you know.. I'm watching this fight and 2 things really stick out to me 1. Foreman had ridiculous power.. natural power.. every time he lands he hurt Pries 2. Foreman was ridiculosly slow.. it really looks like he is in slow motion! it makes it kind of MORE impressive that he has power being that slow
I always thought it looked like Foreman was swinging mallets around in there. I'd guess it's just an optical illusion but it looked like his hands weighed about 7lb each. Same with Shavers' actually,
Yeah, that's an interesting observation. What always puzzled me about Foreman was that he never appeared to go through the physical motion that you would expect a puncher to go through. He rarely "wound up" to punch, and he had so little torso or leg movement in many his punches, especially in his comeback. It seemed as if he was arm punching almost all the time, but yet he apparently landed with more power than other technically correct punchers. Watch sometime how Mike Tyson would twist his torso to generate power when he "uncoiled", along with pushing with his legs, quickly moving his arms/hands into position in order to focus all this physical motion into one area of impact. Kind of like a really good golf swing. Then scratch your head as you watch Foreman separate Michael Moorer from his senses with what looks like a 2-foot arm punch, with Foreman barely moving his legs, torso, anything. Foreman is something of an anomaly.
Foreman knew how to throw shots relaxed. Also, since he doesn't lift his shoulders while punching it makes his shots more difficult to see even though they travel slow
Yeah, it's far from text book like outlander says, but he got a fair amount of body behind them. Even if you look at the Moorer KO from the long camera angle you see it come up from his legs through his hips and the follow through. He tended to holster them from low and as you say in a really relaxed way that made them look weird as hell. Though of course, he was so freakishly strong and powerful that at other times he could throw arm punches and still be effective
Foreman was a beast. I remember he hit some dude in the backside and the dude fell in agony. Crazy power. Remember 'When We Were Kings' where they showed Foreman just pulverizing the heavy bag? Amazing how Ali could stand up to that.
That was freaky. You ever try hitting one of those huge bags? You're as likely to break you hand as dent it.:notallthere:
no doubt.. but it's one of those things where I caught this fight on ESPN Classic and even thought we all know it.. it's suprising to see.. he looked SOOOO SLOW
He had horrible technique back then, but he was the most naturally powerful fighter that ever lived... just ridiculous... if he had more of the fine tuning he had in his comeback when he was in his prime, he would have been even more devastating
