I don't know what this is worth, but Manny Steward, in the Calzaghe fight, basically stated, quite early, that Joe was a big guy who was going to do to Roy all night what he had been doing since the second round. Compare/Contrast that with what Manny Steward had to say in the Johnson fight, where he felt Roy might still come back into it. Anyways, the two beatings were different. Johnson didnt dare do what Calzaghe did, and Calzaghe didnt need to do what Johnson did.
Agreed with Wlad, Vitali and Lewis. I think Roy would have beat Byrd. IMO, he was a better version of Byrd. A blown up MW relying on quickness at HW. A fight with Sanders could have been interesting. Obviously Sanders would have had the size and power advantage, but I think Roy could have really flustered Sanders. He definitely wouldn't have been caught standing still as Wlad did.
Vitali wasnt caught still by Sanders either- he was caught coming in. Sanders is one of the few fighters to have forced Vitali to the ropes. If he could back Vitali up he could back Jones up. Byrd also had a better chin than Jones, but had slower feet and hands.
I came away from the early rounds of the Calzaghe fight pretty convinced a prime Jones would have done a number on him. And comfortably. At no point in the Johnson fight did it look like that. And that was with a 4 year younger version of Jones. Of course you're right Calzaghe probably did end up being more dominant, but in terms of it's meaningfulness.....not necessarily the most decisively. prime for prime Johnson is a far harder opponent for Roy than Calzaghe, IMO.
Sanders KO's Roy early there is no doubt about it. Seriously if you think Roy beats Sanders then you must be crazy!
when was Roy in the Johnson fight? I had him losing every round. Plus, the Calzaghe fight was what...five years later? That's like comparing the Ali who fought Frazier in 1970 to the one who fought Norton in 1976. Not anywhere near the same guy.
Out of the 4 fighters that kicked Roy's ass 3 of them were older than him at the time of the ass kicking only Calzaghe was younger. These are the ages of both fighters at the time of ass kicking taking place. Bernard Hopkins 45 Roy Jones Jr. 41 Joe Calzaghe 36 Roy Jones Jr. 39 Glen Johnson 35 Roy Jones Jr. 35 Antonio Tarver 36 Roy Jones Jr 35
False. Roy was fucked from the minute he dropped down to fight Tarver in their first fight. He used up what he had left in that fight. After that, he pretty much settled at a general level of shotness- in fact, I would go one better and say that he was more shot when he fought Johnson than when he fought Calzaghe. At least before Calzaghe, Jones had managed a few wins and a bit of confidence.
Sanders backed vitali up because he has horrible lateral movement. He's a plodder, straight forward, straight back. Definitely not Roys' style. Not saying he'd beat Sander's but it would be interesting to say the least. I think Roy would have played with Byrd.
I think I'd go with Johnson, as Roy was down for minutes after that knockout. He got off the canvas and at least made it to his feet in the Tarver knockout. There was celebrating (from non-Jones fans) after the Tarver KO, there was genuine concern after the Johnson one. But, if you want to attribute the Johnson KO in part to the Tarver one, I could see voting for that one becuase of it. Whatever the case, Tarver's KO by far the biggest and most significant win of the bunch, IMO. In fact, that's prompted me to think of what could be a pretty nice topic on this forum...biggest/best win of the decade ('01-10)....Tarver-Jones II would definitely be on the list.
I agree with this as well and always said Jones was never same after the yo-yo in weight HW to LHW. Even Mackie said Roy should of stayed at HW and he destroyed his body doing it.
if age ever was a good indicator in boxing terms, your post would mean something... but it isnt, so your post is useless and pointless
Danny Green!? ......Danny Green!!.......... Danny Green!!! ,.. das dey one!, das dey one!, das dey one!!!! The whole Danny Green fight was a chuckler,.. from the way Roy seemed to just dissapear down a goats track and pop up in the southern hemisphere to peoples confusion, to the fight itself, to the Australian commentary during the fight, to the reaction afterwards from Hopkins, and then from Roy back in the US,...and from fans on the messageboard,... 'Notice how some ol' white australian guy saiiiys ...'Das dey one!' ,.. twas some very funny shit all round.
