I think it'll be a close fight. If Dzin can fight up to the same level he had against Santos years ago he has a good chance.
I think it is the worst matchup for Martinez of the 154-160 guys. And that makes it a great matchup, imo.
Boxrec only has this guy ranked 19th. I want to see Martinez fight Angulo or Margarito next, or maybe Cotto.
If it gets closer than "close" then :bears: to all involved. I really want to see this fight, sooner than later.
Boxrec is the the comical ranking website around. Dzin is better than Margarito, and ALOT better than Angulo. Martinez-Angulo would be a mismatch. Dzinziruk has a real chance of winning.
Doesn't it go by strength of opposition? That would tell me that Dzin hasn't fought anyone. Which makes sense since I havent seen him on any TV fights. Plus Margarito already beat Martinez, stopped him in fact. So it is an interesting rematch considering Martinez is now ranked higher.
martinez margarito is an interesting fight? maybe if youre interested in seeing a washed up margarito who is undeserving of a title shot get thoroughly whipped again
Dzin is unbeaten and has solid wins over a still prime Daniel Santos, and over Joel Julio years before Angulo beat him. Who has Angulo fought? He lost to the best fighter he ever faced in Kermit the frog. He's too slow for Martinez.... and besides we've been down that road before. That fight would have happened, but El Perro priced himself out. And Margarito has regressed over the years, while Maravilla has improved. After the ass whuppin he took vs Pac, I have little interest in seeing that rematch. Besides he's already lined up for the Cotto rematch in June. Dzinzuruk is the best available opponent for Martinez is too face. He's a tall southpaw, has a good defense, a good chin, a superb right jab, and throws tight and very acccurate punches.
Well these fights can happen after Martinez beats Dzin. Even if Margarito has regressed, styles make fights and he'll give him a ton of trouble. Even Pavlik gave Martinez a lot of trouble before the cut. I thought he had a good shot at winning before it, and he has the same plodding, pressure style, but worse because he doesn't go to the body as much. Angulo was impressive in his last two fights, and Dzinzuruk may have beaten Julio, but Angulo stopped him.
Yeah after James Kirkland had stopped him. And that proves nothing expect the obvious... Angulo is a better puncher than Dzin. But Dzin is better than Angulo at every other facet besides power.
I like boxrec's rating system. I generally think it is very good. It is the best objective rating system i'm aware of.
honestly angulo would beat the frogshit out of cintron if they fought again. the dude drove cross country from cali to florida the week of the fight, and we all know why. I personally think martinez-angulo would be a more entertaining bout, and more impressive performance for martinez. dzinzurik will make for a much tougher test, but style wise could be a boring fight. hbo probably isnt dying to put money into an angulo fight in mexico or elsewhere, especially after he deceived them (and everyone)
Martinez-Angulo WOULD be more entertaining.... but Angulo only has himself to blame. I'm not ready to say that Dzin-Martinez will be boring either. Dzin-Santos was a very good fight, and lord knows Santos can be boring in many cases. I'm picking Martinez though, cause I think Dzin has probably declined. If he can bring it like he did vs Santos though.... then I think this is basically a pick em.
This. Dzinziruk struggles with smaller fighters that stay close, put on pressure and throw a lot from all angles. Martinez throws from all angles, but he will probably give Dzinziruk enough space to operate. Really tough to say how this will play out, but that is much better than Martinez fighting Zbik or Lee, because those would have been mismatches from the beginning. Happy HBO took a stance against them, just wish they would be that tough on all their house fighters. There are some fighters that had it much easier than Martinez.
Boxrec is actually the most useful ranking IMo because it ranks solely on what guys have done and proven rather than how they look doing it. I'm not interested in another anonymous person's subjective opinion, I'll bring my own.
Dzinzurik is an easy style match up for Martinez, IMO. I'd be surprised if Martinez drops more than 3 rounds here, though he'll look unspectacular doing so and it'll be a pretty tepid, low output affair.
