It's all about taking risks! A win over Martinez will be huge for Cotto. :bears: I think the fight can be made @ a catch weight of 156. Obviously Cotto should not weigh more than 154.

    Thoughts?

Cotto's Still "Rebuilding" Himself, So to Speak...He Needs to Worry about the Angulo's, Cintron's & Chavez Jr.'s of the World 1st...THEN, if Both he & Martinez R STILL Standing, he Should Pursue that Fight...

But NOT For Another Year or So....

If both are still standing by mid 2011 then YES...it should happen.

But this 5-6 month of silence from Team Cotto is suspect...Cotto has been one of the most active fighters in recent years. 2-3 months after his last fight we already knew who his next opponent would be...

Cotto is done. He's irrelevant. Fans don't like fighters that can't take a beating.

With the right opponent Cotto is still a PPV fighter...Cotto vs. Chavez jr could very well make close to a million...

Cotto vs. Martinez...not much maybe in the 400-500k because Martinez is not well known...

Cotto-Chavez jr makes sense from every angle right now. Get that out the way, drop back to welter, fight Berto. I'd pay to see Cotto-Berto that'd be a stick on FOTY contender.

Losing to the p4p Number 1 guy makes you irrelevant? Seems a little harsh that.... there are still fights Im excited to see a guy as good as Cotto in.

But the fight doesn't make $en$e to Arum...he won't put Chavez Jr. in vs. Cotto unless he is 99% sure Jr can beat him....why waste a young piggy bank, for a fighter who is coming to the end of his career...?

But wasn't he in the TOP 10...?!?!

And going into the fight, boxing expert/analyst were split on who would win..it wasn't like Margarito was some bum who had no chance of winning. Other than Mayweather growing a pair and fight either guy(ohh yeah he retired :Alabama:)..it was the biggest fight that could be made at 147 at the TIME...

I understand why you and many think that but what if Cotto beats him? It's a huge risk but the reward is great! This is boxing, anything can happen. If I were Cotto I would challenge Martinez for all the marbles. :shadow:

Seeing how Cotto didn't look that good vs. Foreman...other than the jab and what seems like a lack of punching power at 154(foreman was one-legged for 1-2 rounds)..i don't like his chances vs. the faster, stronger, bigger Martinez...but yeah..FUCK IT if you gotta go...go out fighting for the Middleweight championship...

Everybody needs to stop thinking like a promoter/manager/network. Of course Cotto should fight Martinez - it's a fight I'd love to fucking see, and not one that Cotto would have no chance to win.

All those people saying Cotto needs to rebuild, blah, blah, blah. It's an implicit endorsement of all the shit we as fans hate. Fuck you! If Cotto's not to fight the best guys he can, then what the fuck is he here for?

Gee. I wonder what Arum will call the PPV, Margarito vs Cotto II. What does everyone think? "Pay-back?" "The truth?" "Revenge of the Boricua?"

Cotto isn't going to "rebuild" himself any different, in fact he hasn't changed at all in the past 5 years, except getting a bit slower and a bit older. If the fight can be made then it should be done. Waiting can only diminish its relevance.

Good post. I agree with the general notion that Cotto probably loses a Martinez fight, but I also agree with the minority sentiment that he should take the fight anyway. Cotto is not irrelevant at the moment, but he is not far from it. He is not going to get noticeably better, not will he significantly "rebuild" in six months or six years. He is what he is, and the younger he is, the more chance he has in just about any fight.

If there was any one fight he could take that could really re-ignite his career, the Martinez fight may well be it. It is high risk, but if Cotto is truly seeking to return to the list of the "best" fighters in the world, then he needs to win this sort of fight. I think Cotto's chances of winning are probably 1 in 3, but it is possible. He might as well go out with a fight like this, as opposed to bumbling around fighting "rebuilding" fights. Either he's still got it, or he doesn't.
