishing it off with a leathery 7-11 hotdog. The last UFC was not very entertaining in my opinion.

Okami-Marquardt was a snorefest. Okami wanted to commit to his striking only marginally more than Marquardt who didn't want to commit unless he happened to be running past Okami to the side.

Okami's right leg was there to get kicked with an inside leg kick all night. Marquardt, of course, threw the occasional tepid outside leg kick with his lead leg which did nothing, and then he tried to play tag for the rest of the night unless he somehow managed to get inside and try to wrestle.

That fight was not entertaining at all in my opinion.

 

Trust me, the UFC event didn't compare to Manny-Margarito. I loved the environment and atmosphere of shear energy with the Pacman fight.

That being said, I recorded the UFC event free on Spike and watched it later. The main event wasn't very entertaining because Marquardt didn't seem like he wanted to win very badly. It makes no sense. But there were other fights on the card that were entertaining.

A free UFC event should be compared to Boxing After Dark not the biggest boxing PPV of the year. It would be like an MMA fan comparing the atmosphere of Lesnar-Velasquez to watching Allan Green on ShoBox. Apples and oranges.

You have really good insight. If Marquardt had half of Sonnen's heart, he would have either won or gone out on his shield.

The B.A.D. comparison is valid, but the last UFC card reminded me of the time that Larry Merchant said, "Tonight, we brought you junk", after RJJ toyed with that cop Frazier.

 

Absolutely. It was frustrating because you would think Marquardt would be the one person who knows how fleeting a title shot can be. He was the next in line if he could have gotten past Sonnen. He was a huge favorite in that fight and got owned. And here he was, in the same position again, and didn't seem like he was aware of the significance of the fight.

Okami pressed the action and deserved the win. For Marquardt, he may need 3-4 more wins before he even sniffs a title shot again.
