Report and photo by Przemek Garczarczyk While Tomasz Adamek is focused on facing Vinny Maddalone on December 9, things are moving forward on a possible clash between Adamek and ring legend Roy Jones Jr. in early 2011 if no fight with the Klitschkos materializes. “We presented Ziggy Rozalski a simple, straightforward contract and as far as I know, it is acceptable to both Ziggy and Adamek. From our perspective, we are very interested in a fight between Tomasz and Roy for early next year,†said John Wirt, CEO of Square Ring Promotions who represents the former world champion in four different weight classes. Jones Jr. spoke to Fightnews.com: Roy, are you aware that you are a part of the Polish national debate? Did I do something? What happened? You are one of the most revered and popular fighters in Poland and now you want to fight Tomasz Adamek. Your fans are asking themselves if Adamek should fight a legend that has his best years behind him. Why should Adamek fight you? There are many reasons. What about fighting somebody who actually did what Adamek wants to accomplish – become light heavyweight and heavyweight champion of the world? If I were him, I would like to fight somebody like that. To find out what he did to get the heavyweight title in the ring, not by watching tapes. He probably saw me fighting John Ruiz many times but real life it’s a different thing. What about this “best years behind him†– do you agree? People are saying this but ask, for example, Jeff Lacy if this is the truth. He is not saying this anymore, is he? I need special motivation, it inspires me when people are telling me that it’s over and it gives me special motivation – this is why Adamek is a challenge I like. Lacy and Adamek, we are talking different weight classes. 50 pounds different. So what? Adamek has very quick hands for a heavyweight and I have quick hands. He can punch and I can punch. Don’t you want to see who is better? I know his career; we would have probably already fought if he would have stayed in light heavyweight division. He’s is a brave guy, does what he wants, looks for challenges, just like me. In 2003, when you fought John Ruiz for WBC title, you weighed only 193 pounds… The cruiserweight division limit was 190 lbs. back then, so I had to be over the limit to fight at heavyweight. Now it’s 200, but my weight will not be a problem. People who are saying that I’m not hitting as hard as before should ask that to Adamek after the fight. I have no problem with fighting Adamek. I understand that for him I may be a stepping stone, easy fight before the Klitschkos or Haye. It’s OK, I have no problem with that, but he will see that I’m still a teacher and in comparison to what I did in the ring, he is still a pupil.
:bears: Keep in mind that Adamek won THE title at cruiserweight on top of light heavyweight. Something Roid has never done (even with the help of his documented steroid abuse)
...& not for the first time, either. There are some who feel even Jones' long-term health has been at risk in recent years, & I can honestly understand that sentiment. He's been knocked out something fierce a good few times now. Adamek isn't likely to alleviate any of the nay-sayers' concerns. It's a stupifying mismatch, the likes of which only one man in the world could be delusional enough at this point to believe Jones could win it...unfortunately, that is Jones himself. They say pride comes before the fall, but how many more times can Jones get back up still believing he's got it?
i like adamek but this is getting ridiculous. main events is milking his popularity with the feeble minded east coast poles.
RJJ must be absolutely skint to still be fighting, and I use that term loosely, at this stage when he is so far beyond shot that you have to start questioning the sanity of both Jones and those agreeing to fight him. MTF :shit:
I never booked Roy as a big spender, and most of what he bought, like farms and land and livestock. and what-not, has retained it's wealth. The great thing about land, as the man says, is that you always have somewhere to put it. Then there is his Royalties, from his music career. Y'all musta 4got :nono: Nah...I figure Roy just thinks he has one more big performance left in him. He might juice up, pump some HGH, and go for it one last time.
Thats the point... he just might. This is sad. Roy is MORE delusional then Holy. Who woulda ever thought... IRON MIKE has more sense then Roy, and Holy. Mike realized he was shot to shit and got out. Jones, and Holy just cant see it.
Well, hold on, he got out after he took successive beatings from Lewis, Williams, and, er, The Clones Colon, Kevin McBride. The problem for Roy is that he keeps getting to beat the shit out of somebody like Sheika or Tito or Lacy, all of whom were much bigger names than Williams or McBride ever were, and thus Roy thinks he has some iota of a chance left. With Tyson, he was just getting busted by the sorts of guys Roy is still able to beat. Even the Calzaghe fight, Roy is looking back and saying "Oh, I had the guy down, I felt I was winning", same with Hopkins where he blames refereeing, The danger for Roy is that Roy is always able to find a half-valid excuse and couple it with a half-decent win, and kid himself into thinking he still has it when, no, he doesn't still have it.
True, but I think mentally theres a differance. I think Mike knew deep inside that he was washed up, even before losing to those last two bums. Even in the Lewis fight he knew he was old, and was most likely gonna get his ass whupped. He just needed $$$$, and figured he would give it a shot for a few rounds. Roy on the other hand still believes its the 90's. Tyson talked alot of shit, but I dont think he was delusional enough to believe he was his 80's self in 2002.
True enough....Mike had mental health issues, Roy is self-deluded, and I guess there is a difference.
And that is because Roy is always able to rationalize things in his mind. Roy is always able to window-dress things so that he comes out evens, no matter what. "I was beating Calzaghe, then I got cut....I beat up Lacy worse than Joe...I stopped Sheika better than Joe.....Greens gloves were loaded and besides he just beat BJ Flores, .......Hopkins is a cheat....." etc Mike had street perspective.....a sort of a safety system which allows him to quit when he needs to.
Damn, why wasn't Roy seeking out fights like this when he was still in his prime? He's gone from one extreme to another. He was once safety first and now it seems he has a death wish. I wish he would retire. Hopefully he didn't blow all his money on his musical dreams.
Yep, even in those fights, Mike pretty much knew he was shot, then retired. At no point do I think Tyson was remotely deluded like Roy is.
True, what's up with that? Adamek has proved to be a somewhat legit heavy. Why the fuck is he fighting Roy? It's absurd.
Agreed. Mike knew it. He looked seriously depressed, when he lost to guys like Williams and McBride. He knew they were 30 seconds in his prime.
The Duvas know they have a nice little earner, this guy is is a modestly successful draw, he's happy to stay very active...but his draw could be harmed if he takes the klitschko fight and is badly beaten, even if it might be the biggest cheque...I blame the Grant fight, Duva knows he won't have a hope now against Klitschko and might even lose that shot if he faces another marginal big guy, I'd say 2 more soft touches and then Klit in Autumn 2011
How can Jones go from being so concern about his health(did not wanting to end up like McClellan) to what he has become today...?
Plus it is hard to be too critical of the guy, he started off at 175. Everyone knows he is too small so what the hell.....and Grant can't have been any worse than Harrison.
Maybe looked at his career and realised that while most think he's one of the most skilled of all time, his resume was not up to par with all time greats. It is possible he actually cares about his legacy at this point. A shame it really came too late. If prime Roy was willng to take on the challenges he is now and won most of them, he'd be considered all time.