Really? A few weeks ago Koji Sato was ranked 10 places ahead of Sakio Bika at super middleweight. He´s 18-1 with 16 KO´s. If that guy lasts more than three rounds with Bika I eat shit. The only time he ever stepped up the competition he was slaughtered by Felix Sturm in seven rounds. Robert Stieglitz is ranked ahead of Andrade, Abraham and Johnson. He wouldn´t last the distance with any of them. How is Dirrell ranked ahead of Froch, when Froch beat him and Abraham, and Taylor, and Pascal? How is Bute ranked ahead of Ward, Kessler and Froch, when his best win has come against Andrade? Yeah those Boxrec rankings are excellent.
I'd have rather seen Martinez face Pirog myself, or really any other true middleweight. Dzinziruk is a good fighter, but hasn't fought at MW in more than a decade and honestly, how much mileage is he supposed to get over a five-year old win over Daniel Santos? His JMW has been lengthy, but not tough to do when you only fight once a year and against limited opposition. I just didn't get why this was the fight HBO pushed so hard for, unless they owe Dzinziruk (or Gary Shaw) a date. Considering the path Martinez has led the past couple of years, I'd like to think that most fans would've forgiven one gimme while at least building up a fight with Pirog or Sturm.
My understanding was it was based on computer calculations of prior victories weighted by where the other guys ranked. Hence there's no human bias or agenda behind it. That doesn't mean the details of where closely comparable guys rank against each other won't be fucked up, but IMO that makes it a pretty useful tool in evaluating roughly where in the scheme of things guys you haven't heard of yet belong at the stage they're at. Which is pretty much the only purpose of rankings for boxing fans is it not? We don't need someone else to tell us where to rank Froch, Bute & Dirrel, but knowing whether boxrec tabulates some unknown guy at 43 or 12 is useful information. Knowing that the WBC has him at number 9 essentially tells us nothing useful about his ability & I don't trust any honest opinion based source to have enough info/knowledge to being able to give me useful top 70 rankings for the superfeatherweight division, etc. That's my take on boxrec rankings. I don't care what the order of their top 10 is.
last time i saw dzinzurik on showtime, he looked pretty sharp. he seems to have a lot of power behind his fierce jabs, but we'll see if he'll be able to land against a slick guy like martinez. either way, i don't really care for this fight. btw, how come there's no mention of martinez vs. williams 3? granted, it was a brutal 2nd round KO, but i wouldnt rule out a williams win if they fought once more.
I have heard nothing out of Williams since that fight. I seriously doubt he's even looking to get back in the ring with Martinez. He's gone silent.
Sato is ranked 23, Bika is ranked 26. For you that means they are about equal. Me from having seen both fight, I can tell you I´d give a random sports student with 10 hours of boxing training a good chance to last longer with Sato, than Sato would last with Bika. That´s how close they really are. If their rankings are shit in correctly reflecting the top 10 fighters in the division, where plenty of information is known, how is it supposed to rank the 28th, 56th or 70th fighter accurately? You can look at a record and tell what a guy has or hasn´t done. That´s much better than looking at boxrec rankings.
Excellent fight, imo. Maybe not the most pleasant, but Dzinziruk is a very good fighter who has been underrated for a long time. Most of you guys know how much i like Daniel Santos and rate him highly I think Dzin's win over him was very impressive (also it was an entertaining fight). I am suprised this fight is happenig to be honest
Four months is way too soon, not to mention that they didn't draw particularly well for the rematch. I doubt Williams' handlers will pursue a third fight, at least not until they have more leverage than at present moment (which is none).
who is williams with these days? i saw him at a local card in virginia in november and he was only around because he moved his training camp to somewhere in maryland. not sure of any known world class commodity these days in my neck of woods.
George Peterson has trained him forever. Goossen is his promoter and the most important piece to the puzzle, of course, is his advisor Al Haymon.
Right. I say we fall out over this and make barbed jibes about each others intelligence and bias' (with implications to their unspoken sexual motivations) down the e-years in perpetuity. Deal?
