Outside of Cain Velasquez himself, no one was more impacted by the news of his shoulder injury than the No. 1 for his UFC heavyweight championship.

Deep in training for an anticipated matchup with Velasquez, possibly at UFC 129 in Toronto, Junior dos Santos will instead have to wait until late summer for a crack at the champion. While he would welcome the chance to face Velasquez at UFC “Rio†in Brazil in August, dos Santos made clear his desire to fight for an interim title while the American Kickboxing Academy standout heals from his injury.

“Of course, it would be amazing to face Velasquez at UFC ‘Rio’ in August, but I cannot stay away from the Octagon for a year just waiting for him to recover,†dos Santos told Sherdog.com. “I really think that the fairest thing to do would be for [UFC President] Dana [White] to give me the opportunity to fight for an interim belt. I’m 100 percent focused on getting this belt.â€

Velasquez captured the title in a rousing first-round technical knockout against former World Wrestling Entertainment superstar Brock Lesnar at UFC 121 in October. Dos Santos was understandably disappointed when word of the undefeated champion’s injury reached his ear.

“This is the worst news I could have,†dos Santos said.

Dos Santos, on a seven-fight winning streak, has not competed since he earned a unanimous decision over “The Ultimate Fighter†Season 10 winner Roy Nelson at UFC 117 in August. Nearly five months later, he finds himself without an opponent and uncertain as to what the immediate future holds for him.

“I’m in the best moment of my career, training hard and working so hard to reach the fight of my life, and, suddenly, it’s postponed eight months. It’s definitely not fair,†he said. “I’m already five months away from fighting. I can’t wait eight months.â€

The 26-year-old Brazilian hopes another opportunity will present itself in the meantime.

“Fighting is my life, not only because I love to do that but because I need to fight for a living,†dos Santos said. “I still don’t make money like the other top guys, so I really need to work.â€

In the interim, dos Santos plans to travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to help train UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva for his scheduled title defense against Vitor Belfort at UFC 126 in February. He has trained with both men in the past and provided some insight into the Silva-Belfort showdown.

“I’ve already trained with both and can predict that it will be an amazing fight,†dos Santos said. “Vitor is more explosive and open, while Anderson is more intelligent and brings the opponent into his game. I would say that it’s 60 percent for Anderson and 40 percent for Belfort.

They should have JDS fight somebody on the Toronto card that would be great. I could the best UFC heavyweight in person! How long is Carwin out for ?

One of these fights would make sense for interim title. JDS beats both.

    JDS vs Lesnar
    JDS vs Carwin

For the interim the only person out there would be lesner.

Good fight for JDS but bad for the UFC. If JDS destroys him then Lesnar is basically finished. If Lesnar wins, the UFC loses again because Lesnar-Velasquez II would not hold the same weight as JDS-Velasquez.

Theres nothing to laugh about here honestly. Frank mir always shows up to fight and surprises a lot of people

Carwin would be a good fight

Lesner needs to fight much lower level guys and actually work his way up this time as a fighter, he honestly needs to work on his skill and not focus on fighting for a title, or even top contenders

I'm sure everyone will disagree, but I can see Lesnar beating JDS. Obviously, JDS has the advantage standing a BIG advantage. When has JDS ever faced a guy with wrestling like Lesnar? It would certainly be a good warm up for another great wrestler like velasquez. Let's see how JDS handles a big talented wrestler. We have not seen it yet, and for all we know he could get taken down and controlled. It certainly would not shock me if that happened.

I dont diagree. He just better not get hit with a shot. But if he can take down JDS, he should have an advantage. JDS has terrible stamina.

What i meant was he always comes to compete and frequently pulls out victories in fights a lot of people count him out in

Did you really think he was gonna roll big nog like he did? Hes always had an up and down career, but you never know what hes going to bring to the table

I actually picked Mir to beat Nog. I've always been a fan of Mir because he seems to be a huge student of the sport and is willing to learn.

That being said, he also frustrates the hell out me sometimes with his inconsistency. And that crap with Mirko was just ridiculous.

If he gets the call to fight JDS, I will be rooting for him. And if he has a good night, he can beat Junior.

JDS vs Carwin. I hope they get it done. Carwin hasn't fought since the Lesnar fight, JDS is getting cold on the shelf as well, and Cain is out for a year, far too long to have the contender shelved.

That's a good idea. If JDS wins, the JDS-Velasquez fight becomes even bigger. If Carwin wins, which I would pick, I think Carwin-Velasquez also becomes a very interesting fight.

Carwin is still an absolute animal to try and beat. The first round with him will be a crap shoot for any heavyweight including Velasquez.

Personally I think Carwin is a bad match up for JDS. Carwin is too big a puncher, and I think he hurts JDS long before JDS hurts him.

Carwin had a bad back injury, he is out until at least May.

I like JDS VS Lesnar personally.

JDS vs Lesnar would be sweet. JDS would kill that big baby. UFC won't put Lesnar in with JDS because he's their draw and a fight against JDS would equal 3rd ass kicking in a row for Lesnar and that would greatly hurt his drawing power.

Lesnar is going to curl up and protect his face in the fetal position as soon as the bell rings. Easy win for JDS.

I hope this isnt true. Lesner should use his non-title time for improvement. If he beats JDS, which is a possibility, i dont see him beating cain. But i would love to see a cain vs. JDS fight. Which i think Cain would win too.

I like Lesnar in this fight. JDS isn't near as explosive as Cain nor is he as big a puncher as Carwin. I think Brock will be able to take him down and inflict big damage.

Risky move for the UFC. If Brock wins, does anyone really want to see Lesnar-Velasquez II?
